    Naam - Swati Sandeep

    Prologue

Arnav Oberoi never cried. Life had never given him the luxury of tears. At a young age, he had been burdened with responsibilities. He never complained when his father walked away for another woman’s child. He did not complain when his young mother died, leaving behind two teenage sons. He embraced his brothers and raised them as his own. He did not complain when the woman he loved betrayed him and walked away. He accepted it as fate.

Life had never been particularly kind to him, but he had learned to find peace in its complexities. By the age of 31, he had become a prominent figure in the world of business, amassing great wealth and achieving a status as India's wealthiest man, rivaling even the global elite.

However, at that exact moment, standing outside the Intensive Care Unit, anxiously awaiting news of his father's condition, he felt like the most destitute person on the planet. Overwhelmed by fear, he yearned to weep, yet the tears refused to come.

A young woman gently held his hand and guided him to take a seat. Arnav gazed at his newly-wedded bride, who appeared absolutely resplendent in the vibrant red lehenga she was wearing. This was far from how he had envisioned their first night together. They had only just completed their marriage rituals when they received the distressing news of the accident, forcing them to make a hurried trip to the hospital.

He did not know what to say to her. Never had a woman ever surprised him, but he was very much surprised with Priyanka Goinka Oberoi. She offered silent support, respecting his need to brood. She did not crib about the hard hospital chairs, rather she chose to offer comfort to him and his family.

As he gazed upon her, a mixture of emotions swirled within him.He had entered into the union as a matter of business, expecting a marriage of convenience, devoid of any real connection. However, the woman before him defied his expectations. Her poise and the way she carried herself exuded a quiet strength that intrigued him. He had anticipated dealing with a spoiled princess, but he was pleasantly surprised to discover a warm and empathetic woman.

Priya gazed at her husband, noticing the stress lines that had etched themselves behind his eyes. He appeared drained, yet carried himself with a remarkable grace. Arnav Oberoi was undeniably attractive, but his looks were not what had initially drawn her to him. While the world often perceived him as a ruthless businessman, she saw the caring brother he truly was. He had single handedly raised two teenagers without a hint of complaint, always putting his family before himself. This selflessness was what endeared him to her. She knew he did not love her, but that did not worry her. Love could find its way in time. Their relationship was founded on mutual respect, and she believed they could build on that.

She looked at her husband's siblings who were seated at a distance. Ayushmaan had drifted off to sleep on Anirudh's shoulders. The sight tugged at her heartstrings. The boy had been only 12 when he lost his mother, he certainly did not deserve to lose his father as well. Though Shashank Oberoi was a stranger to all of them, he was still their father. For Ayushmaan's sake, she hoped the man would make it out safely.

The doctor's appearance snapped Priya out of her thoughts.

The doctor approached Arnav, who rose immediately, his fear evident in his eyes. Mr. Oberoi, you can see your father now. Please be aware that he doesn't have much time left, try not to agitate him. The doctor broke the news gently. For a minute Arnav could not breathe. Anirudh held his hand gently, understanding his pain. Shashank Oberoi was not worthy of being called a father, but Arnav loved him, and that was the only reason he had come to the hospital. He could not let Arnav suffer.

Arnav gathered his courage and entered the ICU. His father lay there, connected to a multitude of machines, appearing frail and lifeless. The once powerful Sushant Oberoi had diminished into this fragile figure. Arnav's eyes welled up with tears.

Despite his father’s betrayal he could never stop loving him. His father's actions had shattered their mother, and Arnav had steadfastly stood by her side. He had supported her decision to separate from her husband, remaining by her side until her final moments. Even after her passing, he had respected her wish to keep her children away from their father. Gazing upon his father in his current condition, Arnav could no longer feign indifference. For a decade he had suppressed his emotions, doing his duty as a son, but he could no longer hold himself back.

Mr. Oberoi opened his eyes with great effort. Relief washed over him as he saw his son. He had been waiting for him to come, praying that he would come. Arnav...

Dad, I'm right here. Please don't stress. His voice was filled with gentleness.

