Chapter 1
Chicago, Illinois
3 Years Earlier…
How was the Academy?
Sasha asked Justin.
Informative.
He replied.
Good his name is Corey Johnson.
How do you know this?
I just do, start with his bitch Marie.
She slid him a picture of her.
I guess I got some work to do.
Yes, you do, oh and Justin.
Huh?
You better get it done, or you will die.
Sasha responded; he nodded his head…
Marie-Ann Claire-Johnson:
3 Years Later…
Baby I'll be home late tonight not too late this time tho.
You're going to be late getting home again Corey?
I asked, annoyed.
Promise I'll make it up to you gorgeous.
He said sweetly.
I guess.
I rolled my eyes.
You mad at me baby?
I didn't say anything, I just felt a bad feeling in my stomach, I always got these feelings in my stomach when he says he'll be home late. I don't smell perfume or see any signs of him cheating so it can't be that. You hear me babe?
Yea Corey just let m-
I was interrupted by a knock on the door. Let me call you back babe there's someone at the door.
Alright, I love you sweetheart.
I love you more.
I replied, I hit the end button sitting my phone on the kitchen counter. I quickly dried my hands and rushed out of the kitchen once the knocking started again. I'm coming stop banging on my door.
I say as I reached the front door, I looked out the peephole at a freckled face brown skin man, very well dressed. I raised an eyebrow as I opened the door, Look I don't want to buy whatever it is you're selling.
He chuckled, Mrs. Johnson?
He asked.
In the flesh.
I reply.
I'm Justin Cole with the FBI.
He says showing me his badge. Is your husband home?
He asked.
No Corey’s at work, what's this about?
I asked, feeling my heart sink into my stomach.
May I?
He asked, "I moved aside.
Of course, come in you're probably freezing.
He made his way in instantly scanning the house. I closed the door locking it. Sorry to disturb you, the food smells nice I just have some questions for you. Is it alright if I take a seat?
He asked, I nodded.
Please help yourself I hope you're not investigating me.
I say amusingly.
Not you Mrs. Johnson, Uhm how is you and your husband's relationship?
he asked as he took a seat flipping out a notepad.
Happily married 10 years now.
I reply raising an eyebrow.
Your husband ever hurt you? Does his behavior ever change?
Corey’s perfect, what's this about?
I asked, getting offended.
Mrs. Johnson, Is your husband into younger girls?
I laughed, Younger girls? What are you guys trying to accuse my husband of now?
Nothing ma'am just doing my job.
No, he has no fetishes.
Where was your husband last night at 11:30?
He asked.
A bar with a couple of friends from work he texted me told me he'd be late getting home they were celebrating a new account they landed.
And what time had your husband come home?
I don't know a little after 1?
I was irritated at this point. Can you tell me what's this about? What are you trying to accuse my husband of?
Ma'am last night a 16-year-old girl was found raped and murdered, another 3 found last week as well a-
I know you not in here trying to accuse my husband of raping no little girls, get out now.
Just please listen.
He said politely.
I sighed, What?
Does the name Riff ring a bell?
No, why are you asking me that?
Well, it's believed that's the name your husband goes by in this sex trafficking-
Look I don't think I wanna listen to this anymore this is absurd. You're not about to tell me my husband is abducting and raping little girls, we're trying to have a baby ourselves and we both want a little girl. My husband isn't capable of this, not my husband, you must have him confused with someone else!
Look Mrs. Johnson, I didn't mean to offend you, but this is important there's over 50 young teenage girls missing most found raped and murdered going all the way back to 15 years ago, you sitting here telling me what your husband isn't capable of isn't bringing peace to any of these victim's families I need your cooperation.
And how is my husband connected to this? Huh? You can't come up in here accusing my husband of anything, there's no way he's involved. You got any type of evidence?
I know this is hard to believe but we have substantial evidence linking your husband to these girls not enough to arrest but I can say this won't be the last time you see me Mrs. Johnson, we will bring your husband down and if we find out you're involved in any kind of way, you as well.
He said getting up.
Me?!
I shouted. I had n-
I apologize, I shouldn't have accused you I know it's hard to believe your husband could be involved in anything like this. Just think about the many times he comes home late, the irrational behavior sometimes, look for agitations and signature moves like does he twitch, does his leg shake when you mention certain things. I'll apologize now if we are investigating him, and he comes up innocent. But nothing shows he's innocent besides the fact that he lives a perfect at home life with a beautiful woman.
