    Accidental Wife - Thanggoulal Khongsai

    Prologue

‘John, your mom and I prefer you to keep your distance from any relationships with accidental girls. We like to arrange your wedding with Priya, whose father is my close friend. Do you understand me?’ said his father while he counselledcounselled John. He was listening to what his father has told him. He nodded his head and pledges to his daddy that he will heed him.

Both John and Priya were from different Schools. It was during my 9th Standard that I first met Priya for the first time in my life. She was amazing to me. I have no words to describe how much she looks satisfactory to me. From her character to her physical figure, attitude to the style of walk; everything about her made me crazy for the rest of our Class 9th session. On the last day of our School session, I decided to break my silence and went to speak to her. As I got closer, my knee began to shake and everything I thought I should say to her were disappear in my mind. She was talking and giggling with her friends and I stood at their back with my knee shaking. Some of the boys were chortling at my reaction, when Priya noticed them, she turns back with surprise, on seeing my reaction, she said, ‘Hello, why are you standing here?’

Her friends laugh at me. Priya too laughs out loud at me. This was embarrassing to me and I say, ‘I want to pie’.

The girls mock me and one of them even calls me a jerk and says ‘This is not a toilet. Find toilet, Man!’

Then, the other girl reacted again and say top me…

‘Don’t you see yourself? Come on, grow up, and go your way. You are disgusting to us.’

I remain speechless with the shame myself as my mission to talk to her failed miserably. I then look around and saw Charlie who is my best friend. I wave to him and when he noticed me, he came rushing to me and say with a heavy breath, ‘What’s the matter, Ajay? I am worn out. Why do you call me; you need my help?’

I look straight into his eye and reply to him, ‘I want to pie’

The girls continue to laugh at me. Many of them pointed at me and called me a jerk. Charlie was calm and wise enough to handle the situation. He said, ‘What do you laugh at him? Are you guys crazy or he is the one, he questions?'.

‘One of them say, ‘Charlie, don’t be over smart’.

There was an almost wee dispute between us. I took stock of my situation with mortification and requested Charlie to ignore them. We walk away towards the School fence Wall.

As we sat there for quite a moment discussing my problem with Charlie, Priya came to me to apologize for her attitude and her friends.

I look at her and beam, ‘You are welcome, Priya’. This was one such moment that I ever had in my life when a girl of my heart came to me for an apology. I gaped at her for quite a second without uttering any words. She was amazing. My mind blows up and prompts me to tell her that ‘I LOVE YOU’. I was dreaming about her for a minute until Charlie answered her!

Charlie then says to her, ‘Come sit with us.’

‘Ok,’ she said and sat with us… ‘So, what’s your name?’ She looks at me and asked.

‘I am Ajay. He is Charlie, my only friend’ I reply her and introduced Charlie.

‘I know Charlie. We knew each other before.

‘Yeah, we already know each other, Ajay’ Charlie added.

‘Priya, I’ve been looking for you throughout the year. You are amazing to me

‘Thank you, Ajay. I appreciate that

‘You have a boyfriend? ’I jump into direct questions even without knowing each other’s names. She felt awkward about what I asked and say, ‘I don’t share anything with a stranger’.

Charlie then added, ‘Oh No, n. Ajay. That’s too much. Anyway, let me answer that. Someone is proposing her though she remains single. He then looks at Rosy and added with a smile, ‘Am I right, Priya?

‘Oh. I won’t have until I am 21’ she replied.

I quickly reply to her response to what Charlie has asked ‘Well… that’s nice…21 is perfect, I think’

Charlie then interrupts: ‘Don’t you think 21 is too old?’

‘No. I don’t think it’s too old’ Priya replied.

The following year, I was promoted to Class 10 and she was to Class 9th. At the beginning of our new session, Charlie helps me to propose to her and she accepted my proposal within a month.

One fine evening after our School hour, I said ‘Priya, I would like to present you with the best gift I could ever do on your birthday’.

‘Of course, I would love to have that. It’s two months away from now.’

Her 15 Birth Day was her worst form of celebration and the gift I gave was the worst form of a gift. That night became the stumbling block in our relationship.