"I am sorry I missed the wedding, bacha (Son)" Shashank let out a tired sigh.

Arnav was surprised at the mention of his wedding. He had assumed that his father had not cared enough to come for his wedding.

Mr. Oberoi's voice was heavy with regret as he looked at his firstborn. He wished he had done something to reconcile. It was already too late for regrets. He knew he was dying. I was on my way to the wedding when the accident happened... He told him honestly.

Arnav's shock deepened as he listened to his father's words.

I am sorry, Arnav. I couldn't fulfill my responsibilities as a father. Please, forgive me, my son.

Dad, please, don't stress. Let's talk once you're better. His voice quivered as he held back tears.

I have very little time left, Arnav, and we both know it. Allow me to say what I must, my son.

Arnav remained silent, recognizing that there was no point in concealing the truth any longer.

After I'm gone, it will be your responsibility to manage my property and business, Arnav. I know you have the capability, which is why I've transferred everything into your name.

Arnav was taken aback by this unexpected decision of his father, finding it unfair to everyone involved.

Your brothers will certainly receive their rightful share, but only when you choose to grant it to them. I've entrusted everything to your discretion, I know that in my absence, you've taken care of Anirudh and Ayushmaan. What you've done, Arnav, I can never repay. I can only express my gratitude.

I've only fulfilled my duty, Dad.

Mr. Oberoi's tone was grave and solemn as he looked at his son with a last plea, I am burdening you with one more responsibility, my son.

Arnav looked at him, but he already knew what he would ask, and the very thought made him restless.

Mr. Oberoi tightened his grip on Arnav's hand and softly uttered, Aditya...

Arnav tried to withdraw his hands, but Mr. Oberoi held on as his breathing grew more labored, and his heart rate quickened. Arnav, sensing the urgency, pressed the emergency button, summoning the medical team.

A nurse urgently reported, Doctor, pulse rate is dropping.

The doctor swiftly moved to place the oxygen mask back over Mr. Oberoi's face, but he stopped the doctor. He knew his time was limited, and he couldn't bear to leave his youngest son alone.

Aditya is only a child, Arnav. Please take care of him; he's your brother. Please don't punish him for my mistakes, he gasped for breath, his words laced with desperation and remorse.

Arnav turned to the doctor, a desperate plea in his eyes. The doctor's solemn shake of the head conveyed a grim reality: there was nothing more they could do for his father.

Mr. Oberoi's voice, now fragile and strained, continued to call out, Arnav, please, Aditya... Aditya's responsibility... please, my son.

Arnav closed his eyes, grappling with a tumultuous surge of emotions—anger, anxiety, fear, guilt, and even hatred. However, his deep love for his father ultimately prevailed. He understood that the choice he was about to make would bring pain to his own family, but he felt compelled to do it. For the sake of his father's peace, he had to take responsibility for the one person he had resented the most.

Arnav... Aditya... Mr. Oberoi's attempts at coherent sentences faltered.

Arnav opened his eyes and forced the words out, From today, Aditya is my responsibility, Dad. I will take care of him. You have my word.

Mr. Oberoi gasped for breath, unable to form words, No Arnav... just give him love... embrace him...

But before he could finish, Mr. Oberoi's voice faded, as his heart failed him. The doctor closed his lifeless eyes and  called in the time of death.

Tears welled up in Arnav's eyes as he grappled with the weight of his decision. Fate had just taken a nasty turn, he would just have to ride out the wave.

    Chapter 1

Three days passed, and the persistent reporters refused to yield. They relentlessly sought a statement from Arnav. The rumor of an illegitimate Oberoi heir spread like wildfire. The recent merger of Oberoi Group and Goenka Industries only served to fan the flames.

Inside the mansion, the brothers were fighting a battle of their own. They were all unhappy with Arnav's decision, and they weren't shy about expressing their opinions. To make matters worse, the young boy was making things difficult. He was being rude and disrespectful to everyone and had made it clear that he didn't want to be part of the family.

Arnav had called for a family meeting because he needed to make a public statement. In the past few days, he had been busy with his father's funeral and sorting out some business issues. He had been avoiding this discussion for a while, but now it was time to face it.

