    Betsy stared out over the prairie and sighed. The wind blew her hair out of her face, lifting the strands from her bright, sweating skin. The sun beat down on her, and she wiped at her forehead with a sleeve.

    Hey, HEY.

    She jolted out of her reverie and frowned.

    What, papa? Betsy said coarsely and rolled her eyes.

    You ain't sweeping that porch!

    I am too!

    You ain't!

    Her father peaked out through the saloon doors and glared at her, glancing over her with a disgusted look on his face. Can't you work hard like your sister? Do I hafta slap some sense into your stupid goddamn head?

    Betsy winced. Her shoulder still ached from the last time he decided to slap some sense into her, and he had the good grace to use a cooking pan.

    No, papa, Betsy said. She fought the urge to stomp her feet and snarl at him, but she knew that would get her a beating quicker than anything.

    Quit staring off into the distance. There ain't nothing out there. He gestured vaguely at the grass that spread out in front of them like an ocean.

    Betsy had only seen the ocean a handful of times, before her parents had dragged her and her sister all the way out in the middle of nowhere.
