A long time ago, magical beings and humans lived together and got along fairly well. One day, however, one human decided to start killing magical beings. But he decided to spare those who fought for him and killed their own kind. Almost all races joined him but one race/family. They were the royal Snow shapeshifter family. They were too proud to bow down to him or kill their own kind. They were completely wiped out. Before the Queen died, she gave her one-month-old son to a maid for her to hide. The maid’s own baby had died recently, so they did the old switcheroo. The maid ran with him and hid him with one of her relatives in White Crystal Village. He grew up there never knowing who his real parents were and his line continued on. His line grew to be imperfect. The power that was in his blood was diluted. Five hundred years have passed, and the line grew even more diluted. However, one child was born with extraordinary power without knowing why. She is about to change the world for better or worse.

Natalie Phoenix Ember! Get down here now! my aunt yells.

I sigh and put my headphones on and crank my music up. The moon shines on me as I sit on top of my balcony railing and stare at the endless city. White Crystal used to be a small village, but it grew to be the capital of the Kingdom of Heaven. You can’t see the stars at night because of the city lights. I sighed again because I know why my aunt was yelling for me. I beat up a boy who was beating up another boy. I couldn’t sit back and watch him do this, so I beat him up badly.

    Flashback

Get him! Make him pay for getting in your way! Beat him up! were the yells of students cheering someone on I heard as I was headed to my next class. I wanted to keep walking, but curiosity got the better of me. I shoved my way to the front of the crowd and saw the prince of the Capital was beating a wolf boy brutally. I am so glad curiosity got the better of me because what the prince did next had me seeing red. The prince pulled out a knife and went to stab him. One second I’m in the crowd, the next I am blocking the prince’s motion. Everyone let out a gasp and started whispering among themselves. I ignored them and growled at the prince.

Boy, are you okay? You should go to the school’s infirmary if you can. If not, stay out of my way, I told him as I let go of the prince’s wrist, stepped back, and crossed my arms.

You bitch! Who do you think you are? How dare you touch the son of King Black! Bow down before me and apologize and I will let you go. Since you’re also beautiful, let me have my way with you, he demanded.

Hell no! Why would I let a filthy, arrogant, low-life bitch, touch me anywhere? I will not bow down to you because you don’t deserve my respect. Just because you are a prince, doesn’t mean you can bully others. So you can go put yourself in a dark hole, I told him.

You imbecile! I can bully anyone I want to. There is nothing you can do. You are just a peasant, whose parents abandoned her. Your parents didn’t even love you. Even your brother decided to leave, too. They chose to die then live with a failure as a shapeshifter daughter, he told me.

You piece of shit! Don’t ever bring up my parents. They died to defend this country, so respect them. You’re a sissy who doesn’t have the balls to fight me, so you bring up my family. You are nothing to me, I told him as I turned my back to him and walked away.

I sensed him throw a punch at me, so I dodged to the left. He stumbled but caught himself at the last moment. He turned back toward me and threw a punch at my face. I blocked it and slammed my palm into his chest. He went flying and slammed hard into a wall. He fell forward onto his knees and spat out blood. I walked towards him and grabbed his hair, lifting him up. I then slammed a fist into his face.

You. Are. A. Nothing. Piece. Of. Trash. So. Go. Away! I yelled the last word as I punched him in the face with every word, finally letting him go.

He had fallen unconscious. I dropped him and walked away. No one stopped me at all. The bell rang for the next class, and I decided to skip class the rest of the day.

    Present

I sighed and leaned my head back on the wall by the railing. I heard my door slam open and my aunt barges in. She stops by me and puts her hands on her hip. I pause my music and take my headphones off. I look at her, and she is super red in the face with anger.

Natalie, what the hell is wrong with you? You had to beat up Prince Jon. I not only heard that you beat him up from my daughter, but King Black showed up in person. You are going to go downstairs and apologize to him and receive whatever punishment the king decides, she ordered, going back downstairs.