I smiled at the compliment, It's a lot to take in, here's my card if you ever just need to talk, or you feel like your life is in danger you give me a call and I'll even put my personal cell number on the back.
He added as he scribbled his cell number on the back of the card. I'd greatly appreciate it if you didn't tell your husband about this for your safety and the delicacy of this investigation and if you do, I completely understand just text me and let me know if you tell him he could try and flee the country.
I'll think about it.
Your life may be in danger so be careful.
He gave me the card and a genuine smile before he walked around me letting himself out.
Chapter 2
Marie-Ann Claire-Johnson:
My husband? Rapping little girls?
I asked myself after the agent left. Not Corey. He would never do anything like that.
I had to talk to someone about it, but who? Can't talk to my sister, she'll kill him based on the suspicion alone. Not Myra, my sister would freak out and ask him which could blow up the investigation, but why do I care about the investigation? I should trust my husband, right? I think I would know if my husband was a predator.
I could call Layla, and Kacey! I quickly rushed to the kitchen picking my phone up from the counter where I had left it to go find out this crazy news. First, I had dialed Kacey’s number and soon after added a call dialing Layla number. Once merging the call and placing the phone to my ear, Hey Marie.
They both answered the phone at the same time.
Not you wanna be like me.
Layla said, making Kacey laugh.
What's the word bird?
Kacey asked.
What if I told y'all I knew someone who is being investigated for rape and I knew him for a long time so I don't feel he would do something like that-
Damn Marie breathe girl you ain't got no commas, no periods, question marks, just nothing breathe love.
Kacey said making Marie laugh, she was starting to wind down from the news. It could just be ridiculous, and a prank? She was kidding herself that investigation isn't a prank.
Okay, so this guy I'm close to is being accused of raping little girls. I don't think he's capable of it. Yet, there's something in the back of my mind just wondering. What if?
I explain.
If you gotta wonder what if the guy may be guilty Marie.
Layla replied in a sympathetic voice.
It ain't nun to cut that nigga off.
Kacey replied. Nah but she right sis, just play yo part and find out the truth for yourself. Don't get yourself hurt doing it just pay attention mamas.
Yeah?
I ask.
Yeah boo, sometimes you can never know, and you don't wanna assume too fast you may fuck some shit up doing that. So now that something has been brought to your attention watch for it.
Kacey reassured me.
What if I tell you, it's Corey?
I replied nervously.
Well, I wouldn't be surprised he started fucking you when we were all 16, he was like 28.
Layla nonchalantly replies.
Oh, shit she right, I forget about that.
Kacey says in a matter-of-fact tone. They were right, that was one red flag. Alright babies I gotta go, I'll call you later to check on you Marie, that doesn't make him a rapist maybe he really loved you. Just watch Marie.
Kacey said before her line clicked.
I say work with the detective secretly, help him close in on Corey and let him get all your evidence. If he can't prove anything let it go, if he can you found your problem. Love you boo, I'll call you in the AM.
Layla says before her end clicks. I sat my phone back down on the countertop before I ran my fingers through my hair.
First clue, he and I started dating when I was 16. I picked my phone back up and raced back to the living room. I plopped down on my couch and pulled the dial pad up on my phone. I picked his business card up off the table and dialed his personal number. I hit call and placed phone up to my ear, Agent Bankroll.
He answered.
I'm sorry, is this Justin Cole?
I'm sorry I thought you were one of my athletes, that's their nickname for me. How can I help you, Mrs. Johnson?
He asked.
I won't tell Corey about the investigation; I do have something to tell you that may be of help. One condition.
What's that?
he asked curiously.
I am in on this investigation; I need to know any and everything as soon as you find out or the deal is off.
I can do it discreetly.
He replied.
Corey and I started dating when I was 16, he was 28.
Really?
he asked, shocked.
Yeah, if that helps any-
That helps a lot Mrs. Johnson, listen this could get dangerous. So always remain safe and if you even get so much as a bad feeling you text me and let me know. I'll come and stay close by.
He expressed it like he was really concerned for my safety; Corey couldn't be this bad.
Okay, talk to you later Agent Bankroll.
