Chapter One
How do we determine the length and what is a good length and what is not?
They say cricket is a game of length and they don’t say that for no reason! They say the batsman must pick up the length early in order to be great and they don’t say that for no reason! They say bowlers must consistently pitch on a good length to trouble good batsman and they don’t say that for no reason!
It may seem quite simple on the face of it, judging the length that is, but unfortunately it is NOT! There is more to picking the length than just seeing where on the pitch the ball lands! The batsman must know where the ball is coming from, where on the pitch it is anticipated to land, how high it will rise by the time it comes closer to your bat and body, and to some extent, but not necessarily, the speed and time by which the ball reaches you and your bat or body. You might be saying well this is too difficult and cumbersome and such a tedious task to perform and how am I going to pick the length like Viv Richards, but do NOT worry – it is
