My parents taught us these phrases which have become ingrained in our inner selves and are now part of our DNA:

"You are very intelligent, it's just that your dad is too poor. Don't be afraid. Poverty is temporary; you just have to work hard. We are very poor, but there are people even poorer than us. God's help comes from above. We must pray to stay healthy, as only through education and hard work we can help our family.

Finish everything you start. Whatever you say, you must do. You must never leave things badly done or abandoned. You have to do your homework and be obedient in your execution.

It is better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond. Be a leader!

When knowledge is scarce, cunning must be used.

Break Your Barriers - ANGEL CHUNG CHING

Dedication

To my parents (Jorge Chung and Doris Ching), brave protagonists of the most moving stories of courage: long-suffering forgers of the most incredible family history, patient artisans of the identity we now proudly defend, inspirers of our noblest actions and most remarkable effort. Great dreamers and authors of this great legend and legacy.

To all my seven brothers (Augusto, Luis, Cesar, Ricardo, Juan, Jorge, and Jesús) and six sisters (Esperanza, Eugenia, Luz, Juana, Isabel, and Luisa), making a total of fourteen with me, because together, we were part of this tale of love, courage, struggle, sacrifice, and family unity. We can say that we found happiness with modest means: together we fought and celebrated; together we studied and played; together we laughed and cried. United, we worked, and united, we enjoyed. When we fell, we all got up together. Together we went through starvation, thirst, cold, heat, illness... and together, we were filled with hope, faith, strength, optimism, and struggle. We were born from the same womb, we grew up in the same home, and we will die with the conviction that we did and gave our best to keep that family flame burning for many generations.

Together, we suffered extreme poverty, and thanks to my all of them, we emerged stronger and more resilient. We are proud to recognize that they are examples of courage, honesty, perseverance, resilience, punctuality, respect, humility, hard work, sacrifice, tolerance, effort, love, gratitude, forgiveness, initiative, creativity, decision-making, competitiveness, problem-solving, adaptability, flexibility, planning, education, responsibility, trust, character, empathy, leadership, obedience, and many other skills and values. What more could I ask for?

I also cannot deny the evident hand of God that was always taking care of us, protecting us, and guiding us to what we are now by His grace. The numerous dangers, problems, difficulties, and ill-intentioned people around us couldn't compare to God's goodness. The kind-hearted people we encountered along the way to safeguard us couldn't have been mere coincidences.

To my children, Andrea, and Angel (Kolion), for their companionship, shared experiences, and for always being there for me through thick and thin. You are an example of love, loyalty, and honesty, and you were the ones who inspired me to follow the path of change and adapt to your own challenges.

Acknowledgements

To the entire Chung Ching family, for their unwavering support and for being a part of this great story that continues to unfold across multiple generations.

To the thousands of karate practitioners from Japan, China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Canada, the USA, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Chile – including teachers, colleagues, competitors, and students of this martial art: thank you for all those moments of practice, effort, competition, training, learning, and celebration. Each of you played a role in shaping my understanding of this wonderful martial art.

To all my bosses, teachers, leaders, colleagues, collaborators, and friends from each of those countries who welcomed me with open arms, thank you for your feedback, companionship, work, teachings, and experience. All those years of work have served to shape me and forge me into a global leader, an ambassador of corporate cultures, and a passionate advocate for the development of people as our greatest asset.

I would also like to express my gratitude to María Angelica, who motivated me and prayed for me to be able to write and publish this book.

Prologue

The Chung Ching family

The Chung Ching family names, in chronological order, are as follows. We all have Chinese and Spanish names. The meanings of the Chinese names reveal that our parents missed and longed for their homeland (China). They chose names such as: Moon God, Culture, China, Prosperity, Flower, Beautiful, Cleanliness, and Precious Music. However, when they experienced extreme poverty and had to face it with great optimism and courage, they chose names with meanings of Strength, Power, Stability, Prosperity, Education, System, Philanthropy, Hope, Peace, Harmony, Health, Safety, Wealth, And Purity.

The names with these meanings reflect the parents' good wishes for their children's future and for the country where we were born and raised. Our parents looked forward with great enthusiasm and hope that, through experience and teaching, we will demonstrate the values and skills we have learned and become the pillars of the family and the country. Also, that we continue to educate ourselves without stopping and working with all our strength to follow the good tradition of Chinese civilization and the country we live in.

One of the things I wondered about when I was a very young child was why my parents, despite living in extreme poverty, with so many sacrifices and suffering, had so many children, one after another. The answer I received from my mother and older siblings was that they were building and writing a legend. I didn't understand what they meant and didn't take it very seriously at the time. My parents passed away more than 30 years ago, and after all this time and much more experience, after having traveled a bit more of the world, I am understanding its meaning, and perhaps the vision or dream of my parents was indeed to write a legend in us. The word legend comes from the Latin legenda, derived from legĕre, which means to read. It is used in the sense of worthy of being read or known and refers to events that are remembered and shared so that the story endures over time.

With this book, I will be sharing a part of my life experiences, lessons I've learned, and my knowledge so that the reader can break their barriers, paradigms, and poverty mindset that prevent them from succeeding, to grow and achieve the goals they set for themselves. This book will also very likely be the beginning of a shift in purpose and direction, moving away from business, operations, and managerial activities toward a more education-focused approach. The goal is to transfer, share, and communicate my experiences, skills, and knowledge to those in need: students, employees, athletes, teachers, entrepreneurs, coaches, among others.

I really see that many of us who make up the Chung Ching family are sharing our stories, knowledge, experiences, and work in each of our environments (family, work, community, religious circles, etc.) to impact and transform human lives for the good of society, and in turn, allow the legacy to continue as a dream come true.

I am sure that many more books will be written by the Chung Ching siblings, and a wealth of knowledge will be transferred to many people. The legend that my parents wanted to share and write about will be strengthening and growing, and their legacy will continue to be alive for many generations in every part of the world where we live.

What Does Break Your Barriers Mean?

Break your barriers is a phrase that has gained a lot of traction in recent years in the realm of motivation and personal development. But what does it really mean to break your barriers?

In simple terms, breaking your barriers or limits means overcoming your own physical, mental, and spiritual barriers to achieve your goals and objectives. It means leaving behind conformity, the status quo, inaction, and mediocrity to achieve excellence in everything you do. It also means not letting yourself be defeated by the adversities, problems, and obstacles that life itself represents.

For many, breaking their limits can look like a difficult or even impossible task, but the reality is that we all have the capacity to do it. All it takes is to want to do it and taking action with a positive attitude, determination, resilience, perseverance, and honesty.

Whether you are a teenager struggling to find your way in life, a student who wants to improve their grades, an employee who wants to advance in their career, an entrepreneur or executive who wants to take their business to the next level, or an athlete or sportsman who wants to improve their performance, breaking your barriers is something you can do.

Based on my experience, I can tell you that economic poverty is not a condition that prevents you from growing. Rather, every step you take to move forward is an achievement that adds to the opportunity to overcome it. On the other hand, there is also mental poverty that hinders your way of acting with negative and distorted thoughts. If
