    Introduction

The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg; and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities. ―James Allen

For centuries, human beings have been fascinated with the concept of longevity, life expectancy, and for some, the concept of eternal youth. As a theme, ageing, or the concept of ageing, has been prevalent since the dawn of the biblical age and is continually played upon in the arts, literature, and popular lore. Life after death, a long life, and the essence of youth have been some of the central elements in almost all religious tales since Ancient Egypt and the time of the Vikings. And, if we are to believe the Christian biblical texts of the Old Testament, people lived to several hundred years of age. How we conceive of and measure time may be different than it was millennia ago, but we are still fascinated with age. If we trace back popular Hollywood films such as Highlander (1986), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and The 6th Day (2000), we find their roots in mediaeval art and popular myth, such as Fountain of Youth.

The prospect of slowing down the body’s ageing processes is not as far-fetched as one might believe; and, chances are that you are reading this book for the very knowledge that is being debated. While it is true that biological science plays a significant role in longevity, mindset is an oft-neglected aspect of the ageing process. In a society that places so much emphasis on living life to the fullest, taking risks, and living under enormous stress, the mind often dictates how fast the body ages.

Human biology does eventually limit the body’s ability to carry on, but that is not to say that longevity is not possible. The issue, it would seem, is that people in our developed world have become so focused on living longer, that we ignore the rich knowledge passed on to us from centuries ago. The Hunza tribe in the Himalayas, for example, live a very isolated life with little to no modern medicine, yet they experience a life expectancy of over 100 years. While modern medicine and medical advances over the past century have undoubtedly reduced childhood and maternal mortality, we must rekindle our familiarity with ancient wisdom if we are to thrive—body and mind—in the modern age.

    Mindset and Longevity

And herein lies the true question. Because our longevity focus is almost entirely on advancing age, we hardly ever ponder the quality of life of people who remain happy, unencumbered by stress, active, and healthy in both body and mind. That is why I decided to dive deeper into people groups such as the Hunza, Okinawan, and Sardinian, who live such vastly different lifestyles than us, and all enjoy fundamentally longer lives. I wanted to answer the question of why they live healthier and happier lives. The answers may surprise you, but after researching my understanding is that the natural way of life still trumps scientific intervention. Science is important and will always have a prominent place in our culture, but while science concentrates on living forever, nature focuses on living a happy and fulfilled life.

With all of this in mind, I began my journey to discover how mindset affects one’s ability to live a long life, and ultimately, how mindset affects the ways in which a person lives their life on a daily basis. At its core, The Natural Way to Longevity is a mindset training book. There is no real secret to longevity. Ironically, this most sought-after trait is a rich legacy of facts and practices to living a happy, healthy, and longer life.

    Mindset Is Everything

Your mindset is everything when it comes to achieving happiness, success, and fulfilment in life. Ultimately, that is our goal as humans. You can never be successful if you are not happy, and the key to achieving your best life will always come down to your mindset.

The concept of success in life differs from person to person, and as such, is incredibly subjective in its nature. Regardless, most people do seek success in some way, shape or form, even if their perception of success is different from each other. For the purposes of this