In the hall, his brothers awaited him. The young boy sat apart from the rest. Priyanka, his wife,  entered with coffee for everyone. The husband and wife exchanged glances. Arnav felt guilty; It wasn't the warm welcome he had hoped to give his new bride. Instead of making her feel comfortable, they were burdening her with their problems. He wouldn't blame her if she decided to return home. However, to his surprise, she chose to stay with his family. Arnav had never loved her, but he respected her for her decision.

Priyanka glanced at the brothers and sighed. No one touched the coffee. They acted as if she didn't even exist. She was outnumbered in her new family. However, she knew how to make herself heard.

She  offered a sweet smile and addressed them,It's just coffee, not poison. You can all have some.

All four of them stared at her, their expressions a mix of surprise and irritation.

Aditya was the first to speak, his words sharp, Even the water in this house is poison for me. The boy clearly knew how to make a statement. At 15 he did not know the difference between disrespect and defiance.

Ayushmaan glared at Aditya. The boy’s attitude rubbed him the wrong way. Then who asked you to drink it? Starve if you want, but why create a scene?

Arnav let out a weary sigh. He could not blame Ayushmaan for his impulsiveness. He was a 19 year, hot blooded teenager. He did not expect him to act any better, but he hadn't intended to kick off the conversation with a fight.

Unfazed by their outbursts, Priyanka spoke calmly, If you don't want coffee, you don't have to drink it, but let's not fight. This is a home, not a battlefield.

Aditya, with a challenging tone, asked, Oh, and who are you to say that?

Arnav intervened sternly, She's my wife.

Aditya and Ayushmaan shared a mutual surprise. Aditya had never heard Arnav speak so assertively, and Ayushmaan rarely witnessed his brother adopting such a tone within the family. He understood the boundaries not to cross with his elder brother, and so, Ayushmaan decided to pick up his coffee and take a seat.

However, Aditya wasn't so easily swayed. He questioned with an attitude, So, she's your wife. Does it mean she can dedicate the law?

Arnav took a step forward, but Aditya quickly retreated two steps. Ignoring the provocation for the moment, Arnav calmly picked up his coffee. He knew he could address the boy's attitude later.

With everyone having voiced their opinions, only Anirudh remained in absolute silence. Arnav settled beside his younger brother. They were five years apart, and yet Anirudh respected him enough to not question his decision. He knew Anirudh would not say anything to upset him, but he would suffer in silence. The boy's outburst didn't worry Arnav, but Anirudh’'s silence did.

    You won't say anything, Anirudh?

Anirudh glanced at his brother. There were so many thoughts swirling in his mind, but he hesitated to speak and  upset Arnav. After all, his elder brother had practically taken on the role of a parent, guiding him and Ayushmaan through their tumultuous teenage years when their parents divorced. Without Arnav, their family might have crumbled.

Though Anirudh had his disagreements with Arnav, he couldn't bring himself to go against him. That's why he remained silent. But he also knew Arnav would not rest till he had spoken.

Anirudh sighed heavily and spoke, The decision is made, Bhaiya, why do we have to discuss it?

Ani, I know you may not agree with me, but it's alright to have a different opinion. We can talk it out and find a solution together.

Anirudh hesitated, then asked, If I were to tell you that I can't accept this boy in our home, would you consider sending him back?

Arnav's tensed, the boy was only 15. He could not toss him away, nor could he disregard Anirudh’s wishes. Do you want me to send him away?

Unable to hold back, Aditya interjected, Oh, please! I have no desire to stay here either. Send me to Shimla, and you all can have your peace, while I'll find mine.

Before anyone could respond, Priyanka stepped in assertively, Was Arnav Talking to you Aditya.

Her tone was so firm that it startled Aditya, and the others were equally taken aback.

Priyanka continued gently, You will get a chance to Voice out your opinion Aditya, we are all troubled, a little bit of patience will help us all. You are still a child Aditya.....

    I'm not a kid.

