After many lifetimes of solitude, my mate is here at last.

Four years ago, I jolted awake by scorching energy flowing through me as the Savior’s soul claimed mine. After several millennia, my wait is over—she’s finally here.

Her arrival, however, foreshadowed a war between the Nephilim and the Fallen.

Since then, I’ve traveled the world in search of her, but she’s been elusive. I know she’s near—I feel her in my soul.

However, time is running out. I need to find her and keep her safe, regardless of the cost, since she’s the key to saving us all.

    Chapter 1: Escape

    Viktor

Ibackpedaled a few paces to buy myself time from Alec's relentless attacks. His eyes narrowed like a predator waiting to strike while I shook my aching muscles. Then his right leg flexed before he leaped and stuck me with a spin kick.

My reflexes were slowing from exhaustion, so I dodged his kick by a hair’s breadth, then lost my balance and landed on my back with a thud.

The door slammed shut, making us glance at Ti and Celeste.

    Thank fuck.

I dropped my head on the mat with relief, giving my shaky muscles the needed rest. No way was I giving Alec a win. He’d never let me live it down if I tapped out of our sparring sessions, but fuck was he intense.

Ti sneered at my inner musing through our mate bond. You need to talk to him. She said in my mind.

My shoulders tensed, but she was right. I should stop trying to avoid this conversation. Alec needed an intervention since he had been getting more unbearable these past few weeks.

Ti’s smugness shot through our bond, which had me shooting her an irritated look.

Will you two stop that? Alec snapped.

Sorry, Alec. Celeste and I just stopped by to let you two know we’re going on an assignment.

What do you mean? Where are you going? I took off my gloves and stepped out of the ring with a frown, not liking the idea of my mate being away.

I’m going with Celeste in search of Elija and Miriam, Ti said with a hint of sadness. Everyone had been searching for clues, hoping we'd find our fifth and our matriarch. There was a gaping hole left in their absence.

Is there any new intel? Alec leaned on the door of the octagon ring in interest since he and Mr. St Clair have never been the same since his mother’s disappearance. So has Celeste. She had been somber since losing her mate. It was only recently that Alec refocused his attention on finding the Savior.

No. I have had no premonitions about their whereabouts. I just needed to follow some leads, and Aaron didn’t want me to go alone, Celeste replied.

Did you want us to go with you? Alec straightened up and undid his hand wraps.

No, we need to speak to a contact, and it needs to be just us girls. Celeste shook her head.

How long will you be gone for? I flashed Ti an intense stare, hoping they'd be back tonight.

Ti glanced at Celeste with her brows raised.

I don’t know. It just depends on where the intel leads us. To my dismay, Celeste shrugged, meaning I’d be sleeping on a cold, empty bed tonight.

Maybe while we’re away, you and Alec can spend some guy’s time, huh? Ti eyed me meaningfully, then shot a glance at Alec.

Maybe some quality guy’s time would make Alec open up. Plus, It was better than waiting around for Ti so I peeked at Alec to gauge his reaction. What do you think?

    He shrugged.

    Talk to him. Ti urged.

    Fine.

Call if you need us, and be careful, Alec said.

Celeste nodded and gave Alec and me a hug.

Ti kissed me and I wrapped my arms around her in a crushing hug as I deepened the kiss while my hand slipped down to her butt, trying to savor her before she left me bereft. With one last squeeze of her ass, I murmured, See you in a few, babes. She flashed me a grin, and I felt her desire through our bond. When I released her, she turned to Alec. You take care of this bloke.

    Alec chuckled and hugged Ti.

When they were gone, I tossed a water bottle to Alec. So, where do you think we should go?

He stopped drinking and frowned. We don’t need to go anywhere. Plus, we probably need to be on standby in case they need us.

Dude, we need to go. This is our only chance for guys’ time.

    I don’t know.

What do you mean, you don’t know? You had been moping around and haven’t been with a girl in a while. It’s making you intense, and not just with training. You need to let loose a little.

Alec tossed the bottle in the trash and headed out with a towel draped around his neck.

Seriously, we’re going. I quickened my strides to catch up with him.

Vik, I don’t need a girl. I need to find the Savior. I don’t even know her name. She’s been on earth for four years now, and I still haven’t found her. Time is running out. He said with tense shoulders and purposeful strides.

Well, you won’t find her moping around. So pack your bags and be ready to leave in an hour, I called as he walked down the hall towards his room.

    Alec

Is that a fucking buffalo? I followed Vik’s gaze towards a domesticated white yak with a colorful saddle on its hump.

    It’s a yak, idiot. I chuckled.

How the fuck would I know that? When I said guys’ time, I didn’t mean out in the middle of nowhere. There are literally miles and miles of land and a YAK. Vik plopped on the grass and watched the animal moodily.

Well, I suggested Russia, but I’m not the one who couldn’t step foot there, now am I? I realized this wasn't what Vik meant by guys’ time but I couldn't be distracted by my goal. The need to find the Savior consumed my every waking hour, which got stronger each passing day. My instincts were screaming at me that something's coming and we need her.

Vik shot me a scowl. What are we looking for?

I told you. I heard of a fighting technique I want to learn, and if we can’t go to Russia, this is the next best place to find someone to teach us. If I were to endure this distraction, I might as well be productive. In the years that I’d been alive, I’d mastered many fighting techniques since it has been my life’s goal to be the best guardian.

Well, I see land. Where do you suggest we go from here?

Stop being crabby. That’s a domesticated yak. It means it has an owner nearby.

Fine, he grumbled, then closed his eyes and concentrated on the surrounding energy before jumping up abruptly in a fighting stance.

    What? I whispered.

