    I have a fear of clowns. I’ve had this fear since I was six years old.

    I won’t have any clowns in my house, and I’m talking about pictures, toys, and ornaments. I’ve never been to a circus, and I probably never will. Have you noticed films that have clowns in them are mostly horrors?

    I’m going to tell you where this fear stems from; in the hope it will give me some closure.

    I’d only just turned six. I remember because my aunt had bought me a life-sized clown for my birthday - well, for a six-year-old it was life-sized.

    I called him Clarence. He wore white, with red polka-dotted baggy trousers, and a green velvet waistcoat with large fluffy, yellow buttons. His hair was bright yellow and straw-like. He had blue made-up eyes, a large red mouth and of course, a round cherry-red nose.

    I’ve probably described any clown. However, there was something different about this clown, something sinister even.

    To be honest, I didn’t take to him at all. I tried though. I’d play with him and be nice to him, and I’d even let him sit on the rocking horse beside my bed. But there was something not quite right about