Oh really? Aditya, you're 15, legally a minor as per the Indian constitution. If you want to be treated like an adult, start acting like one. But if you continue to behave like a child, you will be treated as such.

Aditya scoffed, I'm a minor, and you're all taking advantage of that. I don't want to stay here, and you can't force me.

Arnav shook his head, the boy was getting a wrong idea. No one is forcing you, Aditya. He spoke firmly. I promised Dad that I would take care of you. If you want to stay with your relatives, that's fine. Just give me their contact details, and I'll handle the arrangements.

The mention of relatives sent a shiver down Aditya's spine. He had only one relative- his uncle. He dreaded the thought of living with him.

With a touch of rudeness, Aditya declared, I'll live alone.

That's not happening; you're too young to live on your own.

Who are you to decide that?

    Your legal guardian.

Hurt flashed in Aditya’s eyes, but he masked it quickly and yelled, I don't care.

Ayushmaan grabbed Aditya's collar, he had enough of his attitude, How dare you speak to Bhaiya like that? Have you forgotten you're in our house?

Priya gasped at his behavior. Let him go, Ayu.

Ayushmaan was too overwhelmed with anger to listen. Both he and Aditya were at  the brink of throwing punches at each other when Arnav intervened, physically separating them. He firmly ordered Ayushmaan to back down.

Aditya, still seething with anger, warned, If you touch me again, I'll break your face, got it?

Ayushmaan, his own temper flaring, was about to retaliate when Arnav intervened once more, firmly restraining him.

That's enough! Go to your rooms and cool off, Arnav commanded with stern authority.

I won’t go? What will you do?

Arnav fixed a stern gaze on Ayushmaan, who was torn between his anger and respect for his elder brother. Respect won in the end and he reluctantly complied and walked away, leaving Aditya surprised by his compliance. He did not understand why Ayshmaan obeyed Arnav so readily.

Arnav turned to Aditya, Aditya, understand this clearly: in our home, we don't tolerate any disrespect. As long as you don't cross the line, no one will treat you disrespectfully. Don't think you can challenge me. Now, go to your room and get control of your temper. When you're ready to talk like an adult, we can have a conversation.

Aditya did not budge. Arnav looked at the defiant teen. He could tolerate a lot of things, disrespect was not one of them. If the boy had to live with them he needed to learn their ways.

He looked him in the eye and spoke firmly, Go to your room, Aditya, Aditya flinched. Arnav had not raised his voice, but it was so firm that it made him shiver.  He wanted to resist, but the words seemed stuck in his throat. In a fit of anger, he turned and walked away.

Anirudh followed suit, leaving Arnav alone in the room. He sat down with a heavy sigh. The situation hadn't unfolded as he had hoped, and it weighed on him.

Priyanka, sat down beside him and held his hand gently.

Arnav leaned into her comforting embrace and voiced his regret, I'm sorry, Priya. I know you must be stressed. It's only been three days since our wedding, and you're dealing with so much. You don't have to get involved in all this. Why don't you go back to your family's home for a while? Catch a little break from this madness??

Arnav, this is my home  now, Priya spoke softly, and this is my family. Don't worry, things will sort themselves out. We'll face them together.

I had feared you might be upset. I know our wedding was a disappointment to you. We did not even welcome you properly. Give me some time, Priya. I promise to make it up to you and find a way to resolve everything. We can finish all the rituals.....

Rituals can wait, Arnav. Let us deal with the problems first. I've always known that your family holds the highest place in your heart. In fact, it's one of the things I admire most about you. I can be patient.

Thank you for being so understanding. He kissed her forehead gently. He really felt blessed to have her as his wife.

Priya gave him a warm smile and walked away. Arnav knew he had to address the Aditya predicament. He prayed that the boy would give him a chance. He Promised his dying father that he would take care of the boy, and he would! No matter what!

    Chapter 2

Priya looked at the wedding gifts and sighed. Too many people had showered them with love. At any other time she would have gone through the presents with excitement, she could not muster any at that time.

A servant entered, and informed her that someone had come to meet Aditya. The unexpected visit piqued her curiosity, especially since Arnav was away at the office. Setting aside the gifts, she made her way downstairs to greet the guests.

