    Chapter 1

    The life she knows.

14 years ago, Benjamin and Charlotte found themselves in a dire situation. Multiple IbelSoldiers were closing in on them, their dark energy in full display. The use of this element was strictly forbidden on their planet as it corrupted anyone who wielded it. Panic set in as Benjamin looked through the window, but he knew they had to get away or they would both die and their unborn child, Ruby, would never see the light of day.

Charlotte, though worried about going into labor, shared Benjamin's sentiment. How are we going to get out of here?! she asked, fear lacing her voice. Benjamin didn't know, but they couldn't stay there.

Suddenly, one of the IbelSoldiers kicked in the door, startling them. Benjamin didn't have his bow ready, so he had to use his fire powers without it, and shot a big flame out of his hand, pulverizing the IbelSoldier. Get out of here! Benjamin yelled at Charlotte.

Charlotte ran to the basement, moving boxes aside until she found a door. She had to use the six elements at it in the right order for it to unlock. A sharp pain hit her, but she focused on the task at hand.

Okay... first... we need fire, Charlotte said, closing her eyes and feeling her body getting warmer. She knew that to use a lot of fire, her body temperature would need to rise. Her normal body temperature was 99°F, but it quickly went up to 250°F as she exerted herself. She shot the fire at the door. When she opened her eyes, she saw that one of the locks had opened up.

All that I have to do now is cool off, Charlotte said, looking to her right where she saw a bucket of water. She put her hand in it, making the water stay around her hand. Walking over to the door, she put her hand on it, moving the water around the lock until it slowly opened.

Benjamin yelled, Are you almost done?!

Charlotte replied, I'm sorry, but I don't have much strength!

Benjamin pleaded, Please hurry up.... I can't hold them off much longer!

Charlotte became angry and used more power. After cooling down, she put her hand on the door, and her hand started freezing until it looked like the whole door was freezing. A few seconds later, she heard the lock open. Come on, Charlotte... you can do this, Charlotte said to herself. She hit the door, causing a big wind strike to come out of her fist, which unlocked one of the locks. She took a few steps backward and, right when she wanted to use lightning to open the next lock, she heard someone fall behind her.

I'm sorry Charlotte... they are too strong... Benjamin said.

Charlotte turned around and saw Benjamin lying on the ground, a pool of blood around him. NOOOO! Benjamin! Charlotte cried.

But then she heard someone say, You thought you could escape from us? You thought that this fool could hold us back? You're pathetic.

The person who had spoken earlier walked downstairs while continuing to talk. Your last moment has arrived. At least you two can die together, the IbelArmy member said.

Charlotte was crying. She looked over at Benjamin, and saw that he had died.

We can do this the easy way... or the hard way, the IbelArmy member said with a smile on his face.

The hard way, please, Charlotte said while she looked up.

The man from the IbelArmy angrily looked at her.  Fine, have it yo... Charlotte was just looking at him, but without realizing it, she started to shoot lightning everywhere. Then water started hitting everything. The IbelArmy member looked shocked, and more of their IbelSoldiers were standing on the stairs. They started to shoot a dark energy blast towards her, but Charlotte let the water flow right in front of her, and the blast hit the water, but it went through it.

The IbelArmy smiled for a second until a big lightning bolt hit the dark blast. The dark energy blast exploded, and everybody was shocked by this. The door only needed one more element, because of the lightning that had hit the door in the rage of Charlotte. The IbelArmy could just look through the dust, and immediately got hit by a big flame. They fell backward.

Now you are going to feel the pain that I have right now... Charlotte angrily said while she used her nature powers to open the door. Then she bent the whole ground and put her entire house under the ground.

But while she was doing this, she got hit by one last dark blast. She fell backward into the secret tunnel. But the whole house still fell down into a big sinkhole. The entrance of the tunnel was collapsed now, but at least the IbelArmy would never find her. While she was in a lot of pain, she ran through the tunnels. These were very dark, but she made a flame in her hand, so she could see where she was going.

After a long walk, she finally saw another door. Charlotte looked back and saw a long path of blood that all came from the last time she was hit by one of the IbelSoldiers. She knocked on the door, and nothing happened.

After knocking for a long time, the door finally opened. Are you alrig... oh my... what happened to you?! a woman said.

Charlotte was exhausted, and she said, Please mom, let me come inside, and then I'll tell you everything.

Her mother put an arm around her and brought her towards the couch. She quickly grabbed bandages and put them around the wounds. The baby is coming! Charlotte yelled while she was in a lot of pain.

Her mother couldn't believe it. What?! Couldn't it choose a better moment?! Charlotte gave her an angry look.

While the baby was coming, she told her mother about everything that had happened. Benjamin got killed... Charlotte said sadly. No! Charlotte! Her mother yelled, but she saw that Charlotte's hand fell and she didn't move anymore.

Her mother checked her heartbeat, but it was gone.

Her mother fell on her knees while holding Ruby, and she started crying.

Years later, And that's how it happened. Ruby's grandmother said, sadly.

Ruby was crying and asked, But why did they go after her? And why aren't they after me?

Her grandmother didn't want to tell her that, That's something I can't tell you yet, maybe I will tell you, eventually. She said.

Her grandmother stood up and walked towards the kitchen.

Ruby had a photo of her mother in her hand and she kept staring at it.

Ruby, can you please help me? Her grandfather asked.

Ruby stood up and saw a present lying on the kitchen counter.

This is for you, Ruby. Happy birthday. Her grandfather said.

