DISCOVERING THE REAL YOU
WHAT THIS BOOK CAN DO FOR YOU
In quiet moments, do you ever feel that you could be a happier and a more successful person? Not necessarily successful in the way that means headlines about you in the newspapers, but definitely more successful in your work and play, and happier with the people around you.
There are possibilities, in almost everyone, of a richer, fuller and more vital life. It is highly probable that you, too, can learn to think more clearly, grow more industrious and more talented, get on better with other people, and become generally a more complete, a more happy and successful man or woman.
These are the main qualities necessary to success and happiness. You have them within you, and if you wish, you can develop them.
If this were easy, there would be a lot more happy successful people in the world today. The truth is that it is by no means a simple task, to live a full and happy life-though most of us realise that this is what we should do.
With the body, mind and spirit with which you have been equipped, you should create the richest, fullest and most balanced life you possibly can. It is as if you were an artist and you had been given certain materials and opportunities with which to paint the best picture or carve the best statue or write the finest book within your power.
Success comes if you keep using everything good you have in body, mind and spirit to achieve good results. Happiness comes as the result of continually striving to develop and use the qualities of your personality to this end.
Quite naturally there is only one person in the whole world who can do this for you. Yes, yourself. But this Plan, which you are starting upon in this first book, shows you exactly how to go about it.
Where do you begin? For a start you have to know the material available for you to use. You have to know yourself. That, in brief, is what this first Book sets out to help you to do. The surprising thing is that you will probably find there is a lot more valuable material within yourself than you ever before realised!
1. YOUR IDEA OF YOURSELF
We each have a different idea of what success and happiness means for us, but we are together in wanting to make the best of ourselves and get the best out of life.
What can we do about it? The first thing we have to decide is whether life is a venture in the dark, controlled entirely by chance or whether we can make up our minds to go in the direction we want.
It is true that there are a great many problems and difficulties in life over which we have no control. But it is one of the basic ideas of this book that a great many of the problems for which some people blame circumstances are actually the result of ignorance and can be avoided or overcome fwe have the knowledge.
Chance helps or hinders all of us at times, and to that extent we are in the dark. But like the explorer who follows the Pole Star, we too can have an aim in view and keep travelling in the right direction however dark it may get.
Perhaps you are asking yourself at this point: Have I an aim in life? What exactly is it?
You undoubtedly have one of some kind; everybody has. Let us see how it can be recognised and made more definite and useful.
We each have some mental picture of what we hope to be one day; most of us think of this as the time when we shall be really successful and happy at last.
The more vividly you see your picture, the more likely you are to be actually living it one day. If the desire is strong enough to enable you to give up some of your present passing pleasures, your life will move irresistibly in the direction of its fulfilment.
There is no doubt about this, and truly it is an encouraging mental fact: We tend to become what we wish to be.
We must be certain, however, that our mental picture of the future is painted with the right kind of paint and this we can readily find out.
PRACTICAL PLAN-OR ‘FAIRY STORY’?
Your picture of the future must be sketched in practical colours-not in brilliant rainbow tints that are unlike everyday life. Your picture must be a logical development of the one which you and your behaviour presents to the world today.
Rainbow-tinted pictures of the future are to be guarded against because they are childish fantasies, which serve no purpose in the adult world. Almost all of us had them when we were children. It is important not to cling to them when we grow up.
Girls of eighteen or more sometimes cherish the fantastic idea of becoming a second Madonna when I am discovered
, boys sometimes think of themselves as a Tom Cruise only waiting for a chance
.
That is the kind of mental picture which is practically useless unless it can be brought nearer to reality. While most of us have had these marvellous notions at some period, if we are sensible we have changed our aim to one that can be achieved by work and does not need any fairy godmother with a magic wand to make it come true.
TEST YOUR AIM IN LIFE
Have you ever thought whether your aim in life is a practical
