Chapter One
Sweetie Pie
Before we begin this incredible story, allow me to explain the purpose of this book. Well, not so much explain it, this is more about letting you, the reader, in on a really big secret that I would hope you don’t go spreading around. This is all about cats and I’m a cat, so I know.
To further the explanation, my name is Sweetie Pie Brown. My brother, my twin litter-brother, only eleven minutes older than I—which is a big deal to cats—is named Big Boy. He and I have never been apart since we were born. I have never spent a moment of my life without him. We were even adopted together, luckily by a very nice family of humans who live in a very nice home and have a great love and respect for cats. They’re my kind of people.
My brother, Big Boy, and I are both pure white Siamese cats. I do realize that pure-bred Siamese cats are not pure white in color. I said we are pure white, not pure-bred. They, the pure-bred, have dark masks and paws. So what? Big Boy and I are Siamese, even if they don’t please … (with a thank you to Si and Am from Lady and the Tramp).
I am not able to describe the exterior—the outside—of our home in the suburbs of Chicago because my brother and I have never been allowed to go outside for our own safety. Our owners are right. Many dangers lurk outdoors: wild critters like raccoons and foxes, cat-nappers, careless drivers, and on and on. Big Boy and I both know that we are well loved and protected and we are both aware of, and thankful for, that.
It does, however, come at a price. We have become Inside Cats, and for all Inside Cats, along with the free food and the welcome warmth and security, comes a somewhat-boring existence totally lacking in exciting adventures. The price we pay for free food is not being able to hunt for it, a basic need that is built deep into a cat’s—our—genetic being.
Most domestic cats are Inside Cats, and this book is dedicated to them. I hope they don’t get mad at me, but this is where I start telling the secret that we—all cats—have been keeping amongst ourselves. I think that it’s time for people to know what really goes on with cats so as to help them to understand a little more about us, to the benefit of both, so here goes.
If you’re a cat person, I’m certain that you have the impression that cats sleep a lot. Here’s the thing: When it looks like we are sleeping, when we are pretending to be sleeping. That is so that you will not bother us while we are engaged in our very most favorite pastime, which is imagining.
There are many reasons that we imagine so often. While using our imaginations, we are able do the things that we would be doing—things we wish we were still doing—were we still living in the wild like our ancestors. Things like energetically hunting for our own food and fiercely protecting our family and surroundings.
We are talking here about all cats, all felines. That’s where we come from and, deep down, that’s who we remain. It’s where we—all of us—would really like to be, because that’s who we really are … very deep down…DNA deep. So, we imagine.
And our imagination, our getting there, our being there, is almost immediate and automatic. Try this: If you crumble a wad of paper (the world’s cheapest cat toy) and throw it, every cat within hearing distance will immediately go after what they imagine to be the critter. That’s what the wad of paper represents to us, a mouse or, perhaps, a wounded bird. Then we toy with it and bat it around as we would in real life because, to us, imagination is actually superior to real life. Imagination, done right, is a conscious dream. It can be whatever the imaginer imagines it to be. We know. We’re cats. We imagine. We are really good at it.
So, there you have it, we’re not always sleeping. When you think you see us sleeping, most times we are really imagining. We love to Imagine. Cats love to
