TEA FOR TWO?

You can see them, can’t you? You can see ghosts.’

Sarah jumped at the sudden interruption and looked up from her book. A minute ago, the only other seat at her table in Turner’s Tea Shoppe had been empty. Now another woman was sitting there. She looked to be in late middle-age, though her heavily powdered face made telling her age difficult.

Her clothes were decidedly old-fashioned, even for someone a lot older than Sarah was guessing, and her hair was extraordinary – a mad, grey-streaked cloud around her head, as if she had been blown into the shop by some terrific wind. Though a glance through the windows confirmed it was perfectly calm outdoors.

However, her eyes shone with a lively enthusiasm and she positively beamed from across the table.

‘I said, you can see ghosts, can’t you?’ She tapped her nose and chuckled. ‘I can tell.’
