Chapter One
The splash caught Minnie’s attention first. Something small had fallen into the river, and she surged to grab it before it fell into the murk at the bottom. When her fingers wrapped around cool metal, she swallowed in anticipation. Was this going to be her first Fiesta medal of the season?
She held her newest find toward a sunny spot in the water. It was shaped to look like a river barge with a tiny ring at the top. The ring confirmed it, it was a medal, that was where a ribbon was supposed to attach. Minnie turned the medal over and felt an engraving on the back: Jenna Gabriel.
Pretty name, but Minnie had never heard of her. Usually mermaids didn’t keep up with the news from the city of San Antonio, but Minnie tried to keep track of what happened during Fiesta. What had begun as a celebration of the battle for Texas’s independence had become a month-long party and fundraising marathon. The medals were a
