Adele A. Roberts has a B.A. in education, M.A. in counseling and a CDA in early childhood development. She created the character of Sammy over forty years ago, and began telling her make-believe stories to her students. She started writing the first story of Sammy when a young student asked if there was a book about the little skunk. Although it wasn’t a priority of hers at the time to write stories, she finished part of the first story and set it aside. Years later she found the old cardboard box containing the aged, colored papers of her first story. It was at this time she realized she needed to complete the task she had begun so many years before.

SAMMY MEETS SHADOW AND CADY
CHAPTER ONE
The skunk family lived in a little cottage outside of the deep woods where there was always work to be done. Sammy helped his father every day with chores. One early morning Sammy’s father was heading toward the barn when he heard an animal crying. He called for Sammy.
Sammy, this could be one of your friends from the deep woods,
said his father.
Sammy couldn’t imagine who it was, but he was ready to help.
As Sammy and his father went into the barn, Sammy called out, It’s me, Sammy. Where are you? We aren’t going to hurt you.
He glanced over to the corner of the barn and saw a small animal trying to bury himself in straw.
Sammy called to his father, Dad, come over here.
Sammy pushed aside some of the straw and came face to face with a little black puppy. Sammy tried not to scare him. He kindly asked him, What’s your trouble little fellow?
The little puppy was shaking from fright as he brushed the straw from his eyes and looked at Sammy. "I was given as a birthday present to a little girl named Cady. She was so happy when she saw me. Cady picked me up and I knew I finally had a home. They made me a little dog house, and when Cady put me outside last night I went into it
