Therapeutic Writing - the Power of Writing in Personal Transformation - Ana Mafalda Damião

I was 11 years old. From that moment on, everything changed. I lost my innocence and discovered loneliness, authority, adulthood, and fear. My salvation was reading. Reading good books, taking refuge in those worlds where life was thrilling, intense, one adventure after another, where I could feel free and happy again. And I wrote. In secret, like someone indulging in a forbidden vice, a forbidden passion. Literature ceased to be a game. It became a way to resist adversity, to protest, to rebel, to escape the unbearable; my reason for living. Since then and until now, in every circumstance where I felt beaten down or struck, near despair, throwing myself body and soul into my work as a writer has been the light that marks the exit from the tunnel, the lifebuoy that brings the castaway to shore. Mario Vargas Llosa

    Introduction

The concept of writing as a healing therapy has been documented relatively recently, but as early as the late 19th century, Joseph Breuer, a collaborator of Sigmund Freud, spoke of the healing potential individuals could achieve through narrative, by being able to speak about their lives uninhibitedly. Breuer termed this technique the talking cure. This method would later be adopted by Freud to develop his theories and techniques of psychoanalysis.

Although well over a century has passed, it is only in recent times that healing writing has begun to gain importance. Much of this can be attributed to the research conducted by James W. Pennebaker (considered one of the pioneers of writing therapy) since the late 1980s. Pennebaker started from the idea that inhibiting traumatic events produces high levels of stress, which in turn exacerbates or accelerates psychosomatic processes that weaken the immune system and harm health.

In a study initiated in 1983, with his collaborator Sandra Beall, Pennebaker analysed the relationship between writing and mental and physical health. From this study, they concluded that the impact of reflective writing on feelings and traumatic events was significant, and through medical examinations, they were able to prove that the health of the patients undergoing analysis remained in better condition than others.

Continuing this research, Pennebaker discovered that those who confronted their traumas while writing developed congruence between the activity waves of both brain hemispheres, causing their heart rates to slow down and their muscles to relax. This process energizes T lymphocytes, strengthening the immune system and making