In the spacious hall, she found a middle-aged man seated, accompanied by another individual who exuded an official air. Both of them appeared somewhat out of place in the grand mansion. They stood up as they noticed her approach.

With her usual politeness, Priyanka inquired, How may I assist you gentlemen?

The middle-aged man locked his gaze onto Priyanka. His stare made her uncomfortable. What was he trying to achieve with such an intense look?

In a slurred tone, he finally spoke, Main Aditya ka maama hoon. (I am Aditya’s Uncle) The man's breath reeked of alcohol, and Priyanka instinctively took a step back, repulsed by his condition.

The other gentleman who accompanied him looked embarrassed by the man’s behavior. He spoke before the man could do more damage. Mrs. Oberoi, I am Ashok Sinha, an advocate. I will be representing Mr Arun Malhotra in court.

Priya gave him a confused look.

Mr Malhora is Aditya Oberoi's maternal uncle. Mr Sinha clarified,  As you may already know, Aditya is a minor, which is why Mr. Malhotra has applied for guardianship. He wishes to meet with their nephew. I hope you have no objections.

Priyanka couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that Mr. Malhotra's presence had brought. He gave off an unsettling vibe, and she was hesitant to let him near her family. Trying to buy some time, she responded, Arnav is not at home right now; he will be back from the office in the evening. It would be better if you all visit then.

Mr. Malhotra's irritation flared, mughe Aditya se milna hai, Arnav se nehi (I want to meet Aditya, not Arnav.)

You cannot meet Aditya in Arnav's absence. Please leave.

Stop Arguing Woman! Mr Malhotra yelled,  Go and call Aditya.

I've told you, you cannot meet him. Priya’s eyes reflected the disgust she felt for the man, Please leave right now.

Ignoring her request, Mr. Malhotra continued to call out for Aditya, his voice growing louder and more disruptive.

What are you doing, Mr.Malhotra? Priya glared at him,  If you don't leave immediately, I'll have to call security.

Go ahead, call security. I'd like to see who dares to throw me out.

He tried to barge upstairs, Priya blocked his way, Arun pushed Priya aside. She stumbled, but just in time, someone caught her and prevented her from falling. She looked up in surprise, finding Ayushmaan standing there, his eyes shooting daggers at Mr. Malhotra. He helped Priya regain her balance and gently held her hand.

aap theek ho Bhabhi, Bhabhi? (Are you alright, Bhabhi), Ayu’s voice was filled with concern.

Priya smiled, delighted that the boy had finally started calling her Bhabhi. It seemed that something positive was emerging from this difficult situation. I'm okay, she assured him. Ayushmaan released her hand and confronted Mr. Malhotra.

Ayu’s rage flared as he shouted, How dare you lay a hand on Bhabhi?

Priya grew worried, not wanting a violent altercation to erupt. Anirudh and Aditya rushed into the hall upon hearing the commotion.

Aditya froze in his tracks, his worst nightmare standing right before him. He couldn't believe his eyes. On the other hand, Anirudh was taken aback by the situation. He had never seen Ayu behave that way with strangers.

Anirudh quickly stepped in and pulled Ayushmaan back, What are you doing, Ayu? Who is this? And why are you yelling?

He misbehaved with Bhabhi, Ayu hissed and attempted to lunge at Mr. Malhotra once more, but Anirudh tightened his grip on the boy, his eyes blazing with fury. How dare the man touch his brother’s wife?  He turned his gaze to Priya, who looked visibly shaken.

Tum theek ho Priya? (Are you alright, Priya?)

Priya nodded her head, but that did not satisfy Anirudh. Who is he, and what does he want?

The lawyer explained, This is Arun Malhotra, Aditya Oberoi's maternal uncle. Whatever happened, it's just a misunderstanding. My client has only come to meet his ward. You can't legally deny him access to his ward.

Aditya, filled with fear, took another step back. He wanted nothing to do with the man standing in front of him. His father had once promised him that he'd never have to see that man again. His father had protected him then, but who would protect him now?

