Chapter 1: Validation
Lando takes Molly, his new wife, to the dealership to purchase a car for her birthday.
Lando and Molly dated for a year before jumping headfirst into marriage. He didn’t take his time before knowing that Molly would be his future. And just three months after marriage, he bought her a brand new Range Rover. That too, after buying her a $19,000 engagement ring.
Lando led with his wallet, a common mistake made by many underdeveloped men. It was his only way of getting women. He thought that as long as he was able to buy nice things for them, they’d stay with him. My God was he in for a surprise. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that a world of hurt was in store for young, immature Lando.
He genuinely believed his only worth to a woman was what he had in his pockets, and although in some cases this was true, there are some women who will only be attracted to you and be after you for your money; he swallowed this hook, line, and sinker, like it was the gospel, causing him to develop very low self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
The underlying, unspoken belief was that If I have no money, I’m completely worthless.
Instead of believing if I have no money, I can always work and get some.
This belief of worthlessness at the age of 26 was not only an unhealthy way to think about one’s self but would go on to bring about corresponding and matching scenarios in Lando’s life. This happens due to a metaphysical law known as the Law of Correspondence.
The world has no choice other than returning back to any person what he or she believes or feels to be true about themselves. This was Lando’s first real-world introduction to the female psyche. However, he didn’t know that marriage was a world apart from casual dating. It was about intertwining your entire life with your partner, unlike dating, which is a much lighter and more entertaining form of relationship. This law summed up states, How you treat yourself is how the world will treat you; how you see yourself is how society will see you. Your outward reality is a mirror that reflects what’s happening on your inside.
In essence, this law says you are the author, creator, and writer of your life’s script, in which other people are only acting out what you write about yourself.
Lando: So, you like it?
Molly: Are you kidding me? My husband just bought me a pearl white Range Rover with a decked-out cream interior. I love it!!!!!
Molly and Lando both enter the vehicle to feel the luxury, to inhale the fresh new car fragrance, unbeknownst to Lando, now a 26-year-old man.
There were three people in that car, Lando, Molly, and a nine-year-old boy seeking his mother’s validation, shadowing and whispering in the ear, Lando, does she love us? Does she love me? Ask her if we’re worthy, am I worthy? Ask her are you going to leave me? Ask her why she left me. Why would you leave me?
This self-doubting, self-loathing thoughts crescendo to the point of revealing themselves but camouflaged and masked in jokes and humor.
Lando: Who’s the man, who’s the man, am I worthy, yeah, yeah, tell me, who is worthy...
Molly: Ooh, Lando, you the man. You just bought me a Range Rover…You’re worthy without a doubt.
Lando is worthy.
While Molly jokingly fed and fueled Lando’s deeply insecure, fragile, and dysfunctional little boyish ego, there was a sudden knock on the window.
Dealer: So, you ready to sign the dotted line?
Lando: Molly, I’ll be right back, sit tight while I go finalize the purchase.
Lando walks with the dealer into his office.
As the dealer prepares to discuss financing and payment options, Lando reaches into his briefcase and removes three bank envelopes, each containing 20,000 dollars.
He drops them one by one on the dealer’s desk…
Lando: Twenty, forty, sixty…
The dealer’s face was in a state of shock.
Dealer: It’s rare that someone walks into my office with $60,000 in cash.
Lando: Well, what can I say? I’m Mr. Rare, one of a kind...
Lando was still unaware that there were three people in that office, the car dealer, and that nine-year-old unresolved, unsettled little boy now seeking a father’s approval and validation.
An unattended, unstable, and unheard nine-year-old boy’s subtle voice echoes in his head:
Is he proud of us? Is he proud of me? Your sleeve isn’t up
