About this ebook

When his son dies in a terrible accident, Malcolm retreats behind the walls of the fort his son built, but those walls were more than a child's game, they served a purpose. When monsters begin showing up he realizes that when you hide behind walls to keep out the bad, you must always leave a door for the good.

Malcolm stared for a long time at the glass in his hand, watching the ice slowly melt and shift, providing the occasional clinking sound in the otherwise complete silence. The last of the sounds from upstairs had faded away. The footsteps, the drag of chair legs across the floor, the low rumble of melancholy talk laced with attempts at good cheer were gone and for that, he was thankful.

He looked at his tie, the floor, at the discarded scraps of cardboard, at the tools, a box cutter and duct tape. He did not look at the fort. He had been down here for a least an hour and he had not looked at it though it almost filled the room. He would look at it eventually, had to eventually, but for now, he contented himself with the glass, his tie, the floor, and the tools.

His eyes did find the stack of folded boxes leaning against the wall opposite of the fort. That was almost too much, almost enough to send him over the edge.