    Fallen.

    I stood next to him—alert.

Fifty yards away, a tall female Fallen materialized with her palms up and hands out. She had long black hair with pale light skin and hazel eyes. She wore layers of clothing that hid her skinny frame.

Vik had a fireball out and ready.

Even at this distance, we could hear each other. I come in peace. Please. She implored, her hand extended in a placating gesture.

Vik and I shared a suspicious glance. It could be a trap. However, I couldn’t feel any additional energy in the area, so we outnumbered her.

I placed my hand on Vik’s shoulder and apparated us in front of her.

She stepped back in surprise, and the yak stomped its hooves in agitation. She reached out, laid her hand on the animal’s neck, and whispered something.

My brow furrowed in confusion. Since when does Fallen keep pets?

I scanned the yak, but its energy was only that of a normal animal. However, the female was definitely a Fallen.

What do you want, Fallen? Vik let his fireball grow.

She eyed it uneasily while her hand tightened on the animal’s fur.

    Please. I come in peace.

Vik chuckled. There’s no such thing with you creatures.

I heard her heart gallop in fear as her eyes kept darting sideways, possibly hoping to escape. This was the distraction I needed. A good fight always puts me in a good mood.

There’s no escaping, so don’t even try, I said in warning, my body wired and itching for action.

Her shoulders slumped, and she looked up with distress in her eyes. Please. I’m not like the others. I live alone. I don’t wreak destruction, and I don’t mean you harm. You had sensed me, so I showed myself. I was hoping you would leave without incident.

Vik laughed at her absurd statement.

Please scan me if you must, but I’m telling the truth. She stepped forward with her hands outstretched once again.

Vik and I eyed each other in surprise since, in our world, it was unusual for someone to offer such a thing. It was dangerous and often placed the other in a vulnerable position.

I didn't know what this Fallen was playing at, but I didn't have the time for her games or the patience to linger. If she were willing to submit, then I would not argue. We’ll need to do it together, so step forward and have a seat.

With balled fists and straight back filled with tension, she marched closer and sat crossed-legged.

Vik and I stepped forward, with our shields in place, ready for anything. We laid our hands on her head and dove into her thoughts. Individually, we didn’t have the natural ability to siphon out her memory. So together, one guided the energy as the other went through the complex electrical impulses of the brain. One wrong move and we could either erase her memory, alter it, kill a portion of her brain, or kill her. It was perilous, which was why we’d done it only a handful of times. Usually, Nephilims who had natural affinities with the mind were used.

We didn’t linger in her mind since we only needed to confirm the accuracy of her story. After a few tense minutes, Vik and I pulled out of her memory with a shared shocked expression.

This Fallen female had been living in seclusion for most of her life, after her partner was killed centuries ago. She had been hiding here since then.

With her shoulders slumped, she slowly got up. I know what you saw, and it might seem unbelievable for someone like me, but I assure you we are capable of feelings and falling in love. On rare occasions, we even find our mates. Some of us also believe in redemption.

Vik and I backed up and gave her space, the tension in my body leaving, but was quickly replaced with curiosity. Never had I heard of a Fallen capable of good deeds since they were usually driven by darkness.

Eli and I… She looked away and gazed into the empty land. We were as close as you can get to mates, but we never got the chance to complete the bond. We often talked about running away and hiding since we no longer wanted to fight—we didn’t know where to begin, and it terrified us. When he passed… She took a deep breath and faced us. I took the opportunity and staged my death. No one questioned it or bothered confirming if I had lived, so I’ve been in hiding ever since. I’ve been lucky that I have encountered no one from our world in years.

I most especially never heard of a mated Fallen. It was too far-fetched to believe, but her memories couldn't lie.

What have you been doing? How can the locals not realize what you are? Vik asked, his voice filled with skepticism.

I live far away from the village. She shrugged. I don’t really have any friends, so no one would recognize me.

Sounds like a very lonely life, I said, now determined to know more about her kind.

She turned to me sharply and then walked back to the yak. It’s better than the constant darkness and bloodshed I lived with for millennia, she muttered.

Have you considered starting a normal family? I prodded while we walked next to her down the hill.

She scrunched up her brow in contemplation. I… Not really, she said carefully. Who would want someone like me?

Well, have you tried? Vik asked, eyeing her with curiosity.

She didn’t answer. Instead, she walked in silence for a few miles.

Without needing to discuss it further, Vik and I followed her, intending to find out more about this mysterious Fallen.

    Chapter 2: Unexpected

    Alec

The Fallen lived in a quaint log cabin by the side of the mountain surrounded by trees. You would probably miss it if you didn’t know where to look. It was homey and comfortable and had the basic amenities. However, it was too normal for a Fallen.

Vik and I eyed each other as she took the yak behind the house. We didn’t dare communicate telepathically, since we knew she could tap into our conversation.

Come in. She waved us in from the opened door.

Two giant furry dogs, one black and one brown, bounded towards us when we stepped over the threshold. Tashi! Dawa! Come.

Vik and I stood still while they sniffed our legs before moving to her. We eyed the giant dogs warily but stopped in our tracks when we saw a fucking snow leopard lounging on the couch, staring at us with its tail twitching lazily.

What the fuck? Vik stepped back, grabbing my arm.

What? The Fallen turned to us. Oh, Jampa? Don’t mind her; she’s harmless. She scratched the giant cat behind the ear, as if it was a regular tabby cat.

What’s with the giant animals? Vik asked in a terse voice.