Anirudh was taken aback by the sudden turn of events. He couldn't comprehend what was happening. It was Arnav who took care of such details. He wished he was home to deal with the crisis. His gaze shifted to Aditya, who appeared visibly frightened.

Mr. Malhotra, having noticed Aditya, proceeded to approach him.

Aditya remained rooted in place, unable to muster the courage to move. Just as Mr. Malhotra was about to reach Aditya, Anirudh intervened, blocking the man's path. For some reason, he felt an overwhelming need to keep Mr. Malhotra away from Aditya.

Mr. Oberoi, you cannot legally prevent my client from visiting his ward. Mr. Sinha insisted, He is here to ensure the safety of his ward, so...

I can legally prevent your client from even entering this mansion, Advocate Sinha. Priya cut him off,  I can even have both of you arrested for trespassing on private property. I can also throw in an assault charge to spice things up. How would you like it to go?

The lawyer was taken aback; the woman was right on all counts. However, he attempted to regain the upper hand, "Look, Mrs. Oberoi, this is a matter for the court, you don't seem to understand. My client has some legal rights. You've kept his ward here without his permission. We are fully aware that Aditya doesn't want to stay here. We could file a kidnapping case if we wanted, but we are here to peacefully discuss this matter.

Anirudh texted Arnav immediately. The situation was going out of control. They needed Arnav to step in.

Priya knew the lawyer would not relent easily. She called out to Aditya, but he remained in his place, looking visibly frightened. No matter how much Aditya tried to put on a brave front, he was still just a kid. Priya let out a sigh and approached him.

She gently held his hand and spoke in a soothing tone, Aditya, do you want to meet your uncle? She understood that consent was crucial. If Aditya wanted to see that man, there was no way they could stop him.

Aditya looked at her in surprise. Why was she asking for his opinion? Do I have any choice in this?

Of course, you have a choice, Aditya. If you want to meet him, no one will stop you. You are free to decide.

Aditya whispered under his breath, What if I don't want to meet him?

Priya heard his question, but what puzzled her more was the fear in the boy's eyes. He looked genuinely terrified.

She gently squeezed his hands and spoke firmly, Aditya, look at me. Aditya looked up.

"Arnav made a promise that he will take care of you. You may not know him, but I do. Arnav never breaks a promise. He will protect you. You have no reason to be afraid. If you don't want to meet this person, all you have to do is say so. I will ensure that he never shows his face here again.

Are you sure? Legally, he is my guardian, right?

Arnav is your legal guardian. Until you personally state in court that you prefer to stay with your uncle, the court won't transfer guardianship. I can assure you of that.

Mr. Malhotra rudely interjected, "What are you teaching my nephew, woman? Mughse jyada haq kese ka nehi hai uspe. Tera pati uska sautela bhai hai. Upar se yeh Oberoi sahab ke najayaz aulad hai. Ee wakil, ise bata ke mujhe koi court me hara nehi sakta"  (No one has more right to the boy than me. Your husband is his Half brother, and on top of that, Aditya is Oberoi sahib's illegitimate offspring. Mr. Sinha, tell him that no one can defeat me in court.)

Ayushmaan attempted to intervene, but Priya stopped him by raising her palm. She knew men like Mr. Malhotra only understood one language. She could handle him just fine.

Oh, really, Mr. Malhotra? So, you know a lot about the law now? Then you must also know that the primary right to decide a minor's guardianship belongs to their father. Courts prioritize the father's decision.

Mr. Sinha, was taken aback, Do you have any legal proof of this?

Let's see what the court has to say about guardianship, Mr. Sinha. You'll find all the necessary proof there. Now, please leave. Don't make me call the cops. She emphasized her threat.

Mr. Malhotra was not willing to leave without a fight. Aditya, no one here really cares about you. Sooner or later, these people will kick you out of this house. What will you do then? You won't have any other place to go. Come with me now, I am your best chance.

Arnav rushed inside. He had come as soon as the security alerted him about the stranger wanting to meet Aditya. Everyone was relieved to see him.