Ruby ran towards her present and wiped her tears away.

    What is it? Ruby asked.

Open it. Her grandfather said with a grin on his face.

Ruby opened her present and found a jacket inside.

Wow, thank you! Ruby said, happily.

Normally, she would only get a chocolate bar or something, as her grandparents couldn't afford much else.

Well, this used to be your mother's. Her grandmother said.

Ruby was even happier now. This was one of the few things she had from her mother.

But why are you giving it to me? Ruby asked.

Her grandfather smiled and said, Because when your mother turned 14, just like you today, she got accepted into 'The Ark of Elements,' and this is her old jacket.

Ruby looked at the back of the jacket and saw a big logo of the Fire group, which looked like a big dragon. Wow, but what is 'The Ark of Elements' exactly? she asked.

Before her grandfather could respond, her grandmother chimed in, That's something for another day.

But why? Ruby asked, eager to learn more.

Her grandmother paused for a moment before responding, You need to help us with preparing the food.

Ruby felt a twinge of irritation, but she followed her grandmother into the kitchen. Her grandfather used his fire powers to turn the stove on, and Ruby couldn't help but feel envious.

When am I going to learn to use my powers? she asked, hoping for a different answer than the one she had heard before.

Her grandfather hesitated before responding, Well, when you are old enough...

Her grandmother cut him off, You can't learn them.

Ruby looked shocked, just like her grandfather. Screw you! she said in a sudden burst of anger.

Ruby, go to your room. Her grandmother said angrily.

Ruby obeyed her grandparents and ran up the stairs to her bedroom. As she laid down on her bed, she couldn't help but glance over at her desk and notice the pile of homework that still needed to be done. Despite her reluctance, she decided to get to work.

Meanwhile, downstairs, Ruby's grandparents were in the midst of a heated discussion. How can you tell her that she can never learn her powers? her grandfather asked, his tone laced with anger.

His wife, Ruby's grandmother, began to cry. Because I don't want her to end up like her mother, she explained through her tears.

Her grandfather sighed, understanding her concerns. Look, when she turns eighteen, she'll learn how to use her powers in school. That's the perfect timing.

You're right, his wife agreed, wiping away her tears. Maybe I'm going a little too far.

The grandfather chuckled. Not a little, but seriously, it's not like she's been accepted into The Ark of Elements. She didn't even know it existed. There's no way she could join.

His wife nodded. You're right, but I still feel guilty for holding her back.

    Why? asked the grandfather.

Because she'll never know how great her mother was, and she'll never get the chance to be as great as her, all because of me, his wife explained, wringing her hands.

Listen to me, the grandfather said, taking her hand in his. We use these powers for more than just fighting. They power this entire continent, and there are so many other applications for them. If she wants to get a job, she'll need to learn how to use her powers.

His wife smiled at him. Maybe you're right. We'll see what the future brings for her, the grandfather said, a smile on his face.

    Chapter 2

    They want me?

Ruby looked out of her window, watching the sun set over the fields. Her mind was still reeling from her outburst earlier that day. She couldn't believe the words that had come out of her mouth. She had never spoken to her grandmother like that before.

As she lay in bed, she couldn't help but think about what had caused her to react so strongly. She loved her grandmother, she really did. But lately, she had been feeling trapped. Stuck in this small town, on the farm, with no prospects for the future. She longed for something more, something exciting.

She wished she could be like her mother, who had left the farm and moved to the city when she was younger. Ruby couldn't help but envy her.

But as the night wore on, Ruby's anger began to subside. She started to feel guilty for the way she had treated her grandmother. She knew that her grandmother was just trying to help, and that she was doing the best she could.

The next morning, Ruby woke up early and decided to make amends. She got dressed and went down to the kitchen, where her grandmother was making breakfast.

Good morning, Grandma, Ruby said softly.

Good morning, Ruby, her grandmother replied with a smile.

I'm sorry for the way I acted yesterday, Ruby said, looking down at her feet. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

Her grandmother walked over to her and gave her a hug. It's okay, sweetheart, she said. I know you're going through a tough time. But you don't have to go through it alone. I'm here for you.

As the day went on, Ruby helped her grandmother with the farm work. They worked side by side, picking apples and harvesting grapes. Ruby got angry when her grandmother told her to work harder, so she said that she hated her.

That night, as she lay in bed, Ruby realized that she hates the farm.

Ruby glanced at the picture of her mother on the desk beside her bed. I'm sorry, Mom, she whispered. I just want Grandma to understand that this isn't my life. I want to do great things and help the world. I don't want to be stuck on this farm forever.

After a few hours, Ruby finally mustered the courage to leave her room. As she descended the stairs, she saw her grandparents sitting at the kitchen table. Dinner was ready, so she pulled out a chair and sat down.

Her grandparents didn't say anything, and Ruby wasn't sure if she should speak. Grandma, uhhmmm... I'm so... she began, but her grandmother interrupted her. Apology accepted. Now eat something, she said firmly.

Ruby smiled, but then felt compelled to explain herself. No, I'm really sorry. I don't hate you, I... She trailed off, unsure of how to express her feelings.

Come on, dear. Just say it, her grandfather encouraged her.

I just wanted to have my mother and help the world, Ruby said, her voice growing more intense.

Her grandparents placed their hands on top of hers. We know you want that, but this is only for a few years. After you're done with school, then you can go your own way, they reassured her.

Ruby's frustration boiled over. I want to go my own way now!
