Checkmate!
, shouted Darren as he ran around the room celebrating. Harry, his elder brother, who couldn’t believe he lost to a child. He just sat there, with a blank face, eyes red with anger so much that they were noticeable from a mile away. You cheated...How could this be...
, he yelled at the top of his voice, as soon as he came back to his senses. He stood up, throwing the chessboard at Darren. There was a loud smash followed by the silence of realization. Meanwhile Darren cried, Harry trying to run away tipped his toe and fell. He hit his head on the table corner. There was so much blood, it looked like a crime scene. The babysitter came running hearing Darren crying as fast as her legs could carry her. oh my god, what happened? Harry, what did you do this t.......
, the babysitter stopped. There were no words to describe what she was seeing. She was trying to keep a straight face, but not for long. Horror filled her face completely. She went completely white. With her eyes sat on Harry, she tried to speak and succeeded in a while, Ha....Harry....Is th...this a prank?
She stepped a little bit closer, scared to death, she opened her mouth again, Harry, are you okay?
Meanwhile Darren kept crying but nobody could hear him. The babysitter had lost all her senses after seeing what she saw. Poor Darren, there was nobody to console him. After a while Darren was tired of crying so he stood up to get a glass of water. He was so busy in crying; he didn’t know what had happened while he was crying. Jenny! What are you doing he....Y..You killed my brother?
Darren couldn’t believe his eyes, he had only seen these things in video games so, it was normal to him but Jenny, she was still having difficulty breathing. Ignoring Darren completely, she stepped closer. Harry...please stop. This is not funny! I AM SCARED OVER HERE!
she exclaimed as soon as she got her senses back. I am calling DAD!
shouted Darren.
You will do no such thing. Let me handle this, any second he is going to wake up and be like HAHA got you.
Jenny said as she rushed to stop Darren.
Darren stopped and followed Jenny to the room again. She shook Harry who was laying still as if somebody had taken out his soul.
Harry...Harry...Harry
, Jenny shouted multiple times before giving up completely.
I can’t tell Darren, if he calls his dad, I’ll lose my job. What if I go to jail?
, Jenny was completely lost in her thoughts until she heard the doorbell ring. Fear came over her face. Her pupils got smaller; she turned pale. She was in complete shock. She got up shaking and started walking towards the door weakly. Her head faced down with sorrow and guilt because her carelessness led to this. She started imagining herself in jail. She took so long to open the door; the doorbell rang constantly. Darren jumped to open the door, but she pushed him.
Now Darren knew, she wasn’t going for the door at all, she was all along stalling for a moment to sneak out the kitchen window.
She killed Harry. She is running away... She is running away...
Darren kept shouting so, the person knocking could hear him. The parents heard the call and started breaking down the door. It took a few hits but then it broke. Darren took the parents to the kitchen, but Jenny was long gone.
Olympics Runner
ASIDE FROM THE FACT of how much it had been raining from the past few weeks, it was Jenny’s lucky day. The sun shined brightly right above her head. She sat foot on the cold lawn grass closing the window behind her. The coldness swooped from the feet to the legs when she realized it was not a good idea to go barefoot. She thought of turning back to get her shoes but heard door banging and Darren shouting, She is running away... She is running away...
Why am I running? I didn’t do anything, I am sure I can explain what happened, but would they listen?
She thought to herself. But it was no time to be thinking. She had already made her mind about running. She ran like she had never before. There was no time to think, how she looked while running or how other passersby were noticing. She ran for 15 minutes and then turned back to see, if she had made any progress. To her surprise she couldn’t see the house and no one was chasing her. I didn’t think I could run that fast!
thought Jenny. She faced towards her house and started walking struggling to breath. Shit...I could have explained myself, but no you had to run Jenny and exhaust yourself...
, she scolded herself. She suddenly faced opposite direction and started pacing quickly.
There was no telling as to what was going on in her mind, she was getting a lot of thoughts of how she should or could have handled the situation. Darren’s parents already knew where she lived, so she couldn’t go back there. The fear of going to jail and being unable to explain herself came over her. Where am I going to go now, I AM HOMELESS!
, she had a strange discomfort in her heart. Who wouldn’t, she just lost her house because of her lack of ability to face extreme situations. Her mind had lost the ability to think properly. A lot was going on, at a speed, she knew she couldn’t handle. She stood there, hopelessly in the middle of the street, barefooted, looking like she escaped from a mental asylum. She was too busy going through her thoughts to even realize how she looked or how every other passerby was looking suspiciously. She looked up, with a spontaneous joy on her face. Her eyes sparkling and a wide smile could be seen through her jumbled hairs.
What if I stay in a hotel, until I figure out what to do,
she said loudly enough for only her to hear.
Now what was that hotel’s name which Karen told me was close to my house?
she tried to remember the name so she could go there.
Are you okay, miss?
, her thoughts were interrupted by an old man.
She jumped up with fright, looked away and started pacing away. After trying to get away for some time, she stopped, the joy she had moments ago had gone.
What am I doing, I am acting more suspicious. I need to get myself together...
, smacking herself on the head lightly as she thought to herself.
aaah I remember now, it was Kingston Hotel...
the same joy from before could be seen.
