Beaten, bruised, bloodied and shot in the side, the bounty hunter made his way on foot through the swamp, desperate to evade the vengeance of the father of the boy who had attacked him, and the hungry gators looking for a quick meal. Lincoln Dollar - Stone Cold Killer - John J. Law

    CHAPTER ONE

    Prodigy

Lincoln Dollar didn't know how he managed to get to the swamp. As a bounty hunter, he was used to long and meandering rides. Rides that sometimes seemed to lead to nowhere in particular. As his name implied, his main motivation was the pursuit of the greenback. He was a bounty hunter who hunted men down for a living. Sometimes, in pursuit of his livelihood, he found himself wandering about in places that were unfamiliar to him. This didn't really matter to a hardened soul like him. All that mattered was that he had some bounty to collect. As long as there was some new lawbreaker to track down, and money to be made, it was all good for him.

His travels often had him wandering about until some kind of opportunity presented itself. He was used to this kind of life, so he was not particularly concerned that he found himself in the middle of a damp and dark swamp. He was a bounty hunter and he could handle himself. If any opportunity to make a buck presented itself, he would surely be able to capitalize. If anything came up, he could surely take care of himself. Or at least that was what he thought. He would soon find that he would be very mistaken on both counts.

The general area of the swamp was intimidating. He rode on the trail beside it, but most of the trees and foliage kept the area in a state of semi-perpetual darkness. It was almost as if a giant canopy had been draped above the swamp, making the surroundings quite dim.

Hard to see anything in this place. It's not hard to imagine someone, or something, hiding in the shadows, waiting to jump you. That would be the case if I scare easy, which I don't, Lincoln muttered to himself.

He guided his horse through one of the shallows of the swamp. The horse did not hesitate to cross the murky waters. The trail exited out of the shallows, and he and his steed could continue on their way. It would not be so.

He didn't notice young Gilbert Evans hiding behind some moist bushes. Evans was knee-deep in swamp water, but he didn't mind. The young boy was used to crouching and hiding behind the generous cover that the swamp provided. He had long grown accustomed to this sort of thing. So much so, that the young boy had made a living out of it.

Reckon that varmint looks a lot tougher than most of the people that pass by this way. Don't matter though. I'm sure you can take him, eh, boy?

The kid stroked the back of the head of his dog. It crouched beside him and was almost submerged in the swamp. It was not natural for the animal to do this, but he and Gilbert were anything but natural. The young boy and his dog