The temperatures drop way below freezing in the winter, so they have very thick fur that makes them look bigger. I rescued these guys out in the wild when they were young. They had lost their mother, and they’ve kept me company since. I would have more if I had the space, but throughout the years, we’ve had to nurse the abandoned or injured animals until they could care for themselves and then release them back into the wild. Some of them lived close by. She smiled affectionately.

Vik and I raised our brows at the crazy Fallen.

What’s your name? Vik sat on the table, far away from the enormous cat.

Oh, how rude of me. I’m Cora. She stepped close and shook our hands.

    Viktor.

Alec. Thanks for inviting us to your home, Cora. I felt at ease with her, especially after I studied her energy fully—she didn't have the cold and slimy signature of a Fallen. Was it possible for her kind to earn redemption? In the thousands of years I'd walked this earth, not once had I ever heard of such a thing. Maybe Cora was unusual for her kind.

It’s my pleasure, Alec. As you know, I get little interaction, so this is pleasant.

I took the other chair next to Vik, who looked at me with large round eyes. My lips quirked when I glanced at the huge mastiff who laid its giant head on Vik’s leg, followed by the other who took his other leg. Vik’s entire body froze, and he stared at me in panic.

Aww, they like you, Cora exclaimed.

I chuckled, but Viktor flashed me with pleading eyes.

    Just pet them, I urged.

He tentatively placed his hand on top of their heads and gave them two quick pats. There. Okay, time to go now. However, the dogs only gazed at him, slobbering on his leg.

Laugh escaped my mouth. Dude, do you not know how to pet a dog?

He shook his head in irritation, which had me laughing harder. Cora held in a laugh, but she couldn’t contain her amused expression. What brings you two here? she asked with a grin.

We are seeking a sensei to learn Tescao.

The leopard let out a loud yawn, and Viktor jumped on his seat. Jesus.

I snickered, which had him scowling at me. Why are you so jumpy around animals?

Have you ever been bitten by one? he snapped while the two dogs kept trying to nudge his hand. Okay, giant dogs. Please leave me alone. He scooted his chair back but failed to disway the dog’s attempts.

Cora watched Vik with her lips turned up, then turned to me. I don’t know if you’ll find anyone who teaches Tescao formally these days. It’s a lost art with an unknown origin. The rumor is that the art was passed down from different generations of the Tescao family until the Chinese invasion. However, the current style is a diluted art with no specific rules. I can teach you what I know—if you would like to learn from me, that is. She continued to pet Jampa and peeked at us from under her lashes.

I felt Vik’s eyes on me along with his negative energy, but something about the Fallen had intrigued me. Plus, I wanted to learn Tescao. That would be great. Thanks for the offer. I smiled.

I heard Vik let out a sigh in defeat.

Cora smiled in response. There are two rooms. The animals sometimes use the spare when they’re not welcome in mine, but I will get it ready for you two.

Oh, don’t bother. We don’t want to impose. We can camp outside, Vik insisted.

It’s no bother. She got up, and her smile widened.

As soon as she stepped out of the room, he turned to me and mouthed. What the fuck?

I shrugged and looked around the decent-sized wood house. Despite it being tucked under the mountains, it was homey. There were red, blue, gold, and colorful rugs covering the floors, bright tapestry decorating the walls, and the bold table runners.

The two never left Vik’s side. Their eyes tracked him steadily. Why are they staring at me, Alec? Make them stop.

I laughed. Give them attention, Vik.

"You give them attention," he snapped.

The enormous cat got up and stretched.

    Fuck! Cora! Vik called.

    Aren’t you a Nephilim? I snickered.

Cora came back in, wearing a confused look as Vik pointed to Jampa.

Don’t mind him, I said, since Vik was acting ridiculous.

Jampa slinked close to us and rubbed against Vik’s leg on her way out. Which had Vik tensing then when the cat was out of the room he slump in his chair which had me laughing out loud.

Laugh it up, asshole. These animals aren’t fucking with you.

They can probably smell your fear, I said with a wide smile.

Maybe we should just camp outside.

There are probably wild animals outside.

Fucking should have risked Russia, he muttered.

Which had me sniggering and dodging the potholder he threw at me.

    image-placeholder

Cora sat in front of a roaring fire. On her lap were knitting needles and bright, colorful yarn. Vik and I stood by the trees, far enough that even her keen hearing couldn’t discern our conversation. Why do we have to stay here? Vik hissed.

    What’s wrong with staying here?

Well, for starters. I don’t want to be cat chow.

There’s something about her. I don’t know what it is yet, but we need to find out.

Oh, now you’re interested. Why can’t you be interested in normal girls? One without killer animals?

Vik man, grow a pair and start acting like the commander of the Nephilim. I slapped his shoulder and made my way to Cora.

Easy for you to say, he grumbled, following behind me.

Smells good, I said when we approached Cora.

She looked up from stirring the enormous clay pot. I hope you don’t mind. I made soup.

We’re not picky. We appreciate the hospitality; please don’t go out of your way. We can take care of ourselves. We want to learn Tesco, and we can compensate you in return.

No need. She shook her head. It’s been so long since I’ve had a company that I had forgotten what it’s like. She looked away, but not before I caught the sadness in her eyes. We can start at first light.

She dished out noodle soup with vegetables and broke some bread. This is fantastic. Thank you for making it, Vik said in between bites.

I nodded in agreement as I scarfed the tasty meal. So, have you encountered any of our kind since you went into hiding?

Her face tightened, and she chewed her bread carefully, then set her bowl down before answering. I didn’t always live here. I moved around and tried to find my place in society. However, whether when I encountered a Fallen or Nephilim, it was never pleasant, even if I meant no harm. I longed to live in peace, but they made it impossible. She crossed her arms and scowled at the fire.

Vik set his bowl down with narrowed eyes. How did you defeat everyone?