    Then I thought,

‘If Priya is alive today, I could have shared my feelings with her. Now that she is no more, her absence in my life pains my emotions, melts my innocent heart, weakens my physical well-being, and drains my attention and concentration to whatever I do’

    After 4 years:

I rang up Charlie and say, ‘I like to tell you something

    ‘Ok… tell me, Ajay…’

‘Life is unpredictable. If I were to imagine the world to be a better place, Priya's absence wouldn’t fulfil my imagination. I still miss her!’ I said to Charlie and lamented.

‘Stop thinking her. You are only punishing yourself. Forget it Ajay. She’s not coming back’ he said in such a concerned tone.

‘Can we meet tonight? I heard that you are back from Chicago’

‘Yes, I will meet you, Ajay. I have been thinking about meeting you the last two days.’ He replied and added ‘At 5 PM?’

    ‘Ok., 5 PM.’

We met in the evening at the Café stall. It was such a long time since we had never met ever since he left High School.

I said to him, ‘I have to tell you something important

‘I am here to listen, My friend. Come on.’ he said and slap my back.

With my head facing the ground, I say, ‘Lucy breaks me up, I am getting married to Rosy. I felt weird about how I ended up with her. What I did to her was accidental and now, I decided to choose her to be my lifetime accidental wife’.

    ‘Oh. That’s nice. But when?’

‘I don’t know. I don’t even like her. But, I think it is right for me to marry her

‘But why do have to marry her if you don’t like her?’

    ‘She is pregnant…’

    ‘PREGNANT? YOU SLEPT WITH HER?’

‘Yes, Charlie. It was accidental’ I said…

‘But why? That’s not fair. Ajay’

    ‘It’s a long story…Charlie’ I said.

‘Why don’t you tell me about that…’ he requested me.

I then turn around and fantasize how this would put us into different situations. After a few minutes of my imagination, I answered him ‘If you want to know. Listen, it goes like this…’

    One

‘Hello, John…If you’ve received this message, call me. I am Lucy!’

John was taking a shower and heard his message tone.

Thinking it could be his friend; he rubbed his head, wiped his hand, and picked up his phone from the table…

As he opened the message, he was surprised to see that one of his old friends was asking for a call. Thrill about it, he called back and within a few seconds, she answered the call.

‘Hello…Is this Lucy?’ John asked. ‘Yes, it is… aren’t you John?’ Lucy asked back.

‘Yes, I am. I received your text message…what’s the matter…’

‘I was trying to tell you in case we hang out for a party. Meantime, this will be our first meeting after such a month's gap’

    ‘Oh… Lucy, that’s a good idea… When?’

‘Tomorrow evening?’… ‘Yeah. That’s fine… Tomorrow evening! … I will be with one of my good friends. Will that be Ok? I asked her.

‘That’s cool… See you tomorrow’ She replied and cut the phone.

The next day, around 8:30 PM…

John requested and enlivened me to join him for a party! I wasn’t even sure to what party I was invited to but somehow, I felt the thrill to join him.

He was on cloud nine as this is one of her old friend’s invitations. We all met at Imphal Classic Cafe Bar that night. As we entered, the animated John saw Lucy sitting with a glass on her table with two Beer bottles and looking at her phone. I was all alone, standing in the corner of the bar inside, simply looking at those who were enjoying dancing…Tens of couples were moving to the tune of the music and some of them were standing longing for their dance partner.

John gradually walks through Lucy. He sits on the chair next to her. As she turned, John was already beside her… ‘Oh, you are here…? When did you arrive? And how are you John after such a long time?’

‘I’m fine…Hay, Lucy, you look beautiful…’ He stares at her with a self-satisfaction smirk. The two had huddled together.

‘Thank you, John…Ummmm You alone?’ Lucy asked.

‘Perhaps not…’ he replied, pointed at me, and muttered ‘There he is…Ajay. I came with him’

‘Is that him you talking about??’. ‘Yeah… He’s just a nice chap’ tittered John.

‘Drinks??’ … ‘Of course, it’s a party… Let me call Ajay’

John raises his hand with a gesture and calls me from his seat. I find my way to my friend and the moment I reached John, Lucy orders more cups and a bottle of Beer.