I joked and he chuckled before I hung the phone up. I placed my phone next to me on the couch. I pray to God this isn't the man I married, I hope he isn't out here raping and murdering little girls. I then started to wonder, well what if he's doing something to a little girl right now? That wasn't sitting right on my stomach. How was I going to tolerate my impulses to want to ask? Just to see if he would lie. I knew within myself he would lie rather he was really doing it or not. Who would admit that to their wife they claim they want a daughter with? I admit my trust was shaken, but I had to find out for myself. I can't let an accusation like this go ignored. So, I just wait.
Hours, I waited up for him. What could he be doing to keep him out this late? I wasn't out there, so why was he? He supposed to go to work hang with some friends till about 1 or 2 in the morning and come home to me, why was it 4 AM and he hadn't even so much as called me? As I reached down to pick my phone up from next to me the door opened. I looked over at Corey immediately observing. He looked untouched.
What took you all night? You got time for 2 hours of sleep a shower and straight back out to work.
I explain.
I lost track of time with the guys; you know how we get when we gamble baby.
He answered kissing my cheek, for some reason I cringed. I didn't know who I was at this point anymore, my judgement was not that clouded. I couldn't have wanted an older man this bad, and I didn't even know what or who he was. Let me stop because I'll be upset at myself if he's innocent and I was secretly accusing him.
I followed behind him closely up the stairs of our nice sized house. We didn't live poorly, but we were somewhere between the middle class and rich. We lived more than a comfortable lifestyle, but we also budgeted and saved. As I followed him into the bedroom, he and I shared I turned the TV on. I purposely changed to the news and turned it up.
15 years old Kenzie found raped and murdered on Burnett and Madison looks as though the Chi-Town rapist has struck again.
As the reporter goes on, and pictures of her body are displayed, I watch my husband out the corner of my eye. He discreetly bit his bottom lip as if the things he were seeing really turned him on. Maybe I was just tripping? He could just have crusty lips and could be trying to bite the skin from them. Maybe not? At this point I was stuck.
I'm going to hop in the shower babe.
He explains and I just nod. I exited the room, going back down into the living room. I sat back on the couch, I picked my phone up, unlocking my phone opening a new message thread with Agent Cole.
I think he got turned on watching the news, some little girl named Kenzie was on the news tonight. (4:22 AM)
Myra’s Work Cell: Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, make sure you text me things as you see them so we can keep it documented and try to get pictures if you can. (4:23 AM)
I made sure to disguise his number under my sister’s name, so Corey wouldn't get any bright ideas. I kept my phone in my grip and went back upstairs into my bedroom, as I climbed into my bed it didn't feel the same. I felt like a stranger in my own house, or a stranger in my own bed. Or it was the fact that I could be living with a stranger. I looked at Corey as he came from the bathroom, boxers, and a t-shirt on he climbed next to me. As he wrapped his arms around me soon drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but think to myself: was there a Stranger in My Bed?
Chapter 3
Justin Maurice Cole:
I picked my phone up from the cup holder. I went to a certain contact hitting the call symbol next to her name. Hello?
She answered after the second ring. I was sitting outside the next crime scene I had to check out.
Hey Sasha, I found the wife. She’s adamant about it not being him. How do you know it’s this guy specifically?
Mayor Daniel Jones is one of his regulars, and he buys property from a business partner of mine by the name of Lucky.
Lucky is another case we’re working on over here, h-how-
That’s none of your business. Find out what I need you to find out, send me the information.
Well, I think I got the wife to be on my side. I gotta get her to file for divorce anything she tells me is hearsay or protected by spousal privilege.
Or you ‘found’ evidence while serving them a search warrant. Get her to lie for you sounds like yall like each other anyways. Oh, and Justin?
Yeah Sash?
Make sure he rot in prison. I want him to suffer I got plans for him when he gets there.
I will and thank you for helping my sister.
No need to thank me. Once you finish this the debt is repaid and you won’t hear from me again. We don’t talk again until everything is done and cooled off.
She’d replied before she hung up the phone. I got out of the car fixing my tie before I entered the crime scene.
5th victim this week.
I say following crime scene unit into the house.
It looks like the victim knew the suspect again, no signs of forced entry, parents are out of town on vacation. Looks like things started to get rough in her bedroom.
She explains, I nodded. I looked around the living room we were standing in. I didn't move too fast when investigating Mr. Johnson, he was a smart man, but smart men make mistakes all the time, I just needed him to slip up and if he has, I have to find it. I didn't want to give him time to fix it. I pulled on my glove and sat on the couch. I picked the remote up and turned the TV on.
A blue DVD screen popped on; I pressed play