I have my talents. She shrugged.

He watched her for a few heartbeats, suspicion filling his stare.

However, her words rang true, and I didn’t doubt her words.

    What talents? Vik pushed.

Forgive me, but I have learned my lesson. Even though I had invited you to my home, I am outnumbered, so I’m not about to give away my only defense. She jutted her pointy chin and crossed her arms.

Jampa must have sensed her distress because she came out of nowhere and rubbed her head on her shoulder. Cora reached behind her and stroked her chin. Her two giant dogs wagged their tails as they noticed the tension leave their master.

We didn’t mean to upset you. You have been nothing but gracious. Unfortunately, there is so much mistrust between our kind. Although our words won’t mean much, we don’t mean any harm unless you strike first.

She inclined her head and started gathering the bowls.

Let us clean up since you made dinner, Vik offered.

She smiled and sat back as I gathered the bowls, and Vik lifted the clay pot, still half-filled with soup. The three animals eyed him hungrily. When he finally noticed, he froze.

Cora covered her mouth and failed to hide her laughter, drawing mine out as well.

Oh, I see. This is payback, isn’t it? he asked with a clenched jaw.

Cora laughed openly, and I doubled over as the three animals circled Vik, who held the pot as far away from his body as he could with one hand. Hilarious fucker. I’ll toss this if I have to. Stop laughing and help me.

Cora wiped her eyes and said, If you do that, they will go hungry tonight.

Vik gave her a nasty look and glared at me.

Taking pity on him, I asked, Where do they eat?

They have bowls inside. Cora gestured towards her cottage.

I grabbed the pot from Vik and handed him the bowls.

    Chapter 3: Trial

    Alec

Viktor hid a yawn as Cora walked past him.

You should carry out your strikes to the most vulnerable zones: the eyes, throat, groin, kidneys, solar plexus, Cora said.

Vik blinked hard as I glowered at him. The idiot couldn’t sleep until trading spots with me, which were further away from the door. Even after reassuring him that the animals couldn’t get in through the shut door. However, he insisted that the flimsy door didn’t stand a chance with the size of the animals.

Cora paused in front of Vik with narrowed eyes, then continued. There aren’t specific rules or methods. That’s what makes it unique. It has endless variety.

Vik shook his body and attempted to focus. I really wanted to learn Tescao, so I zapped his arm. Ouch. Fucker! He jumped.

Cora spoke louder, gaining our attention. Since you are Nephilim, you won’t need to start from the beginning. Tescao is about strength, flexibility, precision, control, endurance, and agility. It is also about mental strength, concentration, determination, discipline, fighting spirit, and serenity.

Cora stood almost as tall as me. She wore her hair in a bun and regular modern athletic gear, showing her toned physique.

    Did you hear me, Alec?

    Sorry. Can you repeat that?

Vik chuckled, and it was my turn to glare at him.

Cora’s high cheekbones flushed. I asked if you wanted to go through some drills to test some skills, or did you want just to jump right in and spar?

Oh, well. I think we should test our skills before we spar, I answered, determined to learn.

Great. I don’t have fancy training facilities, so we’ll use nature. Follow me.

She led us to the foot of the mountain and pointed towards the top, which was covered by clouds. I want to test your endurance, determination, and discipline. We’ll hike up that mountain without using our powers. We could only use the surrounding resources, but we could bring water with us. She handed out water bottles. When we reach the top, we will meditate, and then hike down. When we get back, we can have a meal, so we must make it back by nightfall. Humans take days to hike this trail, but we shouldn’t have a problem making good time. She turned around to face us with her hands on her hips. If we fail, then we’ll need to repeat the exercise tomorrow. We fail if we make it back late. If one of us uses our powers, we fail. If one fails, then everyone fails. She grinned.

How high is that? Vik squinted with his head tilted up.

6000 meters above sea level and we won’t be taking the hiking trail. We’re using the dangerous terrain. Our goal is not to disturb the natural environment or attract wild animals. This requires us to be light on our feet with precise footsteps. This will test our agility. You’ll need concentration, discipline, endurance, and everything else I have mentioned. I’ll be very impressed if we can succeed in one go. Her footsteps sped up towards the mountain.

Vik rubbed his hands together, his eyes alight at her words. I like the challenge, he called over his shoulder, marching ahead of me.

Peace filled me as I enjoyed my quiet surroundings. We walked in silence until the early morning mist was long gone, and the heat of the sun burned the back of our necks.

We should be past the halfway point based on the treeline. Thoughts of the Savior crept into my mind, but for once it didn’t fill me with anxiety. Instead of taking us through the empty rocky trails, Cora took us through the thick vegetation with a steeper climb. The rigorous terrain strained my muscles and eased the tension inside of me. We didn’t dare make a sound for fear of attracting any wild animals. As we climbed higher and higher, the temperature dropped, and patches of snow were more frequent.

After several more hours of hiking, we found our path blocked with only thick tree trunks overhead and thick vegetation to the right or cliffs with a steep drop to our left. There was no handhold for us to climb on, so we paused and looked at Cora for guidance.

She gestured to Viktor, who was in front of her, to continue.

He flashed her with an incredulous scowl.

She insistently motioned for him to continue.

His gaze darted to me, then back to her, as if to say, can you believe her?

I couldn’t find any other way except to push through the thick vegetation, so I motioned Vik to continue.

He shot me a skeptical look, then turned around and assessed the block in front of him.

He looked up and gauged how high the nearest branch overhead was.

I followed his gaze to the branch twenty feet off the ground, then dismissed the route right away. Even as Nephilims, we didn’t have the required leverage to jump, and from this angle, he couldn’t guarantee if the branch could hold his weight and risk falling off the cliff. His best bet was to wade through the vegetation.

