Introduction
You are a very intelligent girl, who has decided to emerge as an extremely knowledgeable, talented, smart young woman! How can someone make the statement that you’re an intelligent young girl without knowing who you are? It is quite simple. You’re here reading a book about directing your own life. You’re seeking out the tools necessary to help you design your own future.
Picture a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. That’s YOU! Usually, the image of a butterfly is put in books to illustrate that a girl is changing. Can you affect how you’re changing? Can you draw a plan for your future like an architect does for a building? Perhaps you can’t design your future that way, but you certainly can direct your own future.
Picture this—It’s like you’re on a movie set, sitting in one of those high, black canvas chairs that folds up and has Director
written in bright yellow on the back. Just so you know, your feet can’t reach the floor, but most people’s feet don’t. (Maybe the director’s chair is designed that way to keep the person in the chair humble.) As the Director of your own unique life, you make all the major decisions about what you want to have in it. Perhaps you already have a vision of what you think your life should look like in your future, or maybe you don’t have a clue. Maybe right now you don’t even care what your future holds, and that’s okay, too.
Is there a particular script you must follow? Who will be the stars in your epic life adventure? You’ll be the lead, of course! Will you be directing a drama, a comedy, or an entertaining saga that’s a mix of everything? When you begin to think about these types of questions, it means you’re taking your future seriously, and you’re trying to make a plan for your success. Basically, you’re writing your life script as you go along. But like any other great work, it helps to have some idea of where you’re going, and how to get there. At the very least, an outline would help you direct the script of your life.
Here’s the problem—no one can know their own future—not even you! However, having said that, it shouldn’t mean you can’t take some basic steps now to help ensure your success later on—and to try to make sure any setbacks that might come your way aren’t serious enough to knock you off course. It’s worth noting at this point that setbacks
aren’t failures.
From here on in, failure is a word that no longer exists in your vocabulary! Every setback
is a learning experience that moves you forward. More on that later . . .
For now, buckle up, and get ready for the ride
of your life!
Chapter one
The Challenge
Life has been compared to many things—a journey, a twisting, churning river, and a winding path are some of the ways people have described what a person’s life can be like as it moves forward. A famous writer called Charles Warner who lived over a hundred years ago once said, Simplicity is making the journey of this life with just baggage enough.
¹ He meant that when you’re packing for the journey of life, it’s best to pack only the things you’ll really need—just like when you pack to go on vacation and you’re only allowed one small bag! But packing for this big journey called life can be quite a challenge because you’re not packing clothes, your iPhone, or beach stuff. You’re packing what makes you YOU—your thoughts and feelings, the things you do well. Also, your hopes, dreams, and ambitions— and maybe most importantly, your passions. Add a pocketful of determination too, to set you on the right path and keep you going. The rest . . . well, you can leave it behind. It likely will serve no purpose on your journey.
So now, you need to ask yourself some questions about where you want to
