About this ebook
For James Willows there was really no other life but the life of a prospector. Willows was like most of the men who had meandered here to the desolate gold camp. The gold camp was the last stop for desperate men like Willows, who basically had nothing to lose. Men like Willows were living on the edge of society, in an already tough time. In between working for the railroads, or taking menial jobs, men like them had few options to get by. But James Willows and the other men in the gold camp did have one thing going for them.

James Willows - The Prospector - John J. Law
Chapter One: Heart on Fire
For James Willows there was really no other life but the life of a prospector. Willows was like most of the men who had meandered here to the desolate gold camp. The gold camp was the last stop for desperate men like Willows, who basically had nothing to lose. Men like Willows were living on the edge of society, in an already tough time. In between working for the railroads, or taking menial jobs, men like them had few options to get by. But James Willows and the other men in the gold camp did have one thing going for them. The men were persistent and still kept the hope of striking it rich alive in their hearts.
Like the other men at the camp, Willows managed to find a few grams of gold here and there, but nothing of any real significance. Despite his many setbacks, nothing deterred the determined prospector. For James Willows, finding his grubstake was not a matter of if, but when. In his mind, he simply had to just stay persistent and keep on going.
While most of the men at the camp were persistent, James Willows was different. He was downright tenacious. Willows had suffered a lot more misery than most, having lost what little savings he had in prospecting, with nothing to show. He also lost his wife to the consumption, and was basically alone and desperate. The dream of striking it rich was the only thing that kept Willows going. It was a dream that burned strong and bright in the prospector's heart, no matter what.
The dream burned brightly in his heart, as he went to bed at the camp's inn. The inn provided basic living quarters for most of the prospectors at the small camp. Willows had spent most of the day prospecting for gold. Unfortunately like most of them, he did not have much to show for the day's efforts. Unlike most of them however, Willows was a frugal man. While the other men caved in to their feelings of desperation by gambling or drinking at the local bar, Willows chose to simply sleep off the day's hard work. Willows did not see the point of wasting what little money he earned on frivolous vices.
Once he fell asleep, Willows was transported away from the small bedroom, and out into the wild woods outside. He noticed the trees around him and the moon above. He felt lost and tense as he wandered through the unfamiliar woods. He wandered for what seemed like an eternity in the unfamiliar and threatening woods until he came upon a strange sight. It was an unusually large wolf. The wolf was much bigger than most wolves that Willows had seen, and it had shiny, blood, red eyes.
It was not just the appearance of the wolf that Willows found strange. Despite its huge size, Willows did not find the wolf threatening. The natural instinct of any man upon seeing