With his mind made up, he backed up and gestured for us to do the same. The idiot was going to attempt the branch. I shook my head, reached for his shoulder, and tapped on it. He looked back, and I shook my head frantically.

    He mouthed, what?

    I pointed to the vegetation.

He shook his head and mouthed animals, then shuddered.

The idiot would rather plunge to death than face a wild animal. I tapped his shoulder again and glared at him as I jabbed my finger forward, pointing towards the vegetation.

Cora nodded her head in agreement.

Vik looked between us, then at the vegetation, then up at the tree branch, then down the cliff, before sighing. I heard him growl under his breath before he slowly parted the vegetation.

I struggled as we crawled through a tight space between tree trunks while branches and thorns cut our skin and tangled our legs. Visibility was about a foot in front of us, and we couldn’t hear each other’s progress. It was tempting to use our powers. Only the thought of going through this again tomorrow held me back.

When the vegetation thinned out, I could finally make out Cora’s outline. I didn’t know how humans hiked the accursed mountain. Without our enhanced senses, we would have failed a long time ago.

Finally, I made it out of the thickest part, but paused when I spotted Cora’s frozen outline.

I was about to ask why she stopped when I saw Vik crouched in front of her. My heart raced against my chest as I thought he was injured since we were in the maze for about an hour. He wouldn’t be able to call out to us and ask for help.

I surveyed Vik for injuries, then my breath caught as I noticed a movement on the lower branches of the tree. A giant snow leopard had its head low, its eyes focused on Vik—its long furry tail swished back and forth, and its muscular limbs flexed into a crouch, ready to pounce. Vik didn’t move a muscle, but the veins on his neck popped with tension as sweat beaded his forehead. My muscles tensed as I focused on the majestic beast, prepared to intervene if needed.

I heard Cora whisper something under her breath. The leopard hissed at Cora, then pushed off with its hind legs. My muscles tensed, ready to lunge while Vik sucked in a breath, but it soared over our heads and silently padded towards the thick vegetation.

Viktor dropped to the ground, sucking in a shaky breath. Cora offered him her waterskin. He reached for it and took big gulps, with most of it splashing on his chin and shirt. He sat his ass on the dirt, his chest heaving up and down.

I squatted in front of him and patted his shoulder, then pulled him up with me. He was unlucky with large animals. After this trip, he would really hate giant cats now.

After the leopard incident, we were hyper-vigilant and hyper-aware of our surroundings. We made use of our keen senses and kept track of the wild animals around us. We had to detour and take a more challenging route twice just to avoid them. We could not hack our way through, so we had to climb, crawl, or barrel through blindly. The terrain got icy the higher we got, but there was no more vegetation to wade through.

Our feet sunk deeper into the snow, all the way to our shins sometimes, which made the terrain harder to traverse. The further we went, the more I questioned the decision of this insane idea. As Nephilim, we struggled little since we always used our powers to our advantage. I don’t recall my hands freezing to where I couldn’t grab on to anything to aid my ascent. I also couldn’t work out enough to feel my muscles ache and shake. I certainly never get a headache.

When the sun dipped, the beauty of my surroundings was lost on me because I could only focus on making it to the top, ready for this day to be over.

Even Vik wore a scowl and would occasionally throw Cora a glare. However, the freaking Fallen’s demeanor hadn’t changed throughout our journey. She even looked like she was enjoying herself.

She was relentless and only allowed us brief breaks, just enough to drink water and regain our strength. Surely, humans took several days to get to the top. Even with our enhanced abilities, it took us most of the day to get to the top.

Each step was a struggle. I felt human and needed to distract myself with the thoughts of the Savior as I climbed this wretched mountain.

Since I could sense the Savior from anywhere, I focused on sensing her energy. I was certain she was in Los Angeles. After years of traveling the world, I kept feeling a pull towards home. Even now, the need to go home tugged at my core. Something I’d gotten used to since the day I first felt her soul. Lost in the memory, it was as if I was experiencing the day over again.

Energy crackled around me as I jolted upright from sleep. I woke up to sparks of electricity surrounding me.

I listened to the waves crashing against the stone walls of the lighthouse, but it sounded normal, and the wind blew in a gentle whisper instead of the angry whip of a rampaging wave during a storm. If it wasn’t from a storm, where did it come from? I didn’t conjure it so I climbed out of bed, but a blast of pure energy knocked me back into the mattress and flooded into me, causing my muscles to lock up. My mouth opened in pain with a soundless cry as my throat closed, caging my breath in my lungs.

I failed to erect my shields. Even my futile attempts had been useless against it. This was it, my ultimate death, I thought, since I had never felt such a potent force of foreign energy invade my body, saturating my cells and molding into my being.

The energy had bound itself with my soul. I laid in bed, unable to move a muscle for several minutes as the energy continued to pound into me. I was surprised to be still alive.

Then the assault quickly stopped and my hand shook as I brushed the hair out of my face. I took several shaky breaths in, then studied the new energy coursing through me. Then I recognized the energy inside of me—the Savior!

That was four years ago. Her potent energy changed something inside of me. Since then, I have felt her presence in every cell in my body. I had searched for her, to no avail. The only certainty I had was she was close to home, and when it was time, I would find her. I just needed to be patient.

I allowed the Savior’s energy to course through my entire being. It was something I did often, since it felt like she was next to me. Her presence soothing my rough edges. My struggle left me and I felt renewed. When Cora stopped in front of me, I was still lost in the Savior’s essence. Cora touched my arm to get my attention. She wore a tender smile as she handed me a drink.

