It started back in 1971. He was only eighteen years old; we had one daughter, and he worked in Raymond, California, in the foothills. There was a quarry in which the granite was extracted from the mountain called Sierra White. Gary would cut the big slabs of granite and form them into heart-shaped, round, V-shaped, oval, and serpentine top square and other shapes and sizes. He liked his jobs and stayed there for five years; my brother told him of a business that was in need of help in Washington State. We talked about it and sold our home in California and moved to the Northwest. He went before me, and the job he thought he was going to get did not pan out, so in Centralia, Washington, he walked into a granite place, and that day he was hired. They taught him to polish and set stones in the cemeteries; after a year or two, they asked him to sell the memorial markers. First, he would call the people on the phone, then he would take the company car and sell them at the individual homes. A few times I went with him. His boss was amazed at how well he did; sometimes he would sell five a day.

As time went by, he was stirred by God to buy his own business. Of course, I was not sure. We now had three
