The Neuroscience of Effective Leadership - Veli Ndaba
Introduction: What is the ‘Veli Ndaba NeuroEngineering Leadership Effect’ #VNNLE?
The Veli Ndaba NeuroEngineering Leadership Effect centers around my personal story and skill sets. When you take my skill sets of understanding neuroscience and engineering and put them together, you get neuroengineering. I apply the neuroengineering discipline to both building leadership and to changing leadership cultures.
It all starts in the brain. The brain and the entire nervous system respond to the environment around it. So, the culture of the workplace influences our nervous system, and it can make us more stressed, but if there’s positivity, it can trigger positive neurochemicals inside our brain and neurotransmitters or chemicals will encourage good energy to flow (Ndaba, 2022).
So, to create an optimal environment, we must address both culture and what’s happening in the brain; that’s neuroscience. Engineering looks inside the brain, how the neurons and the neural pathways work and how they relate to the body. The brain evolved in a very technical way. The structures in the brain need to be understood at the very deepest level. I want to help people understand how to apply the structural components of the brain, the structural dynamics between departments and leadership and take what it’s happening inside our entire nervous system and put them together.
I’ve been very fortunate to have a background in engineering, and along with my work in neuroscience, I apply this to neuroengineering because I want to build bold and strong leaders in Africa. I want to take this continent from a place of mental darkness and how the world negatively sees it to build the strongest leaders in public and private spaces. I strongly believe that if I apply neuroscience and engineering, we will raise a generation that will take our beautiful and resourceful Africa forward. That’s what I am committed to.
I’ve just come to bring some light because I am inspired by Africa’s true and original meaning, which is light or sunny. My purpose is to help people move from Mental Darkness into Mental Light using Neuroscience and Engineering: The #VNNLE is about Bringing in Mental Light
.
The most powerful thing about leadership is this: Leadership shares light with others. Leaders stand out in front and ignite a torch, illuminating where we are going. The most important thing you can do as a leader is to be vulnerable and tell your story about how you went from darkness to light. I can facilitate that; I can show people that this is what real leaders do. I can unite people and encourage them to use this neuroscience and engineering tool to drive people towards light. I want to be known for light. When you see me, when you bump into me in the mall, on the street, just remember, I am the guy that adds a little bit of light to every talk and everything I write. Every time you see or experience me, just know you will see light: The Veli Ndaba NeuroEngineering Effect