I noticed Vik smirk behind her. I took the drink and furrowed my brow at Vik. Cora tapped my shoulder and gestured for me to follow. Her eyes were bright with excitement.

I followed her through a narrow trail with tall trees on one side and cliffs on the other. I sped up when Cora disappeared around the curve.

My eyes lit up as I turned the corner that revealed the peak of the mountain. We had finally reached our destination.

I inhaled the thin cold and joined Cora on the rocks.

The hike had been worth it. We stood above the clouds, surrounded by mountains on the horizon and the treetops below our feet. Most of all, it was eerily peaceful. There were no sounds.

Vik sighed next to me, then plopped down and took it all in quietly.

I couldn’t pry my eyes away from the mesmerizing view. When I finally looked towards my companions, I found Cora on a rock in a meditative pose with her eyes closed. I moved in front of her and tried to get her attention, but she didn’t stir.

Vik shrugged and found another spot to meditate in.

Must we meditate? With a frown, I stared at both of them, since I hated being in my head. With my arms crossed, I gazed at the sinking sun, stalling for time. I suppose I’d better try, otherwise, we wouldn’t get down until midnight. Then we’d have to repeat this hike again tomorrow.

I found a spot away from Cora and Viktor, but I had difficulty concentrating. I kept opening my eyes, hating the sight of the two who looked peaceful in their trance. I kept gazing at the view of the snow-capped mountains surrounding us and gave up on meditation. Instead, I focused on the Savior’s energy, something I’d been doing obsessively during the past four years.

With my eyes closed, I felt the familiar energy tingle within me. The quietness of the surroundings allowed me to concentrate and study her energy, which was now as familiar as my own. It had successfully melded with me. I’d feel lost without it even though I still didn’t understand how we were connected. In my spare time, I tested her energy, trying to learn everything about it. I learned to command it and wield it like I did mine.

I tried separating our energies and tracing where hers had latched on to mine, but I couldn’t find where our connection point—there was no beginning or end in our essence. However, they were distinct. I sunk deeper into my concentration and tried molding our energies so they would become one and indistinguishable.

My heartbeat slowed—the sounds, and the awareness of my surroundings had vanished. Her energy pressed into mine until our energy was one. For the first time, I felt her close. As if I could just reach out and touch her. My excitement spiked, which had me concentrating harder, until I had a good grasp of her location.

My nerves sizzled with triumph because I knew without a doubt that I could follow the energy back to her exact location. My energy sparked at my intense emotions. It was like it was responding to my feelings. It glowed brightly and danced over my skin. A giant grin broke through my face until I spotted Cora and Vik’s worried looks.

    What? I asked.

Vik stood in front of Cora in a protective stance. I glanced at her and noted the fear in her eyes.

Easy, Alec. Vik held his hand out. You could take out half the mountain with the energy you’re packing.

I looked down and realized my body was alight with my silver aura—the source of our power; it’s where our raw energy comes from. The more powerful the Nephilim, the more solid and lighter their aura is.

I tried to tame the power coursing through me by directing it to reinforce my shields. It took me several tries to disperse the energy since I fought against my nature when detaching from the Savior.

What do you want? Vik snarled.

How did they find me? Cora whispered under her breath.

My head snapped up and saw two men approach. With the glow still coating my body, if I lost control, I could hurt Vik and Cora.

The two newcomers had evil auras. Definitely Fallen, but unlike Cora, theirs were dark and slimy.

Your boy here is throwing some serious energy, almost begging to be found, a skinny man with brown skin and slicked-back hair said. He held a fireball in his hand, which he tossed casually back and forth. His companion stood next to him, who had similar features except he was balding and had black eyes with a stoic expression. His gaze narrowed, and his body stiffened up as he zeroed in on Cora.

Vik stepped forward, blocking Cora from sight.

The black-eyed Fallen glanced sideways at this companion, his aura pulsing darker. With tensed muscles, he spread his legs hip-width apart, prepared to attack.

I frantically looked around for something to use as a weapon, since I desperately needed a sword. We weren’t armed since we didn’t expect a fight. However, I felt energy burst out of the palm of my hands.

My heart sped up, and I cried out in fear. Watch out!

Everyone turned to me, including the Fallen.

I looked down at my hands in shock to find a sword. A fucking actual sword made of energy! With the Savior’s energy pulsing inside of me, and my adrenaline pumping through my veins, I’d manifested an energy sword. It sizzled and danced with raw power.

With a large menacing grin, I swung the sword and looked at the Fallen with a challenge. I swung it back and forth a few more times with a smug grin and stepped forward. The fear in their eyes grew as the sword whistled and crackled through the air.

I briefly glanced at Vik and Cora, but ignored their shocked expression and advanced toward the Fallen. The Savior’s combined energy fueled my confidence and the desire to eliminate the threat. You picked the wrong fight, Fallen.

They responded by throwing a fireball at me while the other sent a lightning bolt my way. I swatted the fireball with my sword and blocked the lightning with an upward swing. The lightning ricocheted back to the Fallen, which they barely dodged. They quickly launched a simultaneous attack, which I easily evaded. The fire in my veins sharpened my senses, which allowed me to see the slight twitch of their muscles. It made it easy for me to expect their next move.

With the narrow space we had, we couldn’t afford to prolong the fight. Even though they were experienced fighters, their aura was no match for mine. With a glance, I noted Vik had pulled Cora away from us, but with the amount of energy being thrown around, I couldn’t risk it. I had to end this fast.

