    Chapter 1

It was a nice, sunny day in Colorado Springs. Shelby and Daniel Anderson were stuck inside Mesa Ridge High School, waiting for Mr. O’Connor to start history class. Shelby was talking to her friend, Amanda.

Shelby said, My mom got a phone call the other day. My dad has been found alive and will be home in a few days!

Amanda said excitedly, Oh, that’s wonderful, Shelby! I am so happy for you! Your dad has been gone a long time.

Yes, he has been in Vietnam for six years, replied Shelby.

Mr. O’Connor came in the room and said, Good morning, class. I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break. Now let’s get our history books out and get busy. Turn to page 465.

Everyone got their books out and turned to the correct page.

Mr. O’Connor said, All right, we are going to study about Pearl Harbor. Can anyone tell us about Pearl Harbor?

Several students raised their hands to answer his question about Pearl Harbor.

Mr. O’Connor called on Shelby. Okay, Shelby, tell us what you know about Pearl Harbor.

Before Shelby could start, the classroom door opened. Mrs. Cummings, the principal, came into the room and went over to Mr. O’Connor. She said something quietly to Mr. O’Connor then left the room.

Shelby and Daniel, after class is over, you need to go to the principal’s office and talk with Mrs. Cummings, said Mr. O’Connor.

One of the boys in the class said, "Oooooh, you two are in trouble now!"

Mr. O’Connor said, All right, that’s enough. They are not in trouble. Mrs. Cummings just wants to talk with them. Okay, Shelby, I believe you were going to tell us about Pearl Harbor.

Shelby said clearly, On Sunday December 7, 1941, Japanese bombers made a surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor on Oahu Island, Hawaii. This was what drove the United States into World War II.

That was very good, Shelby, said Mr. O’Connor. Now can you tell us who the president was at that time and what did he call December 7, 1941?

The president was Franklin D. Roosevelt. He called December 7, 1941, ‘a date which will live in infamy,’ Shelby answered.

Mr. O’Connor said, Very good, Shelby.

When the bell rang, Mr. O’Connor said, Class, for homework tonight, read pages 465–470 and answer the questions at the bottom of pages 467 and 470. Shelby and Daniel, don’t forget to go talk to Mrs. Cummings.

Yes, sir. See you tomorrow, replied Shelby and Daniel.

Shelby and Daniel went to the school office and said to the secretary, Mrs. Cummings wanted to talk to us after class.

Mrs. Cummings came out of her office and said, Shelby and Daniel, I thought I heard you out here. Come into my office and have a seat.

Shelby and Daniel went into Mrs. Cummings’ office and sat down in the chairs that were