    What's going on here?

Arnav looked at his wife. Aditya was holding onto her firmly, the fear in his eyes was clearly visible. Aditya's terrified expression confused him. What could have frightened him so much?

Priya quickly appraised him about the situation. Arnav's fists clenched in anger as he heard the details, but he didn't want to frighten Aditya further. He could have the man thrown out, but before taking any action, he needed to ask the boy something.

Aditya, Arnav spoke firmly. The boy looked at him with fear in his eyes. Where had the earlier defiance gone? Arnav sighed, he could handle a bratty teenager with indifference, but the vulnerable boy standing before him  tugged at his heartstrings. He gently held Aditya's hands and softened his tone, Do you want to go with that man?

Aditya vigorously shook his head, tears threatening to escape his eyes, but he was trying hard to hold them back. That was enough for Arnav.

He turned to Anirudh and when he spoke his voice was ice cold, Call security and have them escorted out.

Aditya was stunned. He didn't expect Arnav to respect his choice. He had assumed that Arnav would be eager to transfer his guardianship to his uncle.

The security team arrived. Arun tried to fight them but Mr. Sinha managed to persuade Mr. Malhotra to leave without causing a scene. Priya breathed a sigh of relief.

Once they had departed, Ayushmaan scoffed, "kal to bohot ud raha tha ke tughe yaha nehi rehna, aaj to tere paas mauka tha yaha se jane ka, phir kyun nehi gaya?" (Yesterday, you were adamant about leaving this place, and today, you had the chance. Why didn't you go?)

Aditya remained in a state of shock and didn't respond. He needed time to collect himself. Arnav saw his state and advised him to go and rest. Aditya looked at him with vacant eyes. Arnav sighed. The boy looked traumatized. He gently took Aditya's hand and guided him to his room. Aditya didn't resist as Arnav tucked him into bed; he just appeared lost. Arnav covered him with a blanket, turned off the lights, and left the room silently. Why did he feel so sad seeing the boy so broken?

Ayushmaan was pacing around the hall, in frustration. He just wanted to be rid of Aditya, and they had the perfect opportunity to send him away. Why hadn't Arnav taken it?

As soon as he saw his brother, Ayushmaan bombarded him with questions. Why did you do that, Bhaiya? Why didn't you send Aditya with his uncle? He doesn't want to stay with us, and I can't tolerate him either. Please, send him away.

Arnav shook his head sadly. His younger brother was too inexperienced to grasp the complexities of the situation. He took Ayushmaan's hand and gently guided him to sit down. Have you really looked at Aditya?

I don't want to look at him; I just want you to send him away from here.

Priya and Anirudh watched the exchange but let Arnav handle it.

Arnav patted Ayu’s hand gently and softened his voice Ayu, Aditya is terrified of that man. How could I send him with someone he fears so much? Even if he wanted to go, I wouldn't have allowed it.

That's his problem, not ours. Why would he be afraid of his uncle? He must be pulling another stunt, trying to bother us.

Priya could no longer stay silent. He isn't pretending, Ayushmaan. He is genuinely terrified of that man. It's a classic case of abuse. This revelation left Ayushmaan in shock.

Anirudh agreed, I'm starting to think the same way. We need to talk to Aditya and find out the reason behind his fears. One thing is clear: that man doesn't deserve to be anyone's guardian.

Priya shook her head sadly, I don't think Aditya will open up to us. Abuse is a difficult topic to discuss, and he doesn't trust us. We'll have to find another way to uncover the truth.

Arnav looked at his troubled wife, Do you think the court will grant Mr. Malhotra guardianship?

Aditya's illegitimacy is a significant issue. They could challenge Papa's will, arguing that he's Aditya's biological uncle, while you're his half-brother. Their lawyer will likely use this argument. The court's decision on guardianship will heavily rely on Aditya's statement, but things could get ugly in court. You should be prepared for the worst.

Arnav ran his hand through his hair frustrated, Isn't there any other way?