I sigh and get down off the railing. I put up my phone and headphones and went downstairs. The king and prince were sitting in the living room. As soon as they saw me, they stood up. I bowed to them and leaned against the doorframe. King Black stood right in front of me and looked at me.

I am here because you beat up my son. This is a crime punishable by death. What do you have to say for yourself? he asked.

I will not apologize to him because I do not regret it. I would beat him up again in a heartbeat. I saw that he was beating up someone who could not defend himself and defended him. If I see anyone beat someone else because they are ‘below’ them, then I will beat them up too, I told him, respectfully.

I see. So you took it upon yourself to beat him up because he was beating someone of low status? Is that what I am hearing? I’m impressed. No one has been truthful when confronted by me. They normally just say what I want to hear. Because you were truthful, I am going to publicly whip you a hundred times instead of killing you. But in the future, you must promise to walk the other way instead of beating up others, he informed me.

Thank you for being merciful, but I cannot promise to walk the other way. If I see others being beaten up because of their status, I will step in. No matter the status of the beaters. I will not promise. Those with power should protect those who are powerless. If we cannot do so, then what is the point of living? What is the point of having powers? We must choose to do good and not evil. That’s what makes us powerful because we have the support of those who we’ve helped. I do thank you for being merciful, I said.

What? Are you out of your mind? He is offering a chance to live, and you are turning him down? You are just like your parents and brother. That is why they were killed. Their morals killed them and they deserved it, my aunt said.

What do you mean? I thought they died in battle. How did their morals kill them?! I ask in confusion.

Your parents and brother refused to kill everyone in a village and the commander put them to death because they were traitors. That doesn’t matter now. I declare that Natalie Phoenix Ember is a traitor to the crown and will be put to death in three days. Guards! Grab the traitor and put her in prison, King Black ordered and walked out of the house.

I was numb as the guards cuffed me and walked me to prison. They threw me in a cell and walked away. I didn’t even feel when they threw me in. I sat there with my head buried in between my knees and cried. After a while, I stopped crying and leaned my head against the wall and looked at the moon. I fell asleep that way. Hours passed and it now was the middle of the day. No one had come by at all. I was laying on the cot in the cell when I heard more than one footstep approach. They stopped in front of my cell. I ignored them.

Look who it is. It’s the traitor. Is the cell comfy or should we take away the bed? I heard the prince ask someone.

I just ignored them and turned my back to them. I heard the rattle of keys and the cell door open. Footsteps approached me. A hand reached down and grabbed my hair and pulled me out of the bed. I landed on the floor and was immediately surrounded by three guards and the prince. The hand holding my hair let go and grabbed my chin. I glared at him and he just smiled.

Tear off all her clothes and hold her down, Prince Jon ordered.

NOOO! Get your damn hands off me! No! Please! Stop! I yelled with tears spilling down my face.

One guard had a hold of my arms, the other guards were ripping my clothes off. I struggled and was hit in the head hard. I stopped struggling and tried to ignore what was happening to me. They left after having their fill. Only the prince was left. I laid there with my knees to my chest. My whole body was in a lot of pain. The prince crouched in front of me and lifted my face up. I glared at him with hate.

This could’ve all been avoided if you had agreed to walk away. For the next two days, this is what will happen to you. Tomorrow, you will be whipped until I say stop. Don’t worry. I won’t kill you yet, he said, smirking and walking away.

I didn’t reply and passed out from the pain. I was shaken awake the next day and was brought before the prince in the whipping room. My hands were chained above my head and I was forced into a kneeling position. Then the whipping started. I lost count after fifty. After a while, I passed out. I never woke up when the guards and the prince forced themselves on me. I woke up the next day and got ready for my death. I was brought up to a huge platform and was forced to kneel before the king. There were a lot of people here to see my execution. The king stood up and waved for silence.

Dear citizens, today I will execute Natalie Phoenix Ember on the account of being a traitor. She beat up my youngest son, Prince Jon, for nothing. She will die by the sword, the king announced.

