Author

Cynthia Mills

is a grandmother with six grandchildren, aging from six to twenty, and a mother of four. She had made up stories for her children as they grew up. She seldom reads them a book at bedtime; she makes them up as she goes along. She would also read to them in the afternoon, as a quiet time. Her first story was written when she was ten years old. As she was in the Brownies, they were asked to write a story to read to their pack, using the names of their groups, which were fairies, gnomes, pixies, and elves. As a grandmother, she now reads and tells stories to her grandchildren.

    Cindy - Cynthia Mills

    A Walk Down The Lane.

Sally the sheep was day dreaming one warm sunny day. Sally then gave out such a long sigh. Molly her friend who was standing near by, said, That was a big sigh, what ever is the matter. Nothing really, said Sally. I was just thinking. What about, asked Molly. Well, Sally said, We stand in this field all day long, eating grass and watching the lambs play, there must be more to do. Sally went on to say, Tag the black and white collie dog helps the farmer. He walks the fields and rides on the tractor. Flossy the cat chases mice in the barn, and goes into the farm house for milk. The birds fly from tree to tree, there is a lot for them to see and do. I’d like to go across the field and down the lane, just to see where it goes, said Sally.

With that Sally began to walk across the field towards the big gate at the end. When she reached the gate, she had a problem, how was she going to open it, Sally couldn’t reach the latch. Sally stood and looked at the gate for a while, then had an idea. She would go under the gate. Sally laid down as low as she could, her tummy brushing the ground beneath her.

She managed to get her front feet and head under this is OK she thought to herself. Then o’dear, she was stuck. Sally began bleating hoping her friends would hear her. Molly and another friend Bess ran over to the gate to see what was wrong with Sally. When they arrived they laughed so much they rolled on the ground; Sally looked so funny, lying on her tummy under the gate. Stop laughing and help me, said Sally, feeling very silly and a little cross by now. Molly and Bess tried very hard to stop laughing, but it wasn’t easy. Give me a push, said Sally. Molly and Bess pushed and pushed as hard as they could, but Sally did not budge. As they were thinking hard, about what to do next, Samantha walked by. What are you three doing, she asked, Why is Sally under the gate like that? Molly and Bess trying hard not to laugh said together, Sally, ha ha, wants to go, he he, down the lane, ho ho, to see where it goes, and with that they both started laughing again.

P-l-e-a-s-e, said Sally, Get me out from under here. After a discussion amongst the friends, where nothing they thought of seemed to help, Samantha shouted, I’ve got it. Got what, said Molly. I know how to get Sally out, you may laugh again, but I think it will work. Bess said Tell us your plan then, thinking to herself, nothing is going to help Sally until the farmer comes, then we will be in trouble. Bess, you stand as close to the gate and gate post as you can, said Samantha. Molly you stand along side Bess, and put your front feet onto the back of Bess, Samantha continued. Bess and Molly were puzzled but went along with Samantha’s suggestion. Then Samantha climbed onto Molly’s back, and walked up onto the back of Bess, she then leaned over the gate, and yes, she could just reach the latch, she pushed it as hard as she could, then all at once the gate flew open. As Samantha was leaning on the gate, she wobbled and fell, which made Molly and Bess fall as well, and they all landed on top of poor Sally.

When Molly, Bess, Samantha and Sally got to their feet again, Sally said, Thank you for your help, I’ll be off now. Her three friends were so surprised, Are you still going? Asked Molly. Yes, said Sally, I’ll help to close the gate, and then go down the lane to find out what is down there. Molly, Bess and Samantha pulled the gate as hard as they could and Sally pushed from the other side. When the gate was closed, Sally said, Good bye, to her friends, waving as she said, I’ll see you when I get back, and tell you all about it.

Sally walked down the lane, there was a fence on either side of her, and fields stretching out for miles. There were bushes here and there along the fence. Birds fluttering from bush to bush singing merrily as they went. The sun was shining down on her and made her feel like singing. Trerum—ditty—trerum—tiddy—trerum—trum. Sally was enjoying herself.

She followed the lane down hills and up, round bends and back.

The lane seemed to go on forever. It was beginning to get dark now, the sun had almost gone to bed, and it was sitting on top of the hill in front of Sally. Rain started to fall, very lightly. Sally then looked around her and realized that she had walked a very long way. Looking behind her she couldn’t see the field where her friends were, and in the distance she could see some buildings. Sally began to think, should she go back or go on. The rain began to fall harder. Sally was now feeling cold and lonely. If she went on may be she could shelter in one of the buildings. Sally was now missing her friends. If she was in her field now, Molly, Bess, Samantha and Sally would find a large tree to shelter under and they would snuggle up together to keep warm. Sally began to think may be looking for adventure wasn’t a good thing after all. She decided to walk on; the buildings were looking very inviting now, as it was raining quite hard.
