PROLOGUE
Are you engaged at work ? If not, don’t worry according to a recent study 87 percent of people worldwide report not feeling engaged on the job. Many of us don’t expect work to be something we enjoy; it’s called work for a reason, right? We feel it is normal to check out
during the day and head home without feeling fulfilled or accomplished.
That means that the vast majority of us are either feeling disengaged or actively disengaged. What's worse, disengagement is not just bad for us, it's bad for business. Studies have shown that disengaged employees are more likely to make mistakes, less likely to be creative which translates to less productivity, and more likely to leave their jobs.
Engagement at work is a kind of authentic vitality or contented immersion in work that enables progress and growth. Studies suggest that it has four main aspects: having a sense of autonomy; making regular, meaningful progress; readily feeling positive emotions; and experiencing flow—that is, periods when you are so deeply absorbed in what you’re doing that you lose track of time.
How would you like to boost your productivity and engagement at work and in life? You might think that productivity is all about getting more things done in less time, but that's only part of the story. Productivity is also about getting the right things done, in the right way, at the right time. And that's what this book will teach you.
You'll discover the science behind productivity, such as why multitasking is bad for your brain, how to overcome digital distractions and to focus, and how to use strategic procrastination to fuel your creativity. Did you know that procrastination has its roots in our evolutionary development? You'll learn more fascinating facts like this in this book. We will explore the science behind procrastination and it's relationship with productivity. You'll also learn the science of engagement, such as how to find meaning and purpose in your work, how to tap into your strengths and passions, and how to create a positive and supportive environment. You'll find practical tips and tools to help you apply these insights to your own situation.
This book is based on sound research from experts in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and management. It's not just a collection of opinions or anecdotes. It's a guide to help you understand yourself better, work smarter, and live happier. So if you're ready to take your productivity and engagement to the next level, what are you waiting for? Let's get started!
CHAPTER 1
Productivity Paradox
A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention
Noble Prize laurate in Economics
Herbert Simon
Imagine having a powerful computer, a fast internet connection, and a smartphone that can do almost anything. You would think that with these tools, you would be able to accomplish more in less time, right? Wrong. This is the productivity paradox: the puzzling phenomenon of people becoming less productive despite having more technology at their disposal. The term productivity paradox
was coined by Robert Solow, a Nobel laureate in economics, who famously remarked in 1987, You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.
In 1993, Erik Brynjolfsson, a professor at MIT and a leading expert on digital business, wrote a paper with the same title, exploring the reasons behind this apparent contradiction. He argued that the lack of correlation between IT and output might be due to the limitations of how productivity is measured and tracked.
But there is more to the story than just