He approached me and took out his sword and laid across my neck. His arm swung up and a voice rang out.

Wait! Why are you killing her? She protected me from your son! the voice yelled.

I looked up and saw the boy I had saved, standing in front of me. He looked different though. He was dressed like a prince. Next to him was someone I recognized. It was King Julian and Prince Chase from the Kingdom of Jade. They stepped forward.

Why are you killing her? She saved my youngest son from Prince Jon. This is how you reward her? How dare you? She is under my protection. If you lay a finger on her, I will declare war on you, King Julian threatened.

Wait a minute. She is under my rule and must die for breaking the rules. This is none of your business, Black says and backs away.

By this time my wounds have opened back up. I try to stand but fall backward unconscious. A few hours later, I woke up in an unfamiliar room. I jump up in a panic. When I jumped up, I accidentally knocked over a vase. A maid runs in.

Miss, please calm down. You are safe, she says soothingly coming near me.

I grab a piece of glass and point it at her.

Don’t come near me! Where am I? Who are you? I’m not dead? What happened yesterday? I can’t remember anything! Why can’t I remember anything?! I yell.

You are in the Kingdom of Jade. You are currently in Prince Chase’s room. They saved you three days ago. You have been asleep for three days. When you arrived here, you were bleeding heavily. So the king had his personal physician attend to you. I must go inform the king that you are awake. But first will you please put the shard of glass down? she asks.

I quickly put it down and she went out of the room. I walk to the balcony and look at the city. Tears start rolling down my cheeks as I remember what the king told me before I was put in jail. Everything I knew was gone. My home and friends were gone. The image that I had of King Black was gone. I sat down and put my face in between my knees and sobbed. I had no one to go to, and I was in a new city. I feel someone wrap their arms around me and hug me. This startled me. I pushed them away and jumped up. I saw it was the king who I pushed away. I immediately bow.

I’m sorry! I didn’t know that it was you! I said in a panic.

It’s alright. I should’ve announced myself before hugging you. You looked so sad. It was my fault for scaring you. I apologize, he said, waving my apology away.

Thank you for saving me. I am eternally in your debt, I said.

No need. You saved my son from that prince. My question is, did you know who he was? he asked.

No sir. I saw that he was in trouble and didn’t recognize him from school, so I defended him. My policy is to defend those who can’t defend themselves, regardless of status, I said.

Oh, is that so? You are different. Who are your parents? he asked.

My parents are dead. But my father was Commander Nixon Ember, and my mom was Captain Macy Ember. They died about nine years ago. I just found out why they died. They didn’t want to kill children when the top commander ordered them to. So he killed them as traitors, I told him.

Captain Macy? Your mother was Captain Macy?! Oh my gosh! She was a friend of the royal family. She went missing almost twenty-two years ago and we haven’t seen her since. I am so sorry to hear that she is dead. Don’t worry, you are welcome here and will be treated with respect. You see, Leo was sent to your school to check it out. However, he was attacked as soon as he got there. If it wasn’t for you, he would be dead or badly wounded. So thank you for stepping in and saving him. We are in your debt. If there is anything you need, just ask, King Julian said.

There is something. Is there any way I can go home and grab all my things? There are certain things that I need that only I can get. Please? I ask.

Of course. I will send some guards with you. Ah! I will also send Prince Chase too, he said.

You don’t have to send Prince Chase with us. I think two or three guards are fine, I insisted, shaking my head.

I insist. People may attack you if it’s just you and some guards. Plus, Chase has awesome magic and is part shapeshifter, he said.

Okay. I guess it’s fine. On a different note, is there any food to eat? I’m very hungry, I said, hugging my stomach as it growls.

King Julian laughs and gestures for me to follow him.

Luckily for you, dinner is about to start. Would you give me the honor of eating with you? he asks.

I nod and enter the dining room. There is a huge chandelier and a six-person table in the middle of