I lunged and landed in between the Fallen, then I quickly swung my sword in an arc and decapitated the Fallen with the fireball, which dissipated the fireball as his body dropped with a thump. The other ducked and sent a massive bolt of lightning towards me. I didn’t block fast enough, so I flew and hit a tree branch with a grunt as my shield took most of the damage. Although my shield protected me, the blow to my back from the impact with the tree would still leave a bruise.

My sword flickered, and I felt my energy wane. Fuck, I needed to end this soon.

The Fallen quickly gathered more lightning energy, so I blasted him with raw power. Something only a handful of us could do. He staggered backward and released his lightning, which struck my shields. Since I already spent a lot of energy, the hit caused my attack to ease up briefly, but I forced my aura to keep expelling raw power, which could overpower anyone’s aura. I gave it one more push and broke through his shield, and in seconds, he crumpled to the ground, his empty, dark eyes gazed over the clouds.

I bent over in relief and felt Vik’s hand on my back. Are you okay?

    Yeah.

Alec, are you okay? Cora asked.

That was freaking fantastic! How the hell did you produce that wicked sword, man?

I smiled. Never mind that now. I turned to Cora. Did you recognize those men?

She shook her head, but worry marred her expression.

We should head back before more of them show up.

Vik glanced at Cora, Are we hiking down?

No point now, since you guys used your power. She looked around in worry. Her gaze settled on the Fallen with the dark, empty eyes. Plus, we need to get back fast.

Where is the nearest lay line? Vik asked.

Where we first met. I’ll meet you both back at the house. She glanced at us one last time, and then her eyes settled on me before she disapparated.

    Ready?

    Yeah, I sighed.

Good, I’m so ready to head back home. You get a freaking sword, and I almost get eaten by a giant cat, he muttered, then disapparated.

    I chuckled, then followed Vik.

    Chapter 4: Parting

    Alec

N ow that you both passed that first test, and I know you both can fight, are you sure you still want to go through the sparing technique? Cora asked in between bites of tsampa.

Hell, yeah! I finally got some sleep last night, Vik said, putting his empty bowl down.

Yeah, you were too tired to worry about the animals. I chuckled.

He warily glanced at the two dogs, who hungrily eyed his empty bowl while the giant cat lounged next to Cora.

Are you done with that? He grabbed my half-eaten bowl.

    No.

You are now. He took it far from where we sat and laid it on the ground.

What the hell? I was still eating that.

He shrugged as he watched the two dogs lap up the bowl.

Cora smiled and got up. Here, Dawa, you can have a bowl. She patted the dog’s head and laid her bowl down, then turned to us. Are you two ready, then? It’s probably best to have a light breakfast if you insist on sparring.

She led us to a clearing and started with little preamble. So we’ll start with a few moves. Like I said yesterday, we need not start from the beginning, so a combination and strikes are what we will focus on. Also, as I mentioned, there’s no specific technique, so go with what is natural and what’s easy for you.

Are we not going to talk about the Fallen yesterday? Vik crossed his arms, and with a raised brow, he said, You practically hid from us last night, so why don’t you tell us what’s going on?

Her eyes darted towards me before settling on Vik. She looked to the ground and was quiet for a moment. Then, with her shoulders slumped, she said, I wasn’t entirely truthful yesterday. She turned and crossed her arms. I’ve encountered those two in the past. I’ve been evading them for a couple of years now. I suppose I should thank you for saving me from them. She looked at me from under her lashes.

Why didn’t you just say so?

I don’t know. I… don’t know the reason they wanted me. I don’t know if there are others. The way you took them down and the show of powers yesterday terrified me. I knew you were special… She stepped forward as her eyes intensely anchored mine. She reached a shaking hand and touched my arm. … I’m sorry I doubted you. I’ve seen no one like you before, she whispered.

My stomach sunk as I registered the adoration on her face. I forced a smile and said, It’s okay. I patted her shoulders and turned to Vik.

He raised his eyebrows and flashed me an enormous smile.

    The fucker was no help.

Should we continue, or do you think you’re still in danger? I gently stepped away, trying not to be rude but also not trying to encourage her.

I glared at Vik behind Cora. I’m gonna fucking set Jampa on him later.

No, it was just the two.

Will you tell us how you evaded them for so long? Vik asked.

Yeah, I supposed it wouldn’t hurt, especially if we were to train together. The reason I successfully disappeared the first time is that one of my talents is that I’m able to communicate with animals.

What? That’s impressive. My eyes widened.

Thank you, she said, her cheeks flushing.

You mean you talk to them? Vik’s brows scrunched. That’s a rare talent.

Not with words, no. More like a feeling or intent. I can tap into their aura and… I guess the best description is that I meld it with mine so we can understand each other. The animals warn me when danger is close by.

Can you do that with humans? I asked.

No, I tried. She shook her head.

You said one of your talents? Vik’s eyebrows rose.

Her cheek turned up. You caught that, huh? Yes, the other will help us with our sparring. Face each other. She gestured with her hands for us to get closer. Tescao is beneficial in combat. It keeps you in control of your body and mind so you can deliver the killing blow to the strike points in the vulnerable zones as fast as possible. There are no strict forms or rules. We will cover some close combat combinations and, from there, adapt the concept to other techniques. Questions?

We both shook our heads. Okay, show me how you two fight.

Vik and I eyed each other and backed up a few paces. This would hurt since we didn’t have our gear on, and we were on hard ground.

Vik wore a cocky grin on his face.

Oh, this fucker is going down.

With narrowed eyes, I waited for Vik to make his move since he was an aggressive fighter.

I kept my legs spread apart, ready to move. He sprang forward with his right fist raised as he swung it to my face. I blocked it with my forearm and jabbed at his undefended torso. He grunted and quickly grabbed my neck with his other arm. I twisted away before he could pin me down. We circled each other, and he came at me again with his right hook.

