Retribution is Coming - Texas Ranger Joseph Pendleton - John J. Law

    Chapter One: Playing Favorites

The sun had just set, and the stars were just coming out when Joseph Pendleton sat out at the front porch. It was a habit of Pendleton's to sit at the front porch when he was lost in thought, and tonight was one of those rare nights he could do this. Pendlton wasn't home at their ranch often, as his work as a Texas Ranger was quite demanding. It was because of this that Pendleton and his whole family cherished these rare moments they could all be together.

Thinkin' of somethin' Pa? What's on your mind?

Pendleton's musings were interrupted by a familiar voice. He instantly recognized the voice of his son, Frank Pendleton. Frank had come from inside the house to join his father outside and maybe catch some of the cool, early evening breeze.

Oh, nothing much son. I'm just thinking about the Rumbarr gang.

Joseph mentioned the Rumbarr gang and the chilly night air got a lot colder. Frank could tell by the tone of his father's voice, that he took this gang very seriously, and for good reason. The Rumbarr gang had a gained an extremely notorious reputation as cold blooded killers. They were the sort of badmen that wouldn't just rob a bank or pull off a train heist. They were the kind of badmen that would kill anyone unlucky enough to be in the train or the bank, just for fun. Being a Texas Ranger himself, Frank knew this all too well.

I reckon, there ain't a more sick and twisted gang of owl hoots anywhere in this land an' beyond. Frank said.

My thoughts exactly, son. And I know I'm getting close to catching them and putting them away for good. Joseph said.

Joseph spoke with a firm tone in his voice. It was the voice of a man who had pursued the Rumbarr gang relentlessly. Joseph Pendleton was known as one of the most courageous and dedicated Texas Rangers around. He had no qualms about tracking down the Rumbarr gang despite their infamous reputation. He wasn't afraid of the Rumbarr gang, even if many other rangers were. Pendleton was a fearless man who was completely dedicated to his work as a lawman. Pendleton took his job as a Texas Ranger very seriously. Many of his peers thought perhaps he even took it a little too seriously.

I'm sure you're close to catching those owl hoots, Pa. You're the best that the Texas Rangers have to offer. Hell, you're the whole reason I joined the outfit in the first place.

You flatter me son, but don't sell yourself short. You've done fine work too you know. You have proven yourself as a fine ranger in your own right. You've made me proud.

Frank felt his heart swell with pride upon hearing his father's words. They were the kind of words that any son would want to hear from their father. Even though he was mighty proud
