Until Carly could find away to break the curse, her grandmother or should say great-grandmothers put on her; Carly had to endure them.
The hardest part; is not to let the curse take full control of her life.
CHAPTER 1
Walking out on the porch, that’s connected to my grandmother’s bedroom, but there aren’t any steps, only railings around the porch.
Grandma was sitting in her favorite chair… with her back to me… looking out through weeping willows and oak trees, at the lake. She pointed to the chair that faced her; this is the prettiest place my great-grandmother could find; to find peace.
Grandma isn’t a big woman, matter is, she’s only four foot five. With white gray hair and blue eyes; as blue as the ocean. Although it’s a very sunny summer day, 4th July, 2004 was, a couple days ago. It’s hot outside, but after arriving, it’s turned very cold and gray.
Grandma handed me this very old necklace. The chain and metal that surround’s it is very old, too. The chain and surrounding metal is black with silver enter mixed. Some brown, which I felt, is rust since some flaked off in my hand. The stone is dark blue, like grandma’s eyes.
Carly, want you to have this amulet… it was passed down to me by my great-grandmother; when I was your age.
Started to look at the water; grandma put her hand on my chin. Having me look into her eyes; as I wiped my tears. With every minute, she was getting whiter no… transparent.
I need you to pay very close attention; because I don’t have much time. I don’t know how much I’ll get to tell you,
she said firmly.
Grandma started coughing… bent over… trying to catch her breath. I reached over and patted her back. Grandma took the amulet… putting it over my head… slipped it under my high cut, but short sleeve black blouse, "No one is to know you have this; especially your mother. I should have passed it on to Lillian, but it’s too late, now. She is ill with Alzheimer’s, which she is not aware of.
This amulet is for very special people. It told me that you, were the one to have this when you were born, but not until you were eighteen. This is the age you must pass it on. Only a girl of your blood and no;" coming closer looking into my eyes, again, her hair touching my cheek. Grandma really scared me, mainly because… I could see the doorway… through her face.
Never are you to pass this on to a man, if you have a son, and pass it on to him, it will kill him. The amulet will let you know, for whom you are to mate, but he is never to see it and most of all, is not to touch it.
Grandma stood up … stumbling… holding on to her chair… jumping up grabbing her. She disappeared… barely reappearing … Carly could see her arms while carrying her grandma… lowered her onto the bed. Closing her eyes, coughing; trying to catch her breath, again.
Grandma looked at me as, Carly wiped her tears, again, Carly I’m very sorry for not being able to tell you before; I wasn’t allowed to. Hopefully you’ll understand more as years go by and you won’t hate me. I’m hundred and three. Who knows you may have to live until, you’re two hundred; before you can pass it on.
Grandma raised up on her elbows… looking into my eyes, believe me Carly, I really didn’t want to do this. I love you very, very much; again I’m very sorry,
falling back onto the bed, disappearing, again.
Carly had tears running down her face, believe me grandma; I’ll never hate you.
Reappearing, very slowly in a whisper, "yes you will. I still hate my grandmother. She never told me anything, but left me a letter with the amulet inside. Thinking back now, I do feel I understand why."
Holding her hand, next thing I knew… her hand and body disappeared. Standing up, shockingly walked out slowly… with tears running down her face… before opening the door, looking back, and grandma was still gone… closing it softly behind me.
Lil (short for Lillian) mom came up, putting her arms around me. I’m sorry, I’m sure you’re going to miss her a lot; you were her favorite. No one else could get close to her, like you.
Pushing mom’s arms away, for some reason, her touch made my skin crawl, don’t know why, she even liked me. The way her moods would change, from me to others.
Getting in the car… I looked up at grandma’s bedroom window…saw the curtains…move. I’d swear… I saw grandma looking out…, but when I looked; again. It was the groundkeeper, Charles Monroe. Carly shaking her head, smiling to herself, as she sat down in the car.
Mildred was watching Carly, getting in the car… she moved fast. Charles walked into the room, quick look out the window.
Mildred walking down the hall… towards the third bedroom door, Charles take good care of my granddaughter. I know when the amulet starts in; she’s going to hate me. Until she understands it isn’t my fault. I just wish, I had found away to break the curse.
Turning around looking at Charles; with his cocoa colored skin, kind smile, and curly black hair that’s gray now, why are you looking at me like that?
You’re young, you look forty the age I met you,
he said. And where are your blue eyes?
I am. This is the age I was promised,
she replied, as she walked to the mirror of a jaguar, on the hall wall. Turning on the hall light, "OH! I haven’t seen my jade eyes, in a very long time. Almost forgot what color they used to be." Watching him, through the mirror.
I’m sorry Mildred, I’m not staying to watch over Carly. I stayed all these years because, I love you. Now that you’re free from that amulet; I want to come with you.
Turning his back to her, maybe you don’t love me any more now, that you’re young again and I’m so old,
he replied.
With tears building in her eyes, she went up behind him. Putting her arms around him, facing him,
