    It was sticky hot the night my dad came home with the Devil at his heels. It was not Alabama hot, this being Kansas, but July in the Midwest is enough to make your ass stick to vinyl.

    How do I know it was the Devil that came after him? Because Mom told me. The last time I saw him was two years ago. He stood up suddenly from the chair in front of the TV. The same chair where he spent most of his evenings in his boxers and a t-shirt laughing his ass off at shows that weren’t funny. But I didn’t hold it against him because I am smarter than him and two years ago, at the age of ten, I was just starting to figure that out. He hadn’t been laughing much that night, just an occasional chuckle while his mind was elsewhere. He looked around the room like he was seeing it for the first time. His gaze slowly swung around the living room of the double wide, moving across the couch that was the color of dried up weeds in the middle of summer, over the chipped and water ringed coffee table in the middle of the room. His eyes skipped over the large screen TV that sat in the corner of the room. He looked at me lying on the floor briefly.

    You be good now okay? He said. You do the right thing.

    I nodded
