    A Fresh Wave Of Gratitude

Long ago, there was an enchanted mermaid kingdom called Oceania. Oceania was filled with so many lovely mermaids. They had the brightest colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue…all the colors of the rainbow. They didn’t have just one color each; every mermaid had a combination of different colors. One mermaid could have a tail with three colors – or more! Even the patterns of their tails were different. No two mermaids looked the same.

There was a young mermaid called Lumina. Lumina was a pretty mermaid with a shiny mane and scales that reflected the gorgeous blue of the ocean. Her scales had so many colors – and the colors sometimes changed!

Lumina had another trait aside from her gorgeous tail: she had a curious mind. She wanted to know everything. She asked lots of questions about anything that caught her interest.

Lumina was fascinated by humans. They were so strange to her, so beautiful. Her curiosity about humans grew to fascination. Then one day, she also wished she was human. Humans were far more interesting than mermaids, or so she thought.

Every sunrise, she swam to the surface and sat on a rock. Then she spent a long time watching the humans. Their skins were fascinating to her; they didn’t have scales. Their hair was also unlike hers. It looked so soft that she dreamed of touching it. And they didn’t have tails. They had legs. They could walk around and do whatever they wanted. It was all so thrilling!

Lumina wondered what it would be like to have legs instead of a tail. She would walk all over the dry land. She would see so many places and do so many things.

She thought of the humans as wonderful creatures and often returned to Oceania sad because she was a mermaid instead of a human. She wished she looked like them. She wished she could live on land, walk with feet and have smooth skin. Lumina didn’t care that Oceania was beautiful and colorful; she just wanted to be human.

One day, when Lumina went above the water to watch the humans, there was a human girl on her rock. She was a beautiful girl and had golden blonde hair. She also had the kindest eyes.

At first, Lumina wanted to run away. But she thought to herself, Who knows? Maybe I could learn more about humans from her.

When the human girl saw her, her eyes were wide in amazement. Are you a mermaid? she asked, staring at Lumina.

Lumina nodded and climbed on the rock, sitting beside the human girl.

    My name's Lumina, she said.

    What's yours?

I'm Bella, and you're beautiful! the girl said.

You have wonderful scales. The brightest eyes. And your mane is perfect.

Lumina felt shy all of a sudden. She’d never met a human before, and she was surprised that Bella thought she was beautiful.

I wish I was a mermaid, just like you. I'd show everyone my beautiful tail and scales. And I'd be able to swim whenever and however I want.

Lumina couldn’t believe it. While she wanted to be a human, this human wanted to be a mermaid!

I’ve always wished I could be human. I wish I could walk on two feet and have smooth skin and silky hair like you. Oh, I’d be the happiest!

Bella’s eyes shone with excitement. I have an idea. You can show me your world, and then I’ll show you mine. That would be so exciting!

    Lumina was so happy!

That’s a wonderful idea! she said, clapping her hands.

Let’s start with your world, Bella told her.

And so it was that on that day, Lumina and her new human friend, Bella, dove into the water and headed for Oceania.

    But there was a problem.

    Bella
