Introduction
Fatherhood is a different experience for every dad. Although there are common denominators, when it comes to raising a child, each of us is on a different planet. However, there is one thing we all have in common: Parenthood is the most beautiful and challenging experience we will ever have. What kind of dad do we want to be? What parenting style do our children need? Throughout this book, we will search for the answers to these answers.
My name is William T. Harrison and, like you, I have been a navigator of the tumultuous seas they call parenting. Throughout even the stormiest moments, over many years, the ability to adapt is a fundamental tool for raising healthy children. And there, beneath the darkest clouds, Stoicism found me. This book is not only intended to be a guide, but, rather, a warm hug for parents who, like me, have felt the call of Stoicism and wish to integrate it with the complexities of modern parenting.
I remember those early days of parenting, when nights turned into days and diapers were changed, trying to stay calm in the midst of chaos. I found comfort in Stoic teachings after experiencing a personal tragedy in my 30s. The loss of a friend and the collapse of my joint venture threw me into a search for direction.
In ancient Greece, Zeno of Citium, the visionary behind Stoicism, lost his ship and merchandise during a storm, later finding himself in Athens with few resources. In his search for solace and wisdom, he immersed himself in the teachings of Socrates and the Cynics before finding his intellectual home in Stoicism.
Thanks to philosophy, Zeno discovered a complete approach to life, a set of ideas that embraced ethics, logic, and physics. Fascinated by Stoicism’s ability to provide sound principles in the midst of adversity, he adopted this philosophy as a guide for his own life and founded the Stoic school in Athens. Zeno presented Stoicism as a lifeline, a philosophy that not only calms emotional storms, but also offers solid principles that allow human beings to lead a virtuous life.
Imagine Zeno, facing the waves of the sea and the storms of life, seeking philosophical answers in the dialogues of Socrates. These personal experiences influence him to create a philosophy that has stood the test of centuries.
Just as Zeno sought wisdom to overcome his challenges, we can apply Stoic principles to our own odyssey as parents. We will see throughout the book that Stoic ethics can guide our daily decisions as parents. Through constant decision-making, we carry out our existence. The vast majority of them are minor decisions, but, sometimes, life takes us by surprise and requires us to take transformative actions.
What benefits might we gain from discerning what we can and cannot control in the journey of parenthood? How much can having a modern stoic father add to our children’s childhood? Is Stoic philosophy even applicable to parenting? Through these questions, I invite you to reflect on the connection between Stoic philosophy and parenting. Could it be that, like Zeno, we will find in Stoicism a beacon of wisdom to navigate the complexity of parenting in the modern world?
This book is for you, stoic father. Here you will find more than theory; you will find empathetic stories and practical advice that will guide you through every step of parenthood. I understand, share, and go through every dad’s challenges daily. From the fear of not being good enough to the complications of conversations about growth and responsibility, each stage presents us with its own storm of uncertainties. The four Stoic virtues—wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance—become reliable beacons, lights that illuminate even the darkest corners of our insecurities.
In this literary journey, the central purpose is to immerse ourselves in the fundamental principles of Stoicism, highlighting the immense value and transformative capacity that the four virtues can bring to our lives. Thinking of a virtuous life as a motivation that invites us to explore the practical application of this ancient philosophy in daily decision-making, cultivating wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance in the very fabric of our existence as parents.
From small decisions to monumental challenges, we seek to illustrate how Stoicism can be a trusted guide in the odyssey of modern parenting. Recognizing the universal aspects of the parenting experience, we strive to transcend individual and cultural differences. And it will be in the differences where each one of us will find their way.
Looking at everyday life, we will see how to integrate Stoic concepts into real situations. I try to be not only a theoretical compendium, but also an empathetic and experienced companion on the journey of parenthood. The odyssey begins here. So, as you delve into these pages, think of me as a companion on your journey, ready to offer comfort when you need it and guidance when you seek answers.
I am excited to set sail with you toward parenting that is richer, more meaningful, and connected to the timeless teachings of Stoicism. Are you ready to embark on this adventure together?
