Beatrice brought Tabitha her clothes every morning and every evening. She was Tabitha’s handmaid while she was at home. She was a short, fair skinned young lady of about twenty-two years old with yellow hair that she kept in two shoulder-length braids. She always dressed modestly when she worked around the estate, as that was expected of her. Her mustard-yellow peasant frock was the only dress she owned, and aside from her sleepwear it was the only outfit she was permitted. Unless of course she was assisting Tabitha.Beatrice found herself in the Baron’s employ through an advertisement to assist a young lady with her daily needs. When she saw Tabitha for the first time, she wondered how long she would be able to keep her composure (and her job).That first night when she interviewed with her father, the carriage ride from Linhaus took longer than expected due to the summer rain flooding the more direct roads up the hillside. By the time Beatrice arrived, the sun had just finished setting and the lanterns around the estate’s walls were the only illumination apart from the milky ribbon of the stars overhead. The Baron summoned his daughter down the stairs to meet her new handmaid. Her violet gown swooped weightlessly down with each footstep, and Beatrice could not help staring at the curves of her bodice. Her silver hair draped over her shoulders in curls that swirled around her high-cheekboned face. To see a young woman with such hair was unusual to Beatrice, and it made Tabitha seem irresistibly exotic.

Beatrice was introduced to her new mistress and Baron Coldbarrow encouraged his daughter to interview the new handmaid as briefly as possible.

Forgive me, ladies, I do not wish to keep you up all night with pleasantries I must insist you make yourselves acquainted before we tour the grounds. Baron Coldbarrow said.

The three of them stood in the foyer at the bottom of the steps. The rain had died down just before the carriage brought Beatrice to the front door. Tabitha couldn’t help but connect the arrival of the girl with the sunshine hair and the cessation of the storm.