He must be pursuing guardianship for financial gain. Aditya’s guardian will have complete control over his property. That must be his motivation, but according to Papa's will, all properties are in your name. If we can somehow communicate this to Mr. Malhotra, I don't think he'd be interested in guardianship anymore. Maybe a financial settlement will help him rethink his decision.

Are you suggesting I buy him off?

I am asking you to settle things out of court. Custody battles can be especially hard on children. Aditya's illegitimacy will be brought up repeatedly, and that boy has already lost everything. Let him at least have his dignity.

Priya left for her room. Arnav had to get back to work, but his mind was preoccupied with what Priya had said. Anirudh gestured to Ayushmaan to leave, and he complied.

Priya is right, Bhaiya. If this goes to court, unnecessary issues will come up. We are already in the media’s eyes, we can't afford another scandal. Think about it. The decision will be yours, no matter what you decide, we will stand by you.

Arnav needed time to think. He didn't want to rush into any decisions. Grabbing his car keys, he left the house. Things were becoming complicated. Relationships were getting entangled, and the bitterness of the past was slowly fading away. Arnav wished he could set everything right, but he knew only time could heal some wounds. They would just have to weather the storm.

It was almost two in the morning. Arnav was busy working. He was working on an important tender and needed to finish it by the next day. Stifling a yawn he got up to make some coffee. He could not afford to sleep. He was walking past Aditya's room, when he heard faint whimpers. Startled, he pushed the door open and entered. Aditya was tossing in his bed, sobbing. It looked like he was caught in a nightmare.

Arnav hurried to his side and gently shook him awake. Aditya looked at him with terror filled eyes. His hair was disheveled, and he was drenched in sweat. When Arnav reached out to touch his face, Aditya screamed, No! and shielded himself as if bracing for a blow.

Arnav took a step back and reassured him gently, Relax, Aditya. It's just me.

Aditya slowly lowered his hand, embarrassed by his own reaction. He scoffed to maintain his facade of indifference,  What are you doing here?

Arnav, saw the mop of hair falling on his eyes, and gently pushed it away, You need a haircut, Aditya.

Aditya, slightly offended, retorted, I like my hair.

Arnav smiled, pleased to see that Aditya's sass was returning. "You still need a haircut, kid! Soja, kal baat karte hai" (Sleep, let's talk about it tomorrow)

Arnav was about to leave but he remembered that Aditya had not come for dinner. He looked around for the dinner plate they had sent to his room, only to find it untouched.

    You didn't eat?

Aditya glanced at the food tray. He was hungry, but he detested cold food. Plus, he didn't want to appear weak or needy in front of Arnav. He could take care of himself. So, with all the arrogance he could muster, he replied, I'll eat if I feel like it. I'm not a kid. You don't need to worry about me.

Arnav shook his head, the boy did not even realize that he could see through his act. His downcast eyes betrayed his true feelings easily. Skipping meals isn't allowed in this house. Get up and have your dinner.

    Aditya remained silent.

You don’t like the food? Aditya did not respond.

If you don't say anything, how will I understand, Aditya? Do you realize that you'll have to stay in this house with us for the next few years? How long will you keep starving yourself?

Aditya scoffed, I can cook for myself.

Arnav raised an eyebrow in amusement, Fine, then go ahead, cook and eat. I won't let you go to bed hungry.

When Aditya did not respond, Arnav grabbed his hand and led him to the kitchen. He showed him the pantry and said firmly, Now, cook.

Aditya was caught off guard. He didn't even know how to turn on the gas stove. He had just said that to annoy Arnav, not wanting to lose face. So, he decided to give it a try. Arnav closely observed his every move, not wanting the boy to hurt himself. For some unknown reason, he had a hunch that Aditya knew nothing about cooking, and the boy's actions only confirmed his suspicions.

Aditya was attempting to light the burner without turning it on. Arnav took the lighter from him and mocked, Great cooking skills Kid!

Aditya glared at him but Arnav did not take offense. He placed a saucepan on the stove, and took out pasta and began boiling it. He couldn't let the boy starve.

Reaching for the vegetables he enquired, What are you allergic to?

Aditya scoffed, Why do you care?
