Jesse Reeves - The White Event - Book One of an Exciting New Series - Grandson of the Legendary U.S. Marshal - John J. Law

    Chapter One: Night Wonders.

I never really wanted to be a lawman. Most folks often assumed that such a profession would come naturally for someone with a pedigree like mine. After all, not everyone had a grandfather like mine. My grandfather was one of the first colored U.S. Marshals to serve with distinction in what used to be Indian Territory in Arkansas. I won't even go into detail on his achievements. There's more than enough literature that's been written about Grandpa's exploits to fill several Penny Dreadfuls many times over. My grandfather was always known as a no-nonsense lawman who got his man, no matter how difficult it was. Oftentimes, it was very difficult. I should know. Grandpa had to arrest my own father once, and he did it no questions asked. Yeah, you read that right. Grandpa had to arrest his own son once, and he never flinched in doing so. Yeah, my grandfather was the late, great Bass Reeves, one of the most iconic lawmen of the Wild West. I was named after him, and I do believe that my parents actually wanted me to follow in his footsteps someday. I guess it was only natural. Grandpa had distinguished himself in spectacular fashion that you couldn't really blame them for wanting me to follow in his footsteps, somehow.

Well, I guess I was kind of a disappointment.

Contrary to popular belief, I didn't really feel inclined to throw anyone into the hoosegow for any crimes, real or imagined. No, enforcing the law did not run in my blood, and I never really found the idea appealing in any way. You could say that all I really wanted, was a quiet and simple life for myself. Was that really a bad thing? No, I don't believe it was. People simply expected me to follow in my grandfather's footsteps, but that simply wasn't me. Despite this, fate had other plans for me. I didn't know it at the time, but I was destined for anything but a quiet and simple life. In many ways, I was destined to live a life just as thrilling and full of adventure, or more so, than my grandfather's.

Like I said earlier, I really didn't know any of this at the time of my youth. My adventures began when I worked as a wrangler for Nathan Perry, one of the wealthier cattle ranchers in the territory. Back then, I had no idea of what the future had in store for me, nor did I really care. Like my other friends, all I really cared about was getting the cattle safely to the railhead in generally good shape. If we managed to get them all there in one piece, and in good health, well, let's just say Mr. Perry would be happy. I had long realized that it wasn't a good idea to make a man like Nathaniel Perry unhappy. He was a fair boss as far as fair could go, I guess, but
