    The warlock heard the boy approaching long before he was within sight. Long accustomed to the sounds of animals moving through the woods, the sound of a clumsy human stomping through the surrounding woods stood out as though he was announcing his presence at the top of his lungs.

    Although at first, the warlock wasn’t sure. The thump, thump and sound of broken twigs disturbed his thoughts. It was out of place, yet vaguely familiar. If, at that moment, he had known it for what it was and what it represented he would have stayed hidden. He would not have bothered hunting down the source of that sound. Because for him, other humans meant only pain and betrayal. But he had been hidden away from humanity for so many long, slow years it was not easy to recognize the passage of man.

    He tracked down the sound to a deer track. It was a small subtle path cut out
