De Vissers van Zeeuws-Vlaanderen
––––––––
We komen hier samen doorheen, Jan,
The Fishermen of Zeeland-Flanders
––––––––
In the small village on the coast of Zeeland-Flanders, there were two men who went out to sea every morning at sunrise to fish. Karel and Jan had been friends since they were boys. They not only shared a passion for fishing but also for life itself.
Every morning, before the first light touched the horizon, Karel and Jan pulled their old fishing boat out of the sand and rowed out to sea together. The waves were their companions, the wind their guide.
On a windy morning, when the sky was gray and the sea wild, Karel and Jan decided to go further out to sea than usual. They were determined to catch a big catch, despite the warnings from the other fishermen in the village.
As they rowed further and further from the shore, the waves began to get higher and the wind stronger. But Karel and Jan were determined. They believed in their skills as fishermen and trusted each other.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a huge wave crashed against their boat. The water poured in, and the boat began to sink. Karel and Jan desperately worked to bail out the water, but it was no use. Their boat sank deeper and deeper.
With their last strength, Karel and Jan clung to a piece of driftwood floating in the raging sea. They looked at each other, their faces pale with fear but determined.
We'll get through this together, Jan,
Karel said with a trembling voice.
Jan nodded, his eyes focused on the horizon.
Hours passed as they bobbed on the waves, their hope fading like foam on the wind. The sun climbed in the sky and sank again, but Karel and Jan kept going.
Then, just as night fell
