I never come to the train station but, I felt strongly like I needed to be here but I was real uncomfortable about it. So, I’m standing by the wall at the end of the platform with my head down. I wasn’t comfortable being in public because of the scar on my face. It was big and ugly and covered the whole right side of my face. So, I wore my hair in two braids and I tried as much as possible to cover the right side of my face with my hair. Okay, so the train pulls up and people got off and then I saw her. I don’t know any way to describe this except it had to be love at first sight because I have never experienced anything like this in my life. Not even remotely. All I could see was her. All at once I loved her, I wanted to marry her, and I desired her something fierce. It was weird and amazing and good at the same time. I wanted to ask her to marry me right then and there but I knew that was too much. So, I asked God to give her to me. She was absolutely beautiful. The most beautiful woman I’d ever seen in my life. I looked her up and down. She was almost black as coal. She had a real short afro. Her hair was black. She looked like she weighed around two hundred pounds. She was about five foot six and her face was lovely. Her eyes were jet black, her lips were full and her smile was just sweet and warm. She was amazing, the most beautiful, sexy woman I had ever seen in my life and I’ve seen beautiful women. I was mesmerized. But then I started desperately thinking about how to be with her and then I just didn’t care how it would look or what she would think. So, I just went over to her and asked her if she was here to visit the reservation and she said yes. Great! I could work with that. Her voice was low, warm and comfortable. She was smiling at me. I smiled back. I couldn’t help it. Then I asked her if she was staying at the Mountainview Hotel and she was. So, I offered to take her there. I’ll take you there and I can show you the reservation if that’s okay with you.
Thank you. Thank you very much!
This had to be God. This woman didn’t know me from a hole in the wall and she’s trusting me. I’m a big guy, all muscle, but still big and my voice is very deep. And with this big ugly scar on my face, I half expected her to be scared of me. But she wasn’t. She showed no signs of fear or any discomfort. So I was glad about that. So, I took her bags and we went to the car and I’m driving her to the hotel and we’re talking like we’ve always known each other. It was so easy to talk to her. She asked me, So do you work at the Mohawk reservation?
I used to. I was the Indian Agent. But I’m retired. Just so you know, our real name is Kanienkahagen. Means
People Of The Flint. The name
Mohawk was given to us by our enemies back in the day. I know Mohawk is easier for you to say so it’s alright. Just wanted you to know since you are interested in knowing us.
Oh. Okay. So should I just say
People Of The Flint?
Sure. But you can say Mohawk. It won’t offend me.
Okay. So…wow! You were the Indian Agent?
Yes.
For how long?
Fifty years.
Wow! Fifty years! You’re an expert. You must know all there is to know about your history and treaties and everything!
Talking to her was so easy. I don’t talk about myself to people, but I just wanted to tell
