Adele A. Roberts has a B.A. in education, M.A. in counseling and a CDA in early childhood development. She created the character of Sammy over forty years ago, and began telling her make-believe stories to her students. She started writing the first story of Sammy when a young student asked if there was a book about the little skunk. Although it wasn’t a priority of hers at the time to write stories, she finished part of the first story and set it aside. Years later she found the old cardboard box containing the aged, colored papers of her first story. It was at this time she realized she needed to complete the task she had begun so many years before.

WARM WEATHER RETURNS TO THE DEEP WOODS

CHAPTER ONE

The winter days seemed extra long and cold for Sammy. He woke up several times and was disappointed when he saw that snow still covered the ground. He was anxious to see the path he took to the deep woods. He remembered what Mr. Bear had said, Spring is just around the corner. It was hard for him to wait patiently for warmer weather. He often wondered about his friends in the deep woods. How was Mr. Fox? Was Miss Deer okay? Are Mr. and Mrs. Owl still in their tree home? He would fall asleep hoping that soon the sun would melt away the snow.

One morning Sammy opened his eyes and saw the sun shining brightly. He quickly got out of bed and looked outside. Most of the piles of snow were now wet puddles of water. He could see the new grass through the snow, and Mr. and Mrs. Robin were pecking in the earth for worms.

Sammy shouted with excitement, Mother! Look outside! The snow is melting! Warmer weather is finally here!

Mrs. Skunk had a smile on her face as she said, I knew you were looking forward to this day. You really would like to go into the deep woods and find your friends wouldn’t you? I’ll fix you a good breakfast and then you can go.

Sammy ate his breakfast very fast. His mother laughed. Slow down Sammy! The deep woods will not disappear!
