About the Author
I am a graduate student from the University of Phoenix in San Diego, California. I enjoy reading and sharing my thoughts with people who like to hear the other side of the story.
Despite everything, I love life.
High Suicide Rates
We live in a contemporary society where almost all kinds of people, genders, and cliques are welcomed. The keyword here is almost.
As we inch towards a more accepting society, it must be noted that this move is prolonged and gradual. The truth is bullies walk among us at large. They openly attack those who are vulnerable and make crude jokes at their expense. Thus, it is no surprise that suicide rates among teenagers and young adults have skyrocketed over the last few years.
Suicide is one of the biggest contributors to early death in America. According to research, it is one of the top 3 leading reasons behind the mortality rate in the United States for people within the 10-34-year-old age bracket. It was also reported that for every young person that successfully commits suicide, there are thousands who attempt it.
Not only is this alarming news, but it is rather scary. If we do not take steps to reduce and eliminate this, things can go horribly wrong in the future. If this keeps up, we will inevitably lose thousands of people from the younger generation to suicide.
The statistics are usually different for everyone based on various factors such as age and gender. For the purpose of this book, it must be noted that cliques that represent minorities are high up on the list of those who commit, attempt, or even contemplate suicide.
Life Advice for Teenagers
Teenage is a difficult time. Many people struggle to survive that period of their lives. But when you look back at your life, most of us have plenty of advice for our younger selves.
Here are a few pieces of advice I have for you because I was a teenager not too long ago.
• You must be wise and strong-headed.
• Do not let other people influence you.
• Be mindful.
• Be positive.
• Do not let anyone peer-pressure you. You make your own choices and decisions.
• Do not say ‘yes’ when you want to say ‘no.’
• Set boundaries early on, even if they make you a jerk.
• Think over your decisions – do not act impulsively. Living in the moment sounds fun until you make a mistake and spend the next five years of your life correcting that mistake and regretting your spontaneous decision.
• Be confident about yourself, and never let anyone put you down.
• Don’t follow trends and trendsetters: be yourself.
• If you are bullied, put a stop to it no matter what.
• Speak up! Do not suppress your thoughts.
• Avoid mindless surfing on the internet – especially when it comes to dark subjects.
• Be careful with drugs. Getting involved with drugs early on may make you look ‘cool,’ but it will only mess up your life in the long run.
• Think of the bigger picture; always look at the long-term plan of it all.
Now, it is no secret that the suicide rate among teenagers is increasing. However, during studies, researchers have categorized teenagers based on their music preferences. Obviously, music is something they are consuming all the time.
The studies showed an association between being a heavy metal fan and suicidal risk. Researchers also identified people who self-harm are associated with the same lifestyle as that of an Emo person.
Emo (short for emotional) is a sub-culture and clique many people – especially youngsters- fit into. As the name suggests, members are emotional people. But there’s more to it, isn’t there?
Emos are people who identify themselves as outsiders – they look at the world from the perspective of an outsider. Not only that, they make sure that their appearance is that of an outsider. They tend to wear black clothes (Preferred clothes: skinny jeans, band tees, wristbands, studded belts). They are usually adorned with dark eye makeup and typically have bangs and dyed hair.
Furthermore, they love isolating themselves. They are willing to go to extreme lengths to isolate themselves. For instance, they listen to loud music to keep their distance from people. Hate those around them and themselves, have lost all hope. They deal with life with a pessimistic attitude and would prefer not to exist.
Moreover, they absolutely love the idea of death and always have to mention their depression. Once they constantly surround themselves with a depressive environment, they are more likely to have suicidal tendencies.
Emos usually come from broken families or abusive households. Considering that they have so much in life, it is understood that this group of people emanates sadness. Unfortunately, most people fail to see or understand where they are coming from.
In fact, they go as far as to bully them. The combination of bullies and emos is deadly. While an emo person wants to loudly express their emotions, a bully would never realize where these emotions are coming from. They would never realize that their ignorant attitude can have severe consequences.
An emo person, all while dealing with their own problems, usually adds more problems to their life through their lifestyle. While screaming out your emotions is healthy, it is never okay to display each thought to everyone. Some things, like their need to die, should be kept under wraps and must always be shared with people who genuinely care. When they are trying to display their emotions, they must also realize that not everyone is as empathic. Not everyone will understand. This, in turn, only furthers their self-hatred and ignites their self-esteem issues.
An emo person has already surrounded themselves with hate. They don’t further need it from other people. However, when more hate is thrown at them, it only adds to their suicidal tendencies.
This is why I believe we have failed collectively as a society. We must work together to prevent suicide because every life matters! Let us
