    INTRODUCTION

Nonno Francesco Marchetti (Cecco) was born in 1923, in Ostia, a small coastal town in the outskirts of Rome, Italy. He spent his early years helping his parents with their small fishing business. He was the second of 5 siblings and the only male child. His father was a fisherman that took to the sea early every day and his mother was a seamstress and cared for the family. Both his parents loved to cook and each one had a go to dish; one that was the star of any given meal.

Cecco’s mother taught him how to move around the kitchen and to treat cooking as an art form. At home, he learned the secrets of traditional Italian cuisine. Before the war started, Cecco was forced to flee to America, leaving his family and everything behind. He worked hard to provide for himself and eventually started a family of his own.

Once he had settled down, his life was his family, work and fishing. He never wanted to be a fisherman, but was always drawn to water. In his two-tone green 57´ Chevy he kept a fishing rod and a toolbox with hooks and lines. On weekends, he would pack the family in the car with some food and go to the lake or river to cast a line or two.

Despite the distance and the passage of time, Cecco never forgot his roots, and the memories of the meals shared with his family and close friends