She stopped a taxi and got in. Kingston Hotel,
she said. The taxi driver who had a feeling of suspicion still started the taxi and pressed his foot against the gas. The taxi started moving. Jenny was about to forget about all the problems she was dealing with just when she told the driver to stop suddenly, got out of the taxi and started walking away quietly. She just realized, she left her purse back at Darren’s with the cash and credit card. Again, saddened, she kept walking towards the Hotel. After walking for 15 more minutes, she could now see the hotel. She rubbed her eyes to make sure it was not a desert mirage. Her feet started moving faster as soon as the Hotel came in sight. It felt to her that the Hotel was moving away from her. Tired, she just kept walking as she had no other choice. She walked and walked until she stood in front of the hotel gate.
She just admired the beauty of the hotel for a while just standing there with a wide smile, and a face with happiness written all over it. Although it was a normal Hotel but she had gone through a lot for the past 2 hours, and this was the only good thing that had happened since. After admiring enough, she decided to go inside. She reached to open the entrance door but was interrupted by the security guard.
Excuse me miss you cannot go inside
Why?
Step back please or I’ll have to call the mental asylum
What do you mean? I am not crazy. I live in my house, but it has pest problem so I have to spend some time here...
she reached to pull out her id to where her purse would have been if she didn’t forget it.
Devastated, she knew she had to run again. She stormed out of there and sat on the hotel walkway outside. Why me?
she said as she looked up desperately. Her looking up was strange as she didn’t believe in GOD or Devil or heaven or hell. But she didn’t care about her beliefs based on the situation she was in. She also realized that if police were involved, she would be traceable because of her id in the purse. She had to think quickly. She was going through her thoughts once more. She was interrupted by the feeling of hunger. This feeling was a mental breakdown for her as if she was not going through enough. Not that she would like to do it but she had to reside to stealing.
No way I am doing that
she thought.
Do you have a better idea?
the inner person spoke.
I guess you’re right. It’s not stealing. It’s just borrowing.
That’s my girl.
Her intrusive thoughts won and she looked up searching for an easy target. She saw a woman who looked like she carried cash with her in the distance. She rushed to her and grabbed the purse and ran quickly. She had already made her mind so no second thoughts were welcomed. After getting away, she opened the purse. Sadly, there was no cash in it, but she found hair color which was perfect since the police would be tracking her down. She forgot she was feeling hungry or why she stole in the first place. She went to the public restroom and started dyeing the hair. She couldn’t care less about the color. She was halfway dyeing her hair, when she realized something. The joy on her face was unimaginable. Whoever saw that joy wouldn’t even know what she had been through in the past few hours.
The smile was wider, the eyes were more sparkly as she remembered, There was a nanny-cam to monitor the footage in the room where everything happened. I could use that footage to prove my innocence.
She washed her hair, putting her mind off of everything except on how to get hands on that footage. The color ended up being red. She looked hideous, but her mind was only struggling to think of a way to obtain that footage without being seen or caught.
That’s it! It is so perfect.
she exclaimed leaving the restroom trying to find a place to stay until things get in order.
Little Johnny
SWEETIE, COME DOWNSTAIRS! The tea is ready!
Beth yelled as she set up the dining table.
I’ll be right down, Mom!
Johnny yelled back from his room upstairs.
Today was Johnny’s first music lesson. He had to take piano lessons because he struggled with playing the piano and he had to play it in the school function. Beth and Jonathan, his parents both insisted Johnny to take the lessons because they didn’t want to see him play badly in front of everyone. That would be embarrassing for him.
After a few minutes Johnny got out of his room, dressed in a plaid beige overcoat and a plaid flat Irish cap. He got down the stairs with style, sliding down the railing.
Careful there, little Johnny, you might fall and die.
Jonathan chuckled as he sat on the table.
I wonder who will solve the case of little Johnny’s death? I hope its Sherlock Holmes...
Beth added as she poured Jonathan tea.
Johnny entered the living room, annoyed by the teasing, he sat down without answering. He pretended to smoke a pipe with a piece of plastic shaped like an actual pipe. Johnny always wanted to be a private detective, a 12-year-old boy who had a lot of dreams to pursue. He wanted to solve at least 100 cases in that career. It was his goal, passion and will to live. He was fond of Sherlock Holmes and Johnny’s reading shelf was filled with his murder mysteries.
So, will you tell us about how you solved your last case.
Beth continued teasing.
Mom, please stop. One day I am going to become the best detective in the world.
Johnny sighed.
Let’s start with the city, little Johnny,
said Jonathan sipping his tea.
Johnny stood up, leaving his tea and stormed out of the house. He felt disgraced. He was very sensitive when it came up to these situations. He liked being called a detective so his parents used that fact to joke around with their little boy. And Johnny usually reacted this way. He would either leave the scene or argue about having good deduction skills.
Sweetie, we’re kidding. We love you. At least finish the tea please.
Beth tried not to laugh.
Aww that little boy is so adorable.
Jonathan said in a heartwarming voice.
He sure is!
Beth added.
Why do they always do this, don’t they believe in me, do they think I am joking?
