    The Sniper - Prologue

    The sniper fired from the dark opening in the burnt-out building. The bullets came in our direction and buzzed by us. The sniper was firing a pistol. The slow bullets coming at you from a pistol always sounded like a fat bee in a hurry looking for someone to sting. I could only feel their wind.

    We had to kill the sniper, get his bullets, and continue down the street. I looked at my friend and he nodded. We jumped out and ran down the road towards the building. The sniper fired and we kept moving. I raised my rifle while running and fired a wild shot towards the sniper. I couldn’t waste bullets, the two of us had about ten left. The sniper fired and my last friend fell in the road about twenty feet from me. I ran to the edge of the road and fell behind a tree.

    I was on the same side of the street as the sniper. I was at a bad angle for the sniper to get a shot. I rolled onto my back and leaned my head against the tree to look back at my friend in the road. He wasn’t moving. He was just a mound of clothing in the middle of the road. Just a jacket lying near a rifle.

    I couldn’t remember his name. We had started fighting side by side when there were five of us. One by one we slowly were taken away from each other. I still wore the blood of my first soldier friend who was killed. A grenade had landed in our small campfire when we were eating dinner one night. We all jumped up and dove back away from the fire. Joseph’s foot slipped out from under him on a pan and he fell in place. I saw him start to stand up again and
