The Littlest Hero

Superheroes come in all shapes and sizes, but no one would have expected Sammy the Squirrel to have any kind of real powers. Sammy looked like a typical squirrel. He had a small pink nose that twitched, a big bushy tail that helped him balance when jumping, and tiny little hands and feet that held tight when scaling the tallest trees. Sammy also had a secret that he did not tell his family: he could fly.

Sammy had no idea why he could fly and others could not, but he loved to practice. Sammy would go deep into the woods and fly from the treetops to the ground and then back up into the clouds. He was able to zip between branches, fly through rainbows, and skim the top of the grass in a matter of seconds. Sammy knew this was a special ability but wanted to keep it hidden. Still, he wanted to be able to use his power for something good.

One afternoon, Sammy was lounging in the tallest tree in the forest. He was half asleep as he allowed the sun to warm his little squirrel body. When a slight breeze blew, Sammy was smacked in the face by a leaf. It surprised him but also gave him an idea. Sammy grabbed the leaf and carefully tore eye holes to create a mask to wear. He used a small piece of vine to tie the mask on his face. Sammy then grabbed another larger leaf to tie on as a cape. No one would recognize him in this costume, and he could show off his powers.

I will be known as Super Squirrel, Sammy spoke into the woods.

Sammy spent the rest of the day practicing his flying while wearing the new mask and cape. He loved how they fluttered in the wind as he zipped in and out of the sunlight. When he felt comfortable with the new look, Sammy scurried back to his home and his friends. He carefully hid the mask and cape in a safe place where no one would find it. Sammy could not wait for the day when he could show off his powers. Luckily, he would not have to wait long.

The next afternoon, while Sammy was out gathering acorns for the winter, he heard a scream. Someone was in trouble, and Sammy knew what he had to do. He quickly put on his mask and cape and flew to where he heard the sound. Sammy heard the low growl of a wolf before he saw the beast that had a tiny chipmunk cornered in a garden. The chipmunk squeaked for help, but the wolf was chomping at the small, quivering animal.

Sammy took a deep breath and started flying in circles around the hungry wolf. The wolf was confused, thinking Sammy was a bird, but it gave the chipmunk enough time to hide. As the wolf chased Sammy into the woods, Sammy flew as high as he could. The wolf quickly got tired of trying to chase Sammy and wandered off in a different direction, but Sammy knew his job was not done. He flew back to the tiny chipmunk that was cowering in the corner of the garden, pressed up against a fence. Sammy landed and spoke gently to the scared creature.

I am here to help. The wolf is gone, Super Squirrel explained.

Who are you? asked the shaking little fluffball.

I am Super Squirrel! I fly around helping those in need. Sammy smiled at the little creature.

Wow! Can you take me back to my home? The little chipmunk looked at Sammy in wonder.

Of course. I will make sure you are safe, Sammy
