The curse of the Beast was supposed to end with this generation. That was the vow my brother and I had made as soon as we were old enough to know what this affliction was--and how much it had already cost our family.

But recently, I got word that Edward had married. Some pretty village girl had caught his eye.

Not long afterward, he had demanded that I return home. I had managed to hold out for a few months, but now I was here. Back on the ancestral estate. Smithson, the old butler showed me into the library and I paced among the shelves, wondering what my brother wanted to say.
