DTHTF: Introduction to Mastering Self-Control
A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
— Anonymous
Do you struggle with your compulsions? Are you constantly looking for ways to satisfy your ‘self’ but you’re losing the battle? Would you like to be the master of your emotions, instead of a slave to them?
If so, DTHTF: Master Self Control will teach you the specific strategies you need to take you from an impulsive addict to a master of self-control.
This book is written to provide you with powerful techniques to teach you specific strategies for overcoming instant gratification. You will be able to identify the triggers that trap you in the pattern of self-sabotage, and to implement the laws of self-control so you can make better decisions about how to govern your habits that influences behavior.
What does it mean to have self-control?
It is the ability to manage yourself effectively by taking charge of the core areas in your life through conscious decisions followed by the right actions.
What are the right actions?
Those actions where we are doing something that is good for our self-confidence and esteem. The wrong actions would be those choices made in the moment without consideration towards the negative outcome that comes later.
We have all been there. It could be a string of bad habits that you persist in, or an addiction that is in control of your emotions. When we lose the ability to stop a particular activity, especially when it is bad for us, we are mired deep in a compulsive addictive behavior.
A good friend of mine—who struggled for years with immediate gratification and self-sabotaging actions—said, When you lose the fight to control your own impulses, and you’re holding on by your fingertips waiting for the obsession to pass, you are biting the bullet every time.
You wind up living a life of precarious existence without any real plan.
The purpose of this book is to share with you the key principles that drive self-control. But I want to make one thing clear. It is not that you are weak or lack willpower. Although willpower has a lot to do with it, willpower alone will not be enough to help you succeed. Willpower is a very powerful influencer in our daily lives. But, you need to back it up with the right strategies to squeeze the most out of it.
Self-control begins with having a clear focus for what it is you want to achieve, and who you want to become in the process. You must be totally honest with yourself and be ready to focus on the areas of your life that you lack all control. Also, it’s imperative to make a clear distinction between the things you want to control, but actually can’t. These can be outside influences that have nothing to do with you. Or a situational problem that you didn’t create but have been pulled into.
The goal is to gain greater self-control over your mind and your environment, and then, scaling up to higher levels of mastery by focusing on what you can directly influence with intentional action.
One of the greatest challenges with this is not trying to control situations or people that extends beyond our circle of influence. As soon as you try to seize control of something that you can’t change, this opens up the door for frustration, confusion, self-doubt and chaos. We can only change what we can influence and nothing more.
Now, here are a list of the most common traits that people who struggle with self-control encounter:
• Decision-making
• Overeating
• Addictions
• Lack of Self-discipline
• Low Self-esteem
• Getting stuck
• Confusion
• Lack of clarity on the future
• Feelings of anxiety
What it comes down to is choices. You can have whatever you want if you are willing to make the better choices for it. And, to take it a step further, you recognize the rewards—and consequences—of your immediate impulses versus well-trained choices.
Now, I know what it is like to be stuck in your life, and to feel like you are going no place. And, if you suffer from compulsive impulsiveness, the struggle to get to where you want to be is like trying to drive forward with your car stuck in reverse.
But life doesn’t have to be an uphill battle. At least, not every day. There will be days when it is brutal and a real slog just to get through. Days like this can be out of your control, but what this book teaches you is, control what you can with influence, and let the rest go.
If you are caught in a web of anxiety and live in constant fear of the compulsions that drive your mind, the framework in this book is structured to teach you specific strategies for defeating your mind’s habit of giving into temptation and instant gratification.
Before we begin, there are a few things we need cover...
Rules of the Game
1. The ability to self-control your will is an internal job. It is easy to blame our surrounding environment, people and circumstances on our inability to control ourselves. In a world full of too much stuff, offers everywhere, and the easy access to anything we want a lack of self-control has never been easier. But you don’t have to buy into any of it. In this book, I’ll show you how to be the master of your emotions, decisions and control your impulses so that you aren’t reacting to everything.
2. You are responsible for your own life...always. We have been so conditioned to react to our environment, that we have forgotten we really do have complete control over our choices, responses and emotions.
Doesn’t it feel like something is pulling you to react out of a desire to want something? Well, you don’t
