About this ebook
‘When Dead’s not Quite’ ... Written in the first person, this is an account from a man who finds himself stuck between mortal existence, the next phase and beyond. Life is reviewed, revenge is extracted, and souls are healed. ‘Beyond the white light’ stories have been done before. This one goes the extra few yards, posing and answering many questions ... take what you will, and use what you need, or perhaps you have an entirely different idea at what lays beyond this mortal life.
Any connection to persons either living or passed on is strictly coincidental. This is a work of fiction.

Life is a wonderful, exciting, sometimes dangerous and often totally boring trip. I have certainly had a taste of all these slices of the human experience and thankfully have managed not to overdose in any particular compartment.I strive to write as honestly and openly as possible, but will never get drawn into discussing the source of inspiration for any particular tale. They are all true in some way. We all have our own truth. That is the way it is with mankind. My journey is seventy years young as of 2016, and if you don’t find me plonking away at a keyboard, I’ll be somewhere behind the lens of my faithful Nikon, tending my private garden or manipulating some beautiful pieces of glass into some form of art.I write for enjoyment, and always endeavour to capture that ‘I know where he’s coming from moment’. This is my first real attempt at the online publishing world, and would love to take the opportunity of thanking you for popping in to meet me.I hope you enjoy the read, and wish you every success in life. It is a wonderful trip.Rex Jacobs.

When Dead’s Not Quite
I have no idea what happened. I was driving, I do know that. Dan was in the passenger seat and Andy was in the back. Something hit us from behind and sent us spinning out of control. I remember seeing a low brick wall flash past the windscreen two or three times in slow motion as we spun like a top across the bitumen.
The noise of the crash as we went through the wall must have been horrifying. I did not hear it. I was dead before the final impact. My neck had been snapped by an ill-fitting seat belt. I should have replaced the faulty retractor spring months before.
I watched Dan clamber out of his twisted half opened door. He ran around to my side and tried to help me out. He tried to hold my head. His feet slipped on the carpet of shattered glass and he lost his grip. My head lolled onto my chest and angled to one side. He screamed my name and carefully tried to reposition it on my shoulders. It would not fit back where it was supposed to. I was dead. He knew it. He gently lowered my head to where it rested like that of a rag doll.
Andy had joined him by now. He was covered in blood and limping badly. They both leaned into the car and tried to coax me back to life. It was futile. Nothing could be done.
Dan propped Andy on his shoulder and helped him across to the side of the road. Several people had arrived by now and some one was yelling that they had called an ambulance.
An elderly gentleman came to my open door, knelt on the seat and cradled my head.
I stepped away from the scene and watched my limp body being comforted by the old man. I walked back to his side and rested a hand on his shoulder.
‘Thank you’ I said. ‘It’s greatly appreciated, but it’s too late. I’m gone’
He did not hear me nor see me. I was dead. I walked over to my two friends and sat with them. They were being attended by a woman and her daughter. There were people directing traffic, offering advice, talking into mobile phones and others just gawking.
The police arrived and took control of the scene. An ambulance approached from one direction, siren screaming, and a fire truck from the other. Once the medics had confirmed that I was dead, they covered my body in a white shroud. The old man was very upset. He collapsed and fell dead on the roadway. An Image rose from his body and walked past me. It turned and looked at me.
‘Sorry’ he whispered. ‘There was nothing I could do’
His spirit walked toward a shaft of bright light and slowly ascended a transparent stairway. The shaft of light then angled toward me. It felt warm, and comforting. I walked to the bottom step and watched the old man disappear in an opaque mist.
Dan was screaming my name as two medics were lifting my body onto a stretcher. He was standing at the road side, distraught. I ran across to him and threw my arms around his shoulders. My arms went straight through his torso. I stumbled forward and fell to the ground