‘Take your seat, Ajay…She’s Lucy, my high school friend. You should meet her’ John introduced me to Lucy and request me to take my seat.

I was buzzed up and nervous as my first sight of Lucy was amazing to me. Gurgled and slightly affronted me… Lucy and John stared at each other maddened and guffawed. I got myself back and took the seat. I then looked at her straight without blinking and gave her my hand greeting and introduced ‘I’m Ajay, John’s friend…’

‘Nice to meet you, Ajay…Call me Lucy’.

‘Thank you, Lucy… You look good’ I complimented and grinned.

My admiration for Lucy, at first sight, maddened me right away. ‘John, she is amazing to me. Would you like to share about me with her?’ I gossiped and tickled my skin and said to John.

John smiled and nodded his head. I couldn’t seriously keep off my eye on Lucy and as I kept staring, she got embarrassed. She then winked her eyes at John to tell him that I seemed to be leering at her. John then asks Lucy to pour beer into the glass…

‘Ajay, you know how Lucy and I met? Want to know?’

‘Sure, John. Tell me about it…’

Lucy was not comfortable and asked ‘Why is this topic? Can we change? In the meantime, I call you here to inform you that my family and I will be shifting to Delhi three-month after from now…’

    ‘Oh, Lucy that’s nice…’

Listening to their conversation, I become more and more curious to know about Lucy. John then passed the glass meant for me and Lucy which was filled with Kingfisher beer. John was sitting in the middle and each time Lucy filled the glass, I couldn’t stop looking at her. From her bending neck to pouring a glass, everything about her makes me feel whole and wonderful.

Being too mad about her, I asked Lucy to hand over the beer to me. She said, ‘It’s OK, I’ll manage it’.

I feel somehow relaxed as I thought Lucy wouldn’t even dare to look at me at all. Instead, I found her cool and nice to talk to.

‘I am done… Let’s dance John’ said Lucy and held his hand. This vexed me and inflamed me so I started to switch to another Bottle of bees.

They both dance and left me sitting alone watching the two dancing from my seat. I filled the glass with beer, looked around, and kept drinking…I was disappointed with the way my friend John had treated me… I thought he would help me dance with Lucy or find me another girl. Unable to control it, I kept filling the glass and drinking and drinking. In the mid of that, I heard a girl talking loud on the phone which makes me uncomfortable. As I turned my back, I saw her. I said to myself, ‘There she is!’. She was drunk leaning on the wall just a few meters away from me. She was talking about her financial condition and her wish to vacate the room. As she was drinking, it appears to me that her friends had already left her.

At the time, I found myself lonely and depressed; I found this drunken woman eye-catching. I went closer to her in hope of having a conversation. As I moved closer and pretended to be someone with whom I can help her solves the problems, I stood next to her, she turns back and stared at me with anger. She kept struggling to solve her talks with her landlord and I remain silent listening to what she was talking about… I finally moved to stand next to her to make sure I could be her help.

‘I told you I’ll pay the rent. I’ll be back in a week…’… Paused a while and say…

‘No no… I’ll be back and pay you for sure’ screamed and said. She cuts the phone and murmured, ‘Disgusting landlord, mindless landlord’.

She hangs up her phone and as she began to walk out, I stop her and say, ‘Hey. Miss… You’re drunk. Stay with me for a while. I will take care of you

She looks and me in silence. I then clear my throat and say…

‘Hello, I am Ajay…Whom you are talking to…’

    ‘I’m sorry it’s personal…’… ‘Ok, I got it…More drinks??’ I asked.

‘Sure…anyway, do I know you?’ she asked curiously…

‘Don’t think so… Not a matter. I am Ajay’ I said and shake hands with her.

‘I’m sorry for being rude…Ummm anyway. I had a heated argument with my toxic landlord… Oh, call me Rosy’ revealed in saddened character.

‘Oh. that’s usual. I too often had sometimes…So, where are you from

‘I am from a village, Near Kangpokpi Town, doing my graduation here in Imphal…’

‘What about you.’… ‘I’m from this city’.

‘That’s good…. You know, !! Do I look drunk? You told me I am drunk’

‘No, you look fine. I said so
