    I breathed in and out. My heart was pounding so hard it hurt. Just breathe, I reminded myself. He’s only your boss.

    Well, ex-boss was more appropriate. And if we wanted to be completely accurate here, he was only the son of the family I worked for as a housekeeper. I used to clean their house every other Saturday during high school, trying to make a little money for myself. Still, Matthew and I used to be pretty close. We’d lost touch sometime after his parents’ divorce, which was when my employment with them ended.

    And in the time since, Matthew had somehow turned himself into a millionaire.

    I still wasn’t too clear on how that had happened. I only knew about it through my mom, who’d kept tabs on the family from a distance, feeling a strange maternal pride even though she didn’t share blood with him. Like all mothers should, she compared me to him, lamenting my so-called laziness, my lack of ambition, and definitely my financial inaptitude.

    It had been the latter that landed me in this very predicament.

    I shifted my car into park and cast a look over Matthew’s new home, a lakeside townhouse that was modest in size, but I was sure came with a hefty price tag. Homes in this part of Detroit were going for millions.

    I checked my makeup in the rearview mirror and adjusted some loose pieces of hair. My stomach clenched in knots. I’d considered going to the bank to take out a loan, but it would’ve been impossible with my credit. I was somehow even more nervous about asking Matthew for money than I would have been with a bank, though, and I couldn’t exactly figure out why. Maybe it was the fact that we’d been
