The ‘heat run’ is a tradition nearly as old as my kind, a distant link to the days when we were much more closely related to true wolves. I could still taste his blood in my mouth as I crawled home. Most of my injuries from the night had healed, so there was no real reason for me to stagger about on all fours, but I had another reason for having trouble walking.