Okay, I’ve seen enough. I need to stop you, or we’ll be here all day. You two are doing typical street fighting. She raised her hands and flashed us an enormous smile. "I didn’t mean any disrespect. You are both very skilled, but if you want to employ the art of Tescao, your technique will tire you out. With Tescao, the goal is to take your opponent down quickly. With every move you make, you need to either defend or target the vulnerable zones. So if you’re not attacking, you’re blocking, and then block again soon after targeting.

So, When Vik comes at you with his right hook, instead of blocking, you need to grab and yank that arm close and go for his neck. Vik, try to hit me.

Vik raised his arm and swung. She grabbed it and pulled it towards her body as she jabbed her arm towards Vik’s neck. So, to answer your other question, my other talent is I’m fairly comfortable with thermal energy, but instead of producing fireballs, I combine my Tescao training and power my blows with heat. When I strike an opponent, they are down instantly. That means I’m best at close combat.

Holy shit, you mean to say that I didn’t need to defend you yesterday?

She smirked. No, but I appreciate it nonetheless. Thank you.

Vik still looked annoyed but mumbled, You’re welcome.

Okay, so practice and find your technique. You can even use those Kali sticks.

We practiced the hand moves all morning until Vik and I progressed to grappling. Cora left us and checked in on us from time to time, and offered suggestions. After lunch, we advanced to using Kali sticks, which required many dodging and counter strikes.

By the end of the day, kept practicing even if we were both exhausted and our bodies were drenched in sweat. My muscles felt like lead, which slowed my movements. Fucker never conceded, and neither did I, so we'd be here for a while.

Vik raised his right arm and jabbed it over my head, which I dodged while simultaneously blocking his left hand where his other stick was ready to strike. I then stepped to the side and hit the side of his neck, which made him lean forward. With my other hand, I hit the back of his head with my other stick. He fell forward with a thud. He stayed down for a moment, which allowed me to catch my breath.

Are you ready to tap out? I asked.

He tapped his right hand. Thank fuck.

I collapsed on the ground, trying to catch my breath.

I call dibs on the bathroom. I turned to Vik, who hadn’t moved from his spot.

All yours, asshole. I’m going to sleep here tonight. Bring me food when you’re done.

With a chuckle, I dragged my ass up.

There was smoke coming from the outdoor fire, so she had dinner started. I hope Cora had made extra since I could eat a whole Yak.

Tashi and Dawa greeted me as soon as I opened the door. Hey, guys, why are you two in here? I scratched them behind their ears. Sorry, too tired to play. Need to shower. I went to the kitchen, drank two full glasses of water, then grabbed a change of clothes and stepped into the bathroom. I froze, my eyes grew, and words got stuck in my mouth as Cora stood before me, naked, her straight black hair brushing the tips of her supple breasts. Water beaded along her porcelain skin.

I’m so sorry. I… I thought you were outside. I stepped back to close the door.

She stepped forward. My traitorous eyes traveled down her pink nipples, to her flat abdomen, down the curly hair between her thighs. I swallowed the lump caught in my throat as my eyes lingered on her rapidly rising and falling chest.

My heart thumped hard as temptation clouded my brain. She stepped even closer. All I had to do was lean forward, and our lips would touch.

I want you, Alec. I haven’t felt the touch of a man in so long. Since Eli, I have desired no one. I was ready to spend eternity alone, but since I’ve met you, you have stirred something in me. I see that you’re struggling. Let me make it simple. You can shut the door and join me. If not, I’ll be thinking of you. She bit her lower lip and slowly dragged her fingers down her flat abdomen.

She leaned on the counter and dragged her other hand down her chest slowly as she held my eyes trapped with hers. My breath caught in my throat, unable to move. My cock strained my pants as she pinched her nipples and bit her lip as her fingers crept between her thighs. When she let out a moan and dropped her head back, I disapparated until I made it to the peak of the mountain.

I sat heavily with my head bowed, dragged down with guilt. It felt like I had betrayed the Savior, which was ridiculous because I haven't met her.

But her constant presence inside of me felt like I knew her, so I shouldn’t have been tempted. I had waited for her my entire existence and I'd been out of my mind, desperate to find her. She was ingrained in me, and she’s all I thought of.

Perhaps Vik was right—I was losing it.

To comfort my unsettled thoughts, I felt for the Savior again and soaked in her energy. I embraced it and allowed it to permeate my being. I had been trying to control it for years, but I set it free until it melded with mine. The longer it stayed melded with my aura, the harder it was to disconnect. Perhaps I should have done this a long time ago, since I felt a sense of peace come over me, and the certainty that I could locate her gave me direction. The intense feeling of hopelessness and failure that I constantly carried on my shoulder disappeared.

My eyes snapped open as a wide grin split my face—I was ready to go home and find my mate. I just needed to make it right with Cora.

I disapparated towards Cora's cabin and was greeted by Vik's ire.

Where the hell have you been? Vik scowled and got up as soon as I walked in the door.

I zeroed in on Cora, but she avoided my gaze. My heart sunk. This would not be pleasant. Can we talk?

What is going on? Vik continued.

    I’ll tell you later.

No need to talk. Everything is fine. She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

I sat in front of her. Look, let me explain. Please. I waited for her to meet my eyes. I owed this to her for her hospitality. When she looked up, I asked, Do you know about the prophecy of the Savior and her Guardian?

    What…

I flashed Vik with an irritated look.

He narrowed his eyes and looked between the two of us and then sat heavily on the couch.

Yes. she intoned. Then her eyes grew. "You mean, your… your
