    What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis can be defined as a chronic systemic inflammatory disease distinguished by continuous symmetric irritation of several peripheral joints. It is the most common inflammatory rheumatic disease and is characterized by the improvement of the chronic inflammatory proliferation of the synovial linings of diarthrodial joints, which leads to aggressive cartilage destruction and progressive bony erosions. If left untreated, rheumatoid arthritis usually results in progressive joint destruction, disability, and ultimately premature death.

In the United States, the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis is about 1% among the basic population; comparable rates of prevalence are already noted worldwide.

When rheumatoid arthritis attack is triggered, it causes unbearable pain in and around the joints. A joint is the intersection of two human bones and a smooth and durable substance called the cartilage covers the ends of these bones.
