    Welcome to Blackthorn Stables in Galway, Ireland.  You are about to make lots of new friends.

    Emily – age 9, has a grey Connemara pony called Basil.

    Sophie - age 9, has a black Connemara/Welsh pony called Daisy. Her parents run a guesthouse and pub.

    Jack – age 8, has a red bicycle and rucksack.

    Conor – age 14, has Rocky, a dun Connemara pony on loan. A cousin of Emily. Mum has holiday cottages.

    Benji – age 6, a smart, fox red Labrador dog.

    Mrs. Ryan – owner of Blackthorn Stables in Galway.

    Inspector Oliver Oddsocks – the local policeman.

    Officer Katie Catchem - the local policewoman.

    Benny ‘Bones’ O’Brien – village museum manager.

    Miss O’Keefe – the local librarian.

    Miss Lewis – Chocolate factory owner

    Chapter 1

    Emily leaned forward in her saddle as Basil jogged up the little trail through the sandy dunes, swishing his grey tail.  Behind her she heard Sophie giggle a little as Daisy, her Connemara-Welsh cross surged forward, cantering a few steps.

    Wait up, Jack called from the back of their little group.  It's alright for you two on ponies! Bikes don't do well in sand you know.

    Emily stopped Basil at the top of the dune and looked back.  Sorry Jack, she called.

    Sophie joined her patting Daisy's black neck.  You should learn to ride, she added.  Mrs. Ryan would let you borrow a pony from Blackthorn you know.

    Jack huffed and puffed up the dune pushing his red bike with Benji, his red labrador dog darting around him. 

    Thanks, but I'll stick to my good old red bike. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I love horses but I just don't love riding horses!

    Sophie giggled.  She glanced across the flat expanse of short green grass they'd ridden onto and grinned.  Emily followed her gaze towards the old stone farmhouse that sat close by. 

    A few picnic benches were dotted around outside part of it, their sunny yellow umbrellas shifting a little in the spring breeze.  A sign on the side of the building in the same yellow colour read The Chocolate Factory.

    I can't wait until Miss Lewis is making chocolate ice cream again, Sophie sighed.

    Her Christmas cocoa is the best, Jack replied.

    Well, I for one can't wait for the Easter eggs, Emily put in, glancing at the factory.
